New Year Video Game Resolutions
« on: December 31, 2012, 05:47:50 PM »
On Halloween me and my family would carve Turnip lanterns and eat Dumpling and nuts, and on Christmas we would do the whole shameless commercialism thing. On New Year's Eve, however, we would each make a resolution to better outselves in some way. Often that would mean resolving to help out around the house or not to put as much sugar and fat into our bodies...which usually lasted a couple of days before the inevitable grind of life wore away at our resolve and moulded us back into the self-serving and gluttonous animals we are (wow, that got dark).

Today I was thinking about the resolutions that I would make when I was younger, and I recalled that when I was about 9 or 10 I resolved to stop playing video games in order to focus on my school work. Needless to say, my enthusiasm for the idea dwindled and I eventually decided to continue to play video games, to study more, and to sleep less. In the end it all worked out. I put myself through university, continued to play video games, and became an insomniac with a drinking problem...I kid, I kid.

Still, the idea of making a less grandiose video game related resolution does appeal to me. There are several habbits I've gained over the years which I would be best getting rid of. Why do I feel compelled to finish the Sticker Museum in the latest Paper Mario, for instance, even though I know it's a waste of time? Why, given that I've finished the game multiple times, do I constantly want to replay Metroid Prime even when I've got several unplayed games lying on my shelf? Why exactly is it that I refuse to use a guide even though my pain and frustration would be relieved by doing so?

So here it is. My New Year (video game) resolution.

*Dramatic intake of breath*

I, PixPixTM, resolve to stop bitching about the New Super Mario Bros series...(which sucks)...staaaaarting now!

What is your New Year's resolution?

As I said on our last episode of NFR, my resolution is to finally get through the damn Operation Rainfall Wii games (Xenoblade, The Last Story, & Pandora's Tower) and Disaster: Day of Crisis, preferably by March.  So far, I've only managed to finish Disaster due to the huge backlog of Blu Rays I've had to watch since Christmas.

Now, if Nintendo would patch the Wii U to allow me to multitask watching my Blu Rays while I play these games on the Gamepad, then I would probably start making some real progress.  As it is, though, I have trouble summoning the interest to continue playing those games, as good as they are.

Once the Rainfall games are done, I want to make a significant dent in my ridiculously-huge backlog before the end of the year.

Also mentioned on that prior NFR, I plan to buy enough 2013 games such that I'll actually have to put thought into my top 5 games.

*Stop buying games and start finishing up my backlog of games starting from the 90's :(.*

*Stop playing fooking TF2*  Freaking breaking some sort of record on that game alone.

*Get more streetpasses for 3ds*  Only had 6 so far :(.  I need to attend the comic con or something else this year.

My only game resolution is to get through my backlog before purchasing any new video games or accessories (the exclusion being Skylanders figurines, since my wife can't pass a games aisle without looking for new ones).

It's actually quite pathetic how many of my currently owned games haven't even been played, much less completed 100%.

When I say "get through", I don't necessarily mean complete all the games.  But I at least want to devote enough time to each of these games to get a solid determination as to whether or not I enjoy them.

Yeah, I need to complete my backlog. This unfortunately however was my resolution two years ago and I didn't even get close and then I ended up buying more games since then.

Well the first step in overcoming Lindy Syndrome is acknowledging the problem. Just take it one day at a time.

I'm actually going to add an additional resolution for myself. I'm going to start buying more Third Party 3DS retail games. I realised earlier today that I've bought plenty of third party eshop games but only one third party retail game (Street Fighter IV).

LOL lolmonade isn't an gamer, he's an collector :).   95% unfinished games = epic failure.  My PC's % of unfinished games is pretty high because I had an 10+ year gap where I didn't have an gaming PC (even though I continued to purchase the games anyhow) but I think I can beat Lolmande's 1 beaten to 90 games ratio :0.

That's where Backloggery.com comes in quite handy. It has helped me stay organised with my games, and also allows me to focus on progress on each one - especially when I might step away from one title to start a new/old game. I highly suggest everyone start a Backloggery account.

My resolution is to only spend $500 total for the year on games, and that's across 5 active platforms. This was my compromise to allow me to get the few games releasing this year that I will play immediately and often. Otherwise, like many others here, my focus is on reducing my backlog. Last year, I wrote out a weekly schedule on Excel of the games I would play for the year and it really helped me keep focus. I finished 57 games in 2012 (across PC, Wii,3DS, and WiiU) on a full time job/parent schedule! I am going to continue that this year.

I honestly think Steam sales have done this to me.  It wasn't that long ago that I wouldn't buy more than a game at a time, and then I would consume that game in its enirety before I move on to the next.  Then steam sales roll up and I think to myself "awesome, I bought 25 games for under $100!" without thinking to myself whether or not I have the time to play the game, or if it's something I'm even going to like, necessarily.

It's become a problem because I find myself spending more time chasing down sales than actually playing the games I already have.  And then I have so many games to choose from that I can't decide on which games I want to play.

1st world problems and all that.

Tell me about it, ending up with two more PC titles thanks to steam sales today.  Torchlight 2 and Awesomenauts.

Tried making an list on backloggery going take me a couple more days, but I did make an dent anyhow--I got most of the current stuff updated.

Here's my list--most depressing is all those RTS on the PC that I have stock piled and a few PC RPG's like Witcher series.  Really have to start knocking some of them down.

I don't mind backlog, it just means I can never complain about not having something to play.

I'm not going to limit myself to new stuff all together BUT.. I do want to try to finish my Gamecube back-log before I start buying new Wii games I missed out on, especially after NWR compiled a nice little list of under-rated/under-appreciated Wii games. Right now I have them sitting in my Amazon wishlist as a reminder, but I really should've done all this before Wii U came out..

If anything, my real resolution this year is to show my DS some love and not only finish that backlog, but get some more games for it as well. I recently picked up Mega Man XZ 1 and 2 and was enjoying ZX1 before the battery died; now I can't find the damn charger! I figure that playing  the best the DS has to offer is the best thing to do before upgrading to a 3DS -and keeping busy with games will make sure enough time passes that Nintendo might just release a redesign with dual-circle pads so that I won't have to bother with that adapter thingy.

Mine is in line with many others.  Stop buying games when I have such a huge backlog.  I think I have 90 games in my Steam account and I have yet to finish any of them and only downloaded 4 of them.  I think I may be close to having more games unopened than ones I have opened, at least for PS3.  I can't play Wii games without plugging it in first.

I think I'm doomed.  I can't help but buy games when they are cheap.  Humble Indie Bundles have become my curse.
