Geist will be just another mature game Gamecube owners won't buy for one reason or another.  Eternal Darkness should've been a million-seller.  It barely broke the 100,000 mark in North America.

Actually Eternal Darkness sold 200,000 Copies in North America but I agree that the game should have been AT LEAST a million seller.

I think replacing might have been a mistranslation.  No one is going to stand for Mario being replaced (if it's even possible).

Well, had Nintendo actually advertised it, I'm sure it would have sold a lot.  I can still remember the original Resident Evil commercials, but I can't remember any of the ED ones (despite me seeing the commercial at least once).

You know they should have have Silicon Knights and Retro think up some new characters to center a series after, and have the new studio they made in Tokyo make the games. Just a thought.

GIVE ME A DAMN RPG! I'm dieing here *cough, cough*, the only thing that is keeping me going is my GBA....*cough, cough*, I need some good qualitly 3d RPG's too (yes I have Skies, don't want to get Lost Kingdoms becuase of reviews).

I beg of Nintendo to please grant me this, A mature RPG brand sealed is what I wish, make it fun and epic-----chalk full of story, so when I play it, I can really feel the glory, slaying beasts left n right, is definitly a must have, but don't forget the comedic part, so I repeadtly just laugh, especially when I perfectedly puff and pass, (speed up the beat) uh make it mature, with the band playing that sweet overture, to greatly signify when I stab the bosses EYE, no need to sanitize, let me see the blood and tissue, so I realize, I violently I solved the issue, don't go crazily unrealistic, something like Cowboy bebop but somewhat sadistic,

Well there is alway Fire Emblem. I don't think they have made the prerequisted console version they do for every console they have. And if the GBA version does well they may bring others.

Can't agree with you more. Nintendo always makes great games with great mascots. Mario is the ICON there's no doubt about that, but to keep being innovative Nintendo forms new stories , new ideas that might not work on Mario, Zelda or others...well what do you do? Creat some new mascots of course. I mean can you see mario collect all this pocket monsters because he wants to be the best trainer in the world?? Dont think so right. While an rpg might work with mario ( super mario rpg anyone?) maybe other ideas can't or may not feel good putting them in the older mascots.

I totally agree that nintendo should keep there old mascots. Where would nintendo gamers be without Mario, Zelda, Donkey kong, Pikachu and even Fox Mcloud and Samus Aran (to an extent). It would drive the whole world into a state of utter choas and mayhem! Ppl would flood the streets running and screaming as vandals blow up the white house and other religious landmarks. (imagine it ..... just like in Independance Day !) Without the mascots that we love so much ... WE ARE DOOMED ! DOOMED I TELL YOU !!!!

Rick, I'm not saying I don't like Potter. Nor am I saying I like Potter.
It's jut stupid the way it has all these 'soap' elements in it, to appeal to the girls.

"And what about Ron! That thing with Hermione at the end of the Chamber of Secrets movie sooooo means they're gonna go out with each other!"

It's just sick.
Apart from that, Ron's cool. Funny bastard that one.

Natalie Portman is very cute but come on guys....if you aren't Termin8Anakin you shouldn't be using her as an avatar. This is starting to become quite disturbing LOL. I sure I'll post here tomorrow and everyone but me will have Natalie Portman avatars Anyway enough Harry Pothead talk, we were having a nice discussion about Iwata's more agressive stance than Yamauchi and the introduction of new mascots that could eventually replace the current ones.

After the nice Harry Potter brake let me put us back in the discussion that all of you have so nicely brought up to this point.

What we have here is two things, Iwata and all this talk about new 'mascots'. Iwata is a great guy, he's young and ambitious like Yamauchi was back in the 80's, let's not forget how daring it must have been for Nintendo to launch a consle back then after the 84' crash in the States, and it mustn't have been an easy job to take the whole industry into their own hands and make it grow. Let's face it, most 3rd parties out their own part of their success to Nintendo's ballsy aand bossy attitude. Iwata knows this, but now he's just trying to catch up. I don't think he's going to take the company into making more games with less quality, after all Nintendo didn't do that when they dominated and that was more than what Sony has been doing, so I don't think they'll do it now. What they will do is upgrade their marketing strategy, change their image. Their gonna try to put more guts into their style, remember "Now you're playing with power"? That phrase sold games on it's own.

This change can't do much I'm afraid on it's own. The leaders at Kyoto know this also, so whats the answer? Mascots, or rather...characters. see, Mario can't be changed, neither can Link (actually he did change in the Space World 200 demo but we all saw it as a OOT upgrade). These characters can't change either because the 'kiddie' thing has been stuck on them or because stupid PC gamers who have been playing the same variation of C&C for the past 6 years(?) say "Come on, Zelda, again? Same ol' same ol'". Nintendo has seen this and it pisses them off that they are the ones that have been innovative the most compared to any other company and at the same time they are getting the least out of it because of stupid reasons (the 'kiddie' thing is bad but dumb guys who are playing the same games with different graphics for years while accusing these new and innovative games of being the same thing is worse). So, Nintendo has to win these players with new stuff. Innovative? Maybe, but the goal is to win them over by selling them things that appeal to them more that the excisting arsenal and ensuring their (the gamers') 'image' by changing their own to a cooler one.

This more will be good for us too. Not about the image and stuff cause if we were afraid of being call pussies because we got the wimpy purple cube and not the slick black...cube, we wouldn't be here. But thing of the options. We were all upset when we found out that Zelda would go the cel-shaded way and not the SW 2000 way, well not maybe we'll get some new character, that will do Link's job in such a setting. It might all end up being just copies of the things we are familiar with now, but it will get those idiots to get a Nintendo console and we can get a more 'mature' Nintendo gaming fix. Also this give Nintendo the chance to let younger designers of theirs step up and make their own myths, wasn't it announced that Nintendo opened a studio in Tokyo recently? All this will bring newer characters, newer characters will bring 3rd parties and they will, in turn, bring some of their games to us. Hooray!

There's one thing that saddens me though. The GC has been such a great console for me. It has brought old NES and Snes day back, that;s how good it games are to me. It really is a pitty Nintendo hadn't prepared these changes for the GC era. But I guess that would show just what kind of followers people are. Just imaging, in a different reality, the idiots that diss the GC, walking around with it in their hands just because of a different image...

Anyone know who Grug is?
He was my fave book character when I was a young'un.
And he's my first non-Natalie avatar!

So if Nintendo are looking for a new Mascot that's cute, cuddly, and has that hint of nostalgia, it should the one and only Grug!

Argh, I knew that a comment about this 'article' would come up sooner or later.  This so-called "news" is actually from N-Philes and the author of the article has not given you the full story.  Instead, he's paraphrased and inaccurately quoted another article to make it seem like people have said things that they didn't.  The actual article can be found here:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/bw/20030528/bs_bw/b3835158mz033

To sum it up, the article comments that Nintendo isn't doing as well as they have been, and that they're introducing new franchises and titles - their latest being Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.  It then goes on to say that Microsoft and Sony are eating away at Nintendo's market share and sales.  You've then got an analyst saying that Nintendo needs to give the market more of what it wants (ie so-called mature titles with realistic shooting et al).  This is followed by information on Nintendo's connectivity titles such as Tetra's Trackers and that Nintendo will be giving away Game Boy Players with their consoles.  The article also states that while the Game Boy Advance is strong at the moment, Sony has announced plans for a handheld rival, the PSP, and that the announcement has affected Nintendo's share price.  Finally, there's the Microsoft comment, which is actually being made in response to an Iwata quote saying that online gaming isn't profitable as the average gamer doesn't want to pay more money to play a game they've already paid for.  (Fair enough.)

Yet, it's all been taken out of context and made to seem that Iwata is reacting to Microsoft's "jibe" that they're a toy company by shafting Mario and Pokemon, and replacing them with new characters.  This is not the case.  It's mostly just a summary of what we already know - E3 news, Nintendo not performing as well as expected, the PSP, and Nintendo is making a successor to the GameCube and the Game Boy Advance.  In other words, nothing very sensational at all.

As for the comment about Mario and Pokemon being replaced, I sincerely doubt it.  Mario and Pokemon especially are Nintendo's biggest money makers.  They'd be mad to completely drop them.  Although the article does say "Nintendo's army of creators is hard at work on next-generation stars to replace the company's aging lineup of Mario and Pokemon", it is written by the article author -- not a direct quote.  I believe that if anything, Nintendo would create new mascots to appeal to the older generation of gamers to COMPLIMENT Mario and Pokemon -- not replace them.  All this fuss over one word.

Don't believe everything you read.  All this typing has given me a headache.  I'm off to...do something.
It's got a duck bill, you moron!

yeah, that sounds about right.
i think i should stop fueling all this talk about Natalie Portman, Grug, and Harry Potter.

Lets get back on topic shall we?
The weirdest thing Nintendoi can do is just pump out a new game with a new character, with all this hype claiming that he (or she) is the coolest thing to come out of Nintendo since Shigeru.
I doubt they would do that.
They'd most likeley place the guy/girl in a well known game to introduce him/her to gamers. So if he/she is a success: "Wow! That guy is cool!", they can then start making games, books, movies, sex toys and whatnot to make them famous. If they're not a success: "What were Nintendo thinking when they created that thing?", then, well, at least they were in a game that was a success.
They did that with Yoshi, and look at him now.

I got this from N64 Gamer, by the way, I think. I just remember someone from somewhere said this.

If Nintendo want a new Mascot to bring in the doe, why not make a game character of someone who practically ensures the success of Nintendo?
I present......Shigeru, a skinny Japanese family man in a turtleneck who can run, jump, and create killer games. What would it be like to play as Shigeru? Only Nintendo can show us.

Get ready everyone.
Cause Shigeru's comin' to a Gamecube 2 near you.

Nintendo can do this, look at the Metroid series, completley original and while not overly gory, no one could dismiss those games as being kiddy. Tetra seems like she might get a few new games, but I think a new big franchise would be a more serious adventure or RPG. Nintendo went with the new graphics for Zelda becuase they suited Zelda, but there was such a huge uproar over taking away the seriousness, I think Nintendo will make something vaugley similar to a dark (but not too dark) style Zelda.

We all know that nintendo along with some other companies (not RARE ... dirty traitors!) have the potential to come up with something magnificent that will have the next gen gamer gob smacked. They will probably create another Zelda+metroid+perfect dark game or mascot. Personally I would love to have a new character to drool over but not if it replaces the mario and link and donkey kong and pikachu etc etc etc that we all love and cherish. Without them I would be hart broken

I think we should stop using the word 'replacing', since we all agree that this won't be the case and it won't. Nintendo didn't replace Mario for Link, it didn't replace Link for Samus and it surely didn't replace any of them for Pikachu. It's very interesting to see how easily we can be mislead by these articles by bad translations ect. That's why I just listen only to officil announcments when they're ready.

Also I don't feel that Nintendo will need to bring a character thats known from another game of theirs. They've done this already and it didn't work, it would show that they would be trying to go the safe way around and such characters would probably bring the kiddie thing with them. It's simple, they got new talent there, these new guys are gonna make fresh characters and they will be taught on how to design good games and great gameplay by the older masters, then they'll take this knowlege and use it in their own more modern way. Don't worry.

What I would like to see though, is a dark action RPG set in a futuristic busted up world. If you've ever heard of Shadowrun then you know what I'm talking about.

Haha. I think we should go back about 40 years more.
I can't imagine Yamauchi with black hair.

*Goes back to 1951*
"Hello Mr. Yamauchi-san. Oh my god, you have black hair! I'm Termin8. I'm from the future. How have you felt about taking over Nintendo for a few years now?"
"Hwki lkaskj hybka iapo aelkf sdif aliwefas!!!!!!!!"

"Ok."
"Get out of my way, you filthy little maggot!!!!!!!"
"Oh, sorry."
"You're fired!"
"But I don't work for you!"
"I make sure you fired from your job!"
"As a time traveller?"
(grumble)"Hmph!"
"Uhh, did you know that you're gonna hire a man named Shigeru Miyamoto, and he's going to save Nintendo from gaming oblivion single-handedly?"
"I will never hire anyone by that name! Especially not anyone who's gonna make some person named Jampman in a game called Donkey Kong!"
"BUt it's not 1980 yet! How do you know about that?"
"I am God. And a person that looked just like you came here 10 minutes ago telling me that same thing."
"Looked like me? How? I'm the only one who looks like me, and I don't have a twin."
"No, I meant he looked like an idiot. Now get out of my way! I have a Love Hotel to visit...I mean, run."

Well there you have it, the official Yamaichi-san interview, circa 1951.
