Wii Mini Confirmed, Canadian Exclusive
« on: November 27, 2012, 07:09:21 AM »

The rumours were true, a mini Wii is on its way!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32619

A new revision of the Wii called the Wii Mini is coming to store shelves next month. An image of the console is now live on Best Buy's Canadian website.

The newly redesigned mini Wii looks vastly different to the original Wii design. It features a black surface with a stylish red border around the edges of the console, and it looks more square-shaped than the original.

The console comes with a red Wii Remote Plus, and while the actual stock listing seems to redirect to the main Wii page, our initial source also stated that it comes with a Nunchuk (presumably red or black) and a sensor bar.

Despite the lack of info, you can clearly see the release date on their page, there's even a pre-order link to get in on the action early. The new design will be on sale December 7, 2012. There is currently no pricing information available.

I saw a pic of the box. The console itself would look fine except for the bizarre red border. Maybe Nintendo will release a solid black/white version in the future. I can't afford one now anyway. I would like to get one eventually for Homebrew/as a backup Wii.

Edit: it's top loading

I think the design looks cool from the pic we have. I wish Nintendo tried something like this with the Wii U design.

The black part looks like it has a matte finish. Yeah, I also wish they tried something like that for the Wii U.

Why, Nintendo?  Why release a revision of your old hardware less than a month from the release of the new one?

Probably profit margin-related. Either way, can't say this is the best way for things to turn out. :/

This won't affect Wii U sales. People buying the Mini aren't choosing this over Wii U. This revision exists to boost sales of a console with a wealth of content during the busiest shopping season of the year. Some will double dip while others don't want a Wii U yet or ever. This is win-win for Nintendo.

According to Kotaku, it's Canada exclusive (what the what?), top loading, lacks GameCube support, and lacks Wi-Fi (what the what? Part 2). Move along, people. Nothing to see here.

The one justification I can really see for this model is that Nintendo can keep it alive well after Wii online services stop. Presumably they can keep manufacturing this for years to come and will have room to drop the price even further - think of PS2 hardware sales, and how that console was still selling.

Not sure it's an option I like or would recommend to anyone right now... but in a couple of years when Wii online services no longer exist and people just want a cheap way to revisit old games, this might be pretty cool.

As I mentioned in the other news posting on this, this is terrible and their is nothing redeeming about it. It's ugly (matte finishing is fugly, and the red/pink border is stupid), no online means no online play and no Virtual Console/WiiWare games, and you lose so much value compared to the normal Wii. And it's not smart to think it will be exclusive to Canada, it's gonna be announced for the US (I would guess by Thursday). At best, this will be a niche product that no one remembers in the future other than collectors (like the Game Boy Micro)

How is a person supposed to get Wii Sports? It's not sold retail here in North America.

edit: they should preload Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort.

Matte finish is practical, more so on things people actually out their grubby hands on than a meant-to-be-mostly-stationary piece of hardware.

No need to get all up in arms about it. Promptly ignore it and purge its existence from your memory.

Um, Wii Sports has been at retail since at least May 2011 (when it was released at part of the Nintendo Selects line).

Kudos to TJ for adding a smart ass "Um" to the beginning of his posts so everyone hates themselves for not knowing whatever he's correcting them about. My self esteem is at an all time low. I'll go hang myself now.
