Update: Now coming to North America too!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32618

Relive some retro level dreams in Coin Rush for free!

To celebrate the global tally total of over 300 billion coins, Nintendo has released a special Golden Classics Course Pack for New Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan.

The pack will feature rearranged levels from Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. (levels 1-1, 1-2 and 1-4) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (1-1 and 1-5), with new features and secrets to fit in with the Coin Rush theme.

Satoru Iwata revealed through a Chotto Nintendo Direct that the pack will be free to all players until January 31 of next year. After that, the pack will cost 200 yen to download.

There has currently been no announcement of the pack becoming available outside of Japan just yet, but as with the previous packs, an international release should follow soon.

UPDATE: Nintendo of America announced this morning that these levels would also be coming for free in North America.

Funny, this is the one level pack I'd probably pay for. Still, I hope the rest of us get it free as well. :-)

This is lovely, I spent tons of money on video games lately so I want this but really can't afford the pay so this seems perfect for me . Free DLC is great and nostalgic levels like this are epic win . I hope this is it for nsmb2 DLC this year so they can somehow sync DLC with nsmb u and have level packs work on both games . Some of these levels would be a blast 5 player on Wii u

To not have it for free to other regions, (even if was to be for one day only), is stupid and unfair to those outside of Japan. Now, that being said, I'm also hoping for it to be released here in the U.S. as well as other locations too.

Same here. While I think the pricing of the DLC level packs are pretty fair, the actual game had enough content for me and I already moved on to Paper Mario. The only thing I haven't done is get 1 million coins.

I'm not complaining about free levels. But really use the old super mario music. I can't stand that music

I don't hate the NSMB music; they're just not very memorable. The music really doesn't hold a candle to the music in pretty much every other Mario series in existence. The menu music in NSMB2 is the only one I remember and I'll probably forget it soon enough.

Yeah I don't hate the NSMB music either, it's just gotten really old.  I mean it used to be that every new Mario game had completely new music from the ground up.

I agree. It was not only nostalgic but great exploration and so many coins. Had a blast finding new areas and places that didn't lead to the same as before
