Rayman Legends Delayed to Early 2013
« on: October 08, 2012, 11:59:39 AM »

It's still technically in Wii U's launch window, but Rayman's Wii U debut is not coming out in 2012.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32041

Rayman Legends, a Wii U exclusive sequel to Rayman Origins, is getting a slight delay to Q1 2013.

Ubisoft confirmed the news to Videogamer, saying the game will "launch worldwide in the first quarter of 2013."

"We're happy that fans are excited about the game, and we are taking the time to make sure we deliver a game that lives up to and hopefully exceeds their expectations," A Ubisoft representative explained. "We'll have more details to share soon."

Previously, Rayman Legends was set to be a launch title in Europe and a launch window title in North America. It was expected for, at worst, a December launch in both territories. Now, it is set for a release between January and March 2013.

Ubisoft currently has eight games announced for Wii U including Rayman Legends. Six of them, including ZombiU and Assassin's Creed III, are set for launch day. The other game, Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth, is a launch window title.

They would have been launching alongside a Mario game. Probably wouldn't have sold a whole bunch anyway.

Yeah, there are problems with either scenario. Releasing at launch is always good, and would get you sales from the people buying early, but you're also going head to head with Mario. A Q1 release puts it more on its own, but loses some of those launch sales. And as brood points out, there's probably more competition overall in Q1 than there is in the holiday season, although if you just look at the Wii U that's not the case.

Yeah, that's about right. It makes sense for Ubisoft to not launch against from New Super Mario Bros. U even if they miss launch/the holiday season. I plan on buying Legends eventually, but I wasn't getting it at launch anyway. This just means I have to wait a bit longer for a price drop which will still be well before Nintendo even considers dropping NSMBU's price.

NSMBU's price will never drop. At least not until a decade from now when it's on the Virtual Console for the Wii U's successor.

I'm bummed, but it does provide something confirmed to look forward to in early 2013. I don't believe for a second Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 are hitting in the launch window...

It's a big window.  I think Wonderful 101 will still make it.

It' like the universe is screaming to me 'Don't get a Wii U at launch!'. The only launch games I was really interested in had been Pikmin 3 and Rayman Legends (possibly interested in Inferno but I haven't seen the game yet).

I am, therefore, dissappointed, but as others have said it definitely makes sense to not release a 2D platformer alongside a NSMB game.

I wasn't buying the game this year anyway since, although I love Rayman Origins, I still have a ton of it left to play.

I give it like 4-5 years. Twilight Princess took close to 5 years, around when Skyward Sword came out. I think Nintendo dropped Super Mario Galaxy 1 shortly after its sequel came out. If there's another NSMB on Wii U (which doesn't seem too implausible with the way Nintendo releases them), maybe we'll see a price drop sooner.

Nintendo only releases one NSMB per system meaning there won't be any sequel on the Wii U.  The NSMB series has some of the largest legs in gaming history, with the DS version selling 29 million and the Wii version 26 million.  Plus thanks to DLC level packs, it gives even less reason since they can make even more money off a game that will continue to sell over 20 million copies.

If the DS version is still $35 even though it's over 6 years old, I don't see any of this changing unless the series takes a huge downward spiral in sales which has yet to be seen.

I don't see Nintendo keeping up the pattern of only releasing one NSMB game per system. I'd be very surprised if we don't see another one on either the Wii U or the 3DS. There's just way too much money just sitting there for Nintendo to ignore it.

So far.

I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to release another one on Wii U especially since this is a launch title. They're easier to make and they make a lot of money. I'd buy that one too.

It doesn't matter to me if they drop the price ever. I'm buying NSMBU as soon as possible knowing that I can probably get Rayman Legends for like $20-$30 within a year or so, something that won't happen with Mario unless I score one of those killer Toys R Us sales or something.

If we another NSMB game on 3DS or Wii U, I think it will be in like 2016 aka far enough away that people will be like "what Mario fatigue? OMFG MARIO" or something like that.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying anytime soon, but NSMB2 was pretty early in the 3DS's life (though admittedly roughly about the same time as the original was in the DS's life) and U is a launch title. These consoles could both be around another 5-6 years, and I can't believe Nintendo would sit on the franchise that long.

These consoles could both be around another 5-6 years, and I can't believe Nintendo would sit on the franchise that long.

But they won't because of the huge legs these games have.  Seriously, look at the legs NSMB DS has had starting from the first time its yearly sales were shown.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2007/070427e.pdf

First year - 9.5 million
Second year - 4.66 million
Third year - 4.3 million
Fourth Year - 4.03 million
Fifth year - 4.39 million
Sixth year - 2.21 million

Since both games are coming early in their systems lifespans like DS did, if they have similar legs then there isn't going to be any sequel for at least 5-6 years which will be around when the 3DS and Wii U successors come out, which makes since for those new systems to get them.

Unless NSMB 2 and U have a huge drop in sales and stop selling by their second year, I see no reason for Nintendo to release any sequels for the existing systems.  That would be like Mario Kart and Smash Bros getting a sequel on its existing system which has never happened in the past since they still have long legs like NSMB as well.

Even if they were to wait until 3016 I still wouldn't want another NSMB game if it's anything like the previous 3, lol. Not that they were bad games, but for me they were pretty tame and boring.

'Tis a real shame. I don't think any title surprised me more with it's unexpected quality last year than Rayman Origins did, so I was very much looking forward to Rayman Legends. Oh well... at least New Super Mario Bros. U ought to tide me over until then in the 2D platformer realm.

It was never a launch game though, Ubisoft always said "Christmas 2012" when mentioning a release date.

Then they must have changed their mind between E3 and the event in New York (or the reps their were mistaken) since before the event it was not a launch game, and it ended up not being a launch game. So I would assume that the reps there were mistaken.

As someone who was the event, they didn't. :P:

Rayman Legends folks were adamant at "launch window." ZombiU folks were saying Rayman is launch, which we speculated as either RL folks not wanting to reveal it, or the ZombiU folks not knowing what's going on. Turned out to be the latter.

But it was slated as a launch game for Europe on Sept. 13. Now it's not.
