Honestly, the number 1 and 2 spots flip-flop a lot, because there's things I love about both games, but Xenoblade is slowly but surely winning me over. Best story, gameplay, design, and music of this gen.

I would find this disappointing coming from a staff member of any game-related site, but doubly so at a site focused on Nintendo consoles and games.


Did you not play any other third party games on Wii?  Or did you dislike everything else released by third parties?  With such a wide variety of games released on Wii, and so many niche genres covered, it's curious to see that your list is only 4 games long.

It's mainly my huge backlog. I own a ton of third party Wii games, but I haven't put that much time into a lot of them. First party games usually float to the top of the backlog, so I've played more of them, even though I probably own more third party games than first party ones for the system. I haven't even found time to start Skyward Sword yet, so you can see why some of these more obscure titles haven't gotten as much time as I'd like.

Where do we stand on Monster Hunter Tri? It was published in Europe by Nintendo.

I'd assume it's a third-party game.  The game/IP is fully owned and developed by Capcom, and I believe Nintendo only handled published in the one region.  (Backing my assumption is the fact that Monster Hunter appeared in the staff top ten third party list.)

That was my assumption too, but just thought I'd get clarification because of the rules stated at the top.

Monster Hunter was on the third party list for the staff, so I'd think it would be in the same category for this one.

Interesting stuff. You're right though, the lists aren't all that different. The most noteworthy differences are probably the inclusion of Punch Out on the forum list (a choice I very much approve of) and the fact that Overkill is actually missing from the forum list (which I'm actually very surprised at).
 

Strangely, my first party list would be closer to the staff's and my third party list would be closer to the forum's.

I know this doesn't get counted, but I missed this thread the first time around and wanted to put mine out there.
Much of the Wii generation was a period of my life when I wasn't gaming much (I didn't even get a Wii until the end of 2008) so I struggled to come up with 3rd party games I both played and liked so I had to just do a top 5 for that category.  Obviously, as a Nintendo fan since basically birth I played almost every first party game put on the system.

Strangely, my first party list would be closer to the staff's and my third party list would be closer to the forum's.

HotD was like 13/14 in the forums list. Wii Sports Resort wasn't anywhere noticeable, and Punch-Out was like 12 on the staff Top 10.

I think I'm the biggest outlier of the bunch, none of my third-party games are on either list, and only 4 of my first-party games are on them. Is anyone else this widely different?
