The DS RPG Diet
« on: June 26, 2012, 01:07:07 AM »

I'm working on a project - the general public is going to workshop it for me.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/30858

I've played a seemingly innumerable list of DS RPGs (17), and in trying to consolidate my thoughts on the system I decided a quick inventory was in order. What follows is the list of every DS RPG I recall playing, what my thoughts were initially, and what they were at the conclusion of the title. For the sake of brevity (it's the soul of wit, you know) I'm limiting my "thoughts" to four words.

Note: these may not relate to the game's quality - they are just my quick thoughts.

I plan on using this list for a future feature. This blog post is more of a workshop for the idea. Just doing this list has already been enlightening. I advise you try it with your gaming history. It has created an interesting mix of memories that historically had no reason to blend together.

Well, that was FURbulous. I've pretty much blocked Solatorobo from my mind except for the fur puns.

I think it's a testament to the quantity/quality of RPGs on DS that I also played a bunch of them and had little overlap with you.

That Inazuma song neither rhymes nor makes sense, in any way shape or form.
Quite an impressive musical feat. (read: travesty)

All those RPGs, yet no Bowser's Inside Story, the best of them all. Boo-urns.

After looking that up on Youtube I... now want to...is there an anime of this I can watch?

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

If you ever decide to watch the anime watch the Ryuu-Rogue fansub, the dub is horrible.

I have technically only have "Played" one on the list Infinite Space on the DS. Initial thoughts "**** yeah, Spaceships". Post game "That's not a moon" or "Mine is longer, bigger".

I finished Front Mission on the SNES, but it was after I played and finished Front Mission 3 twice which did spoiled me a bit. Initial thoughts would be "Yay, more Front Mission". Post game "This isn't very Tactical". Had they ported FM3 to DS, I would have been so happy, but they cheapened out on everybody. Porting the excellent untranslated FM5 to the 3DS would be amazing. It's Squares love letter to Front Mission.

Off list games:

Dragon Quest Heros: Rocket slime: IT "Looks like fun". PG "Short, Shallow, want refund".
Izuna 2: IT "Why pay for Roguelikes?" PG "It was OK".
Custom Robo Arena: IT "Robot fight!" PG "Personal miniature Gundam".

Anything else isn't much of an RPG. I don't count the Castlevanias as one.
I'm Lacus. I'm fine as Lacus!

This list is distinctly lacking in the excellent Mario & Luigi 3: Bowser's Inside Story and the terrible Mario & Luigi 2: Partners in Time.  Considering they're first party DS RPGs, I'm surprised James missed them.

weird list, likely mostly not of your choosing/ i.e., you got stuck with the review for most, if not all, of the listed?

anyway, you seem to be asking for a "workshop" of the list, but I am not clear what you are asking us to do.

I picked most of it.

I'm actually just looking for people to reflect in in a way that is conducive to them. It'll help me when I get down to writing.

The Infinite Space comment only makes me sadder that it's not part of the current Retroactive poll.   ;)

Is this like the twitter of game reviews?

Well, here goes nothing, in no particular order.
(Title - Initial Thought - Post Game Reflection)

Golden Sun:Dark Dawn - More fun! - Less charm.
Dragon Quest IX - Traditional RPG - Frickin' addictive.
Etrian Odyssey III - Far too old school - Incredibly deep
Pokemon Black - Nostalgia time! - Bored after 20 hours
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Better than Superstar Saga? - Nope!
Radiant Historia - Interesting mechanics - Awesome battle system
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 - Fun sequel - 24 hours straight...
Chrono Trigger DS - About time - Not revolutionary as promised

Looking over these, I still have to finish most of them. I get distracted a little too easily... now, back to Xenoblade...

Just realised that the only RPG I played on the DS was Pokemon Soul Silver so here goes:

Initial thoughts: Grinding while I walk!

Closing thoughts: What was I doing?

I made the fatal RPG error, I left it for 6 months and when I tried to pick up where I left off I had no idea what to do.
Something about training monsters to fight I think...

What did you think of the game "Contact" from 2006?
