if you flipped the sticks it would be a gamecube controller with a nicer design and super nintendo buttons

And a better right analog stick and what looks like a larger D-Pad. If it had analog triggers it seems like it would be the perfect controller.

The 360 controller is pretty much a copy of the Gamecube controller and when you get down to it all the non motion controllers out there for the consoles are extensions of the SNES controller. If you are not getting it watch this video. Start it at the 5 min mark.

I think we should leave the arguments of who copied who to one side. What does it really matter? If having a homogeneous control layout is what it takes for third-party studios to get their multi-platform games on the Wii U, then so be it. Hopefully, there will be some thoughtful uses for the GamePad from developers outside of Nintendo, but we'll see.

My only question concerning the Pro Controller at this point is: will it come with the system, or will it be sold separately?

He has a point, though. A lot of the things that make up the 360 controller were invented by Nintendo in the first place (d-pad, shoulder buttons, analog sticks, etc). What Nintendo took was the basic shape of the controller, which I think is more than fair considering everything else was theirs anyway. So Nintendo took one thing, but meanwhile Microsoft and Sony have controllers with 90% ripped off from Nintendo.

Yes, I know.  I just found it hilarious how fond some people on this site are of saying "Nintendo is the IDEAS company.  Everyone rips them off, especially Sony with the Dualshock controller", yet Nintendo's big new controller is a total reskin of the Xbox 360 controller (right down to using what looks like the exact same triggers).  In essence, Nintendo's big answer to creating a controller for games other than their own was to rip off another company's design.

Now, that's fine by me (I generally like the Xbox 360 controller, and the Wii Remote certainly demonstrates how badly Nintendo can design a controller when they want to be "different"), but I find it hilariously ironic that it's apparently sacrilege for other companies to modify Nintendo designs.  However, when you point out that Nintendo's doing the same thing, you get...well...arnoldrobinsonjr.

Right now I'm just happy it's not a dual shock. I absolutely cannot use analog sticks in that setup.

Nintendo's doing the same thing

They didn't start it, though... and there is a saying that turn about is fair play.

I agree. My beef with the dualshock is the tiny little nubs that they call "grips" that leave you nothing to grip onto.

BTW, have we forgotten that the CCP was a rip off of the dual shock? Had Nintendo not come up with this new controller design and instead stuck with their CCP from last gen, they would still be going with a rip off.

I have a sinking feeling that this video and new controller hint at only one WiiU gamepad being usuable at a time.  That could be a deal breaker for many people, me included.
Nah, I'm confident there will be 2x Wii U GamePad games shown at the software showcase, just not 1st party games. (at the moment)

Will the Wii U Pro Controller have to plug into a Wii remote or will it have wireless on its own?
Looks like it's all wireless baby!

Another question would be, does it have rumble or mic support?
Would be nice if it had everything the Wii U GamePad has minus the screen and sensor bar.

Hahaha! Ha?

If it doesn't have a mic, I guess you're supposed to have your Wii U GamePad nearby to talk into..

Today is the first day that I considered that I might actually buy a Wii U. I pretty much *only* care about a "traditional" gaming experience. While the 360 controller isn't super fantastic, it's the least bad of this generation. (What can I say? I'm a controller snob)
This actually looks better than the 360 controller to me, because of
- a nice big dpad that will probably be precise and light to the touch
- buttons that might not be mushy analog bullshit

Now, if the rest of the system features cater to me more than some grandma, I might actually be sold.

Wii U Controller Details
Does the Wii U Pro Controller have rumble? Are the ZL & ZR triggers analog/pressure sensitive, and do they click when they are pressed all the way down like on the GCN controllers? Are these features on both the Wii U Pro Controller and the Wii U GamePad?

Since Nintendo didn't mention analog triggers while talking specifically about updating their Wii U Gamepad, I'm starting to think that won't happen.

This actually seems less necessary since the Wii U Gamepad is a lot more traditional than the Wii Remote was.  Is there anything on here that is missing from the Gamepad?

I'm iffy about how the analog sticks are both in the primary position and I have that concern about the standard pad as well.  I really think our thumbs should naturally rest on the face buttons as we use those more than anything.  I've also noticed in my years of controller experience that analog sticks are easier to handle in the secondary position than the d-pad is.  The d-pad SUCKS if you have to reach for it and I imagine face buttons wouldn't be so hot either.  Having the analog sticks in the secondary position is the lesser of two evils as they aren't nearly as hard to use in that position.

But surely Nintendo paid attention to this stuff and wouldn't throw this crap on willy nilly?  Well, um, they didn't care about egonomics or even basic functionality last gen and the 3DS having only one analog pad seems to have been a clear mistake.  Any company that puts waggle in their games is no longer trustworthy when it comes to controllers.  I have to see if the analog stick positioning works out.  Knowing Nintendo they spent all their user testing on the damn screen because you know that THAT is what they really care about.

I disagree. It's better to have the dpad in the secondary position. And it's not a weird stretch on the 360 controller or anything and I don't even have giant gorilla hands. I feel like if anything is going to have problems in the secondary position, it's the stick, because being slightly uncomfortable with the angle will make it awkward to play, unlike with the dpad.

Ask me about my decades of controller experience :smug:

I have no idea why this exists when the Game Pad and Classic Controller already have everything it does. I also don't like how it's a copy of the Xbox 360 controller, there's nothing wrong with the form factor of the Classic Controller Pro.

But this is the only thing that has disappointed me about the Wii U so far.

The original Classic does, though the Pro does not. But I was under the impression that the Wii U controllers didn't either.

I just tested and neither of the classic controllers have click sticks
They better flip the button layout if this is to replace the classic controller as only 2 confirmed vc consoles(the n64 and incoming gamecube) use analog sticks.

Its also for original WiiU games. Its not a mere Classic Controller replacement.
