On the topic of gameplay, I think instead of a classic style, they should try to make a next gen 2D game.  I really haven't seen any developer try to push hardware when working on a sidescroller and I think that CastleVania would be a perfect fit.

I highly recommend you give WayForward's Bloodrayne Betrayal a try on XBL/PSN.  It's seriously a very good game, and I think it is trying to do pretty much that.  Really, what's more electronic gothic than a final boss that's a giant devil that warps around the room while doing the sign of the Devil with his hands and head bobbing to electric guitar riffs?

Yes, really.  He's totally doing the Wyld Stallyons thing.   ;D
I don't think the Metal was Heavy enough.

1. If I had to bet, I'd wager the new 3DS game will follow from the reboot's plot.  So, take solace in that.  Although, do you have a 3DS?

2. CV started as a generic "dude vs vampire" plot, but in my opinion, it evolved into its own identity.  Especially during the PS1/2 and GBA/DS games.  Those are the ones I like the most and that's what I would like to see continue.  But again, this is just a personal taste thing so, no need to agree with me.

3. When exactly was the franchise "driven into the ground"?  All the flagship games have been met with at least moderate commercial and critical success.

On the topic of gameplay, I think instead of a classic style, they should try to make a [fresh] 2D game.  I really haven't seen any developer try to push hardware when working on a sidescroller and I think that CastleVania would be a perfect fit.  They could combine aspects from the 2D and 3D games. as long as the art style remains I'd be all for it.

Agreeeeeeeeee!

As for, the topic of over releasing...I really don't see that as a problem.  The games differ in settings and are all different.  Gameplay changes are minimal but the area's you explore feel fresh and the main game is usually pretty long.   We haven't seen a portable Castlevania game in about four years, I'm all for Konami making three games during the 3DS's life.  As long as there different.

Agreeeeeeeee!

@Broodwars.

Just did some research, the reviews seem pretty mixed.  IGN gave it a 9.0 and GameSpot gave it a 5.5.
If it was on WiiWare I'd eat it up.  I don't have a PS3, I might try the XBOX version since it's only 15 dollars.
I does look a lot like Castlevania.

1.  No, I don't have a 3DS and at this moment it's looking unlikely that I ever will.  But it really depends on the games it gets.  After all, I pretty much bought a PSP just for KH: Birth By Sleep; Valkyria Chronicles 2; and Resistance Retribution.  And yeah, considering these  two games (Lords of Shadow 2 and Mirror of Fate) are rumored to have some kind of cross-platform thing, it's likely the two share the same timeline.

3.  For me, I thought the franchise first showed signs of growing stale around Dawn of Sorrow (since it was just regurgitating pretty much what Aria of Sorrow did), but for me it all came to a head with Order of Ecclesia.  I really can't convey in words how much I dislike that game, especially given how much of a complete non-character Shanoa is (and how what happens to her is IMO indicative of how misogynistic Japanese society can be).  In fact, years ago when it had just released I was originally planning to write a fairly negative review of it as my application to become a NWR writer, but I couldn't edit my thoughts down to something manageable so I decided against it.

Besides, to put it simply, the franchise would not have gone on its multi-year hiatus after 7 or so years of nearly uninterrupted (and mostly identical, with minor variations) Castlevania releases if Konami hadn't felt they had hit a creative and commercial dead-end.

I have a hard time believing you will never own a 3DS considering you own a Vita and how you burn through games.

As I said, it depends on the library of games the 3DS gets.  So far, aside from RE Revelations (which will probably come to Vita at some point, because it's Capcom) there really hasn't been anything on 3DS I want.  Plus, the 3DS has little value to me when the 3D screen gives me headaches and I'm not fond of the circle pad.  An exclusive Castlevania would be a step in the right direction, but Nintendo would first have to release the inevitable double circle-pad revision that has to be coming sometime in the next few years.
