Sega Giving a Boost to Wii Virtual Console
« on: May 03, 2012, 10:31:12 PM »

Next week, Sega is bringing two releases in the Wonder Boy/Monster World series to Virtual Console.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30043

Sega revealed today that Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World IV will be arriving on Wii Virtual Console on May 10 in North America and Europe. Earlier today, Sega also debuted the arcade classic Super Hang-On on the download service.

The upcoming release of Wonder Boy in Monster Land will be the arcade version. In the game, players must fight their way through twelve side-scrolling stages and save Wonder Land by defeating the evil MEKA dragon. The Sega Master System edition of the title was released on Virtual Console in 2009.

Monster World IV is the 1994 Sega Genesis sequel to Wonder Boy V: Monster World III. In this adventure platformer, you play as the young girl Asha who embarks on a quest to help a group of spirits with her magical pet Pepe and a genie. The upcoming release will be the first time this highly regarded entry in the series will be available for purchase outside Japan (it was playable for short while on GameTap).

The screenshots of both of next week's releases show artwork filled borders surrounding the game's play area so that the entirety of a widescreen television's frame will be filled. Assuming it isn't a mistake where other console versions are shown, these will be the first games on Wii Virtual Console with decorative borders.

I'm sure adding borders to Wii VC games won't matter late in the Wii's lifespan, but it's very good news for indicating what Wii U VC will offer. ;D

Well, it's cool to see more Virtual Console titles, although Sega has nothing that really interests me.  Nintendo is free to have my money if they'd like to convince Square-Enix and Taito to bring the rest of their missing VC titles over.

Yea, that's nifty.  I hope you're right about Wii U!

Those are some good companies.  Which games are you hoping for?

Can't speak for brood, but maybe the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games would be a good start.

The three big ones I'm hoping to see are:

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (Taito)
Illusion of Gaia (Square-Enix)
Terranigma (Square-Enix)

Naturally, I want to see Earthbound as well, but Nintendo's made it pretty clear that we will probably never see that game again.  I'm probably forgetting a few Square-Enix SNES RPGs, too.  But man I'd love to play those three games again in a legal manner with a real controller on the VC.

Kytim, Phantasy Star was released on the VC in 2009. Rudra no Hihō ("Treasure of the Rudras") is not gonna come out in North America on it because it was a Japanese-exclusive RPG. Nintendo has let import games on it, but not games which require you to be able to read the text to play.

That needs to change. Phantasy Star was never released on the North America VC, so they could port over the European one.

I've heard of all of those but haven't played a single one (I was a Genesis kid during that era!).

Wrong. It was released in North America on August 31, 2009. You could have checked by going on Wikipedia, by turning on your Wii and going to the Wii Shop Channel, or going to Nintendo's website (http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/liCGd--387PDpgcfX7CfYK4-c94D4wf6)

This whole time I meant "Star Ocean" for the SNES.

Cool! For what seems like years now I've been eagerly awaiting Monster World IV on the VC, ever since it was first rumored to be coming.

I want Castlevania:Bloodlines bad. Also with you guys on Lufia 2(First one isn't on there either, is it?), Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia. Gaia's absence is weird to me, considering the big push it got when it was originally released.
Anyone wanting Phantasy Star... if you have a 360 or PS3, get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. It has PS 1-4, both Shining Forces, and about 327462376 other games for a $20 price tag. My only issue with it is, as a 360 owner, the controller is atrocious for old school action titles. The fight pad isn't much better. Wii Classic controller all the way for that sort of thing. ;)
