Hackers Open Up Complete PS3 Library For Vita Owners To Play

Quote
When the PlayStation Vita hits store shelves in the West next month, gamers may have an even bigger selection of games to play than Sony intended. Today, videos have surfaced online showing a way in which PS Vita owners can use their PlayStation 3's Remote Play functionality to stream ostensibly any game onto their portable device.

Looks like hackers have remedied yet another one of Sony's shenanigans, just like when Sony removed Other OS support which was an advertised feature of the console. Hackers came to the rescue and restored the ability to install Linux on the PS3, and now they have saved the day once again it seems by allowing that play anywhere feature to work as advertised.

Also, here is a good rant video about this topic in case you are too lazy to read text:

Keep in mind this guy likes to swear, so this video is definitely not kid or work safe, but it is funny.

So is this a good thing or a bad thing for Sony?

Is remote play really a feature that people outside the hacking community give a damn about, though?  There's probably good reason that this feature never took off with the PSP.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

Well, I would love it if remote play let me enjoy all my PS3 games whilst the TV was otherwise engaged. I would even buy a Tablet S if that was the only way to do it. But I think you have to take this story with a big fat scoop of salt.

Firstly, did Sony ever advertise that the Vita would do this?
Because from what I can see one guy played Killzone 3 with a Vita once at a trade show.... a long way from marketing remote play as a feature.

Also, I'm pretty sure I remember reading a denial from Sony when the "all PS3 games will work with remote play in PSP resolution" rumour broke last year. Infact as I remember it, their official line was that only specific PS3 titles would do it.

AND FINALLY - from the videos I've seen the remote play hack is too laggy to be any fun.

Maybe when the WiiU launches Sony will show a sudden renewed interest in remote play. I hope so because it's something I really want to see. Whether the Vita's ropey analog sticks are up to it is a potential deal breaker though.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I see several commercials a day for the Vita where they are specifically advertising remote play.  It is a feature they are touting as a reason to get it.

To be fair, however, they're not advertising it as a feature that works with all games.

I imagine it's not enabled on all games for two reasons.  First, licensing.  Can't say for certain, but I figure this plays into it somehow.  Second, the Vita is still new - and attach ratio is very important for getting developers to make games for the system (see: Wii).  If Vita owners don't pick up any games (because, why bother, if my entire PS3 library is open for play and the Vita lineup is a bit lackluster right now), it would hurt the platform when developers determine if they want to make Vita games.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Very old news.   January 23, 2012 and it's already in the Vita thread.

It would be a huge feature for me just because I don't want to monopolize the TV.
