Paper Mario for GameCube?
« on: May 15, 2003, 10:19:35 PM »
Hi!  This is my first post...

Anyway, I saw something that should be brought up.  I visited the Mushroom Kingdom (http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk/), and they report that at Nintendo of Europe's website they have listed Paper Mario for GameCube for a Q1/Q2 2004 release.  It is totally seperate from Mario and Luigi RPG, so that makes me wonder if thats just a typo or something like a coincided release of a GBA and NGC game...

You can check it out at (http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/news/article.jsp?ElementId=49357a53-ee66-4501-a419-b6ab62213d89).

If its possible someone should tell the guys at E3 to ask Nintendo if the game is real or not.  Because if it is, then perhaps the game is too far early in development to be in presentable format.

It was on this site too, under the euro release schedule. I pointed it out in Talkback a couple of days ago but nobody seemed to care.

Screw this Paper Mario BS.  I would much rather see a new Mario RPG in a style similar to that of Super Mario RPG for the SNES and with Square developing of course.  Paper Mario was a good game but it was a little too cheerie and happy for my tastes and had a very lame "Bowser kidnaps the Princess" storyline.  Super Mario RPG was just WAY better and frankly I'd like to see the series go back in that direction.  Paper Mario is one of those titles that was great as a one shot deal but, like Wind Waker, I don't want it to become the new style for the series.  Of course as Mario and Luigi shows Nintendo's likely going to remain with that style.

Heh.  I have actually been playing Mario RPG these last few days.    That game is so sweet...

I still haven't finished Paper Mario yet, so I don't know if it's sweet or not, but I hear good things about it all the time.  (and some bad, but not from people I trust)
Once I had, a little game
I liked to crawl back into my brain
I think you know the game I mean

I personally think Mario RPG and Paper Mario are about equal.
Neither had that good a story. Paper Mario's story was very simple and predictable. Mario's RPG was definitly original and surprising but also incredibly lame at times.
Mario RPG had gameplay that was more advanced but kind of tedious and boring at times while Paper Mario's gameplay was too simplistic but more enjoyable.
Mario RPG was challenging but completely devoid of artistic style. Paper Mario had all kinds of artistic style but wasn't very challenging.
I really liked both games despite there flaws, but hopefully the next RPG game featuring Mario will combine the best qualities of both games.

mario rpg was a great game and very enjoyable, as was paper mario
the battle systems in both were pretty good and enjoyable
the problem with paper mario to me was that it was too easy and i mean too easy
mario rpg was not hard either but at least it had a little bit of challenge
personally i cant wait to see the mario and luigi rpg- it looks good
that is probably what was mistaken for paper mario 2 on gc
i call the big one bitey.

I also agree with Ian, screw paper stuff. I want to see the GameCubes power, and what a better way to show it with a Mario game...also throw Luigi in there too. A good idea would be Super Mario Brothers 5. Mario & Luigi co-op or single play, Yoshi will be there too.

"Super Mario RPG was just WAY better and frankly I'd like to see the series go back in that direction."

Yeah, me too!  I'd just love to see more repetitive dulled-down Final Fantasy clones on GCN.  No more of this new and innovative crap.

Well, okay, SMRPG wasn't THAT bad, but I find it to be a very overrated game.  It was fun in a way, and had a nice storyline, but the battle system was terrible and most of the gameplay was pretty boring.  It did have some pretty cool mini-games, though...

Still, I much preferred Paper Mario to SMRPG.  It had a great combination of adventure with Zelda-calibre dungeons and RPG elements with cool customization with the badge system.  I just wish you could have a full party instead of just Mario and a helper.

Paper Mario was an enjoyable game, which is what a video game should be.  It kept me playing until I beat it (given that it did not take too long) and I enjoyed playing it through a second time.  I would love to see something at least similar on GCN.

I thought Paper Mario was wayyyy better. Its just more fun, simple as that. Super Mario RPG i have only played for a few hours but it just doesnt have the charm that Paper Mario has. I hope Nintendo stick with the Paper Mario style, and i hope Intelligent Systems are making Mario & Luigi RPG, because Intelligent Systems > Square-Enix. IMO.

Both games were great, in their own special ways.  I liked Paper Mario's badge system while I liked the comic appeal of Super Mario RPG.  Either way, as long as the new game is just as appealing as the previous ones I'll be just fine.

come on, almost every mario game has had the princess being kidnapped by bowser at some point in it.
its what mario is all about, saving the princess.

Bowser = Bad guy who kidnaps princess
Princess = Damsel in Distress
Mario = Fat Italian plumber who becomes the princess's Knight in shining armour.

Paper Mario was great and an original idea, but I think a sequel would ruin the uniqueness. Rather, I'd want Super Mario RPG 3 (or 2 if you don't consider Paper Mario to be SMRPG2)...developed by Intelligent Systems or the team at Square that developed Super Mario RPG.
