New Bundle better than price drop
« on: May 15, 2003, 08:21:39 PM »
Its seems that Nintendo is gonna bundle the Gameboy Player with the Gamecube for $149.99. It doesn't say whether the regular cube is gonna get a price drop or not but I think this is an excellent idea. It give the Gamecube something the the X-box and PS2 cannot offer. Here is the link. Text Anybody wanna buy my used GC. I want to buy a new Platinum GC with GBPlayer included

Gamespot is also reporting this. It is looking a lot like there will be some type of price cut in the works for the standalone model.

Here is the Gamespot article.

lol, what a great idea! a friend of mine was going to buy a GC if the price dropped but I could offer him mine for sale and then buy a new platinum w/ GB player. they should throw in a silver wavebird or at least make one available for purchase in us...

how about a cube, GB player, wavebird, and a SD adaptor (w/ a SD card) for $200? ps2 is doing a similar deal w/ a ps2 and the network adaptor. hey, have the gc throw one of the network adaptors too or maybe make there be different 'pakages' kinda like choosing different options when buying a car.

The party gamer pack: $200-250
-cube
-network adaptor
-network cable
-extra controller(s?)
-demo disk
-LAN specific demo disk

The GameBoy pack: $200
-cube
-GB/GC specific demo disk
-gb player
-gb/gc cable
-demo disk

creative pack: $250,
-cube
-GBA camera
-GC character program
-SD card and adaptor
-gb player
-gb/gc cable
-demo disk

mega pack:
-cube
-4 wavebirds
-new mem card 502
-gb player
-gb/gc cable
-network adaptor
-network cable
-four swords GC
-extra large demo disk

and maybe a couple more. though I still think nintendo would do fine if they go back to throwing in a second controller (or maybe four...and then they don't have to ship out extras too stores...damaged ones could be replaced through nintendo) and I'd be willing to pay the bit extra for it.

I assume it doesn't come with a free game anymore then?

We don't know that yet, but initial indications are that it DOES still come with a free game.  We're meeting with Nintendo today and should get confirmation one way or the other.

This is a great idea.  Getting the GameBoy Player as a free pack-in is hot...if I had a GBA but no Gamecube I'd definitely buy this package.  For $149.99 you can't go wrong.

I love the idea. I think it is a really great way of increasing the value of the system without having to drop the price to the point that it looks worthless. Hopefully we'll also see a party game pack in time for MKD, as SatansNemsis has suggested in his post.

I also think this beats the idea of a GC SP, which I think it is unneccessary from an aesthetic point of view. Just phase out the Indigo color and the GC now becomes a very attractive piece of harware.

That sounds like a fantabulous idea!  Does anyone know how much the GBPlayer will cost alone?

Good question Alliedrally68. The GBA player by itself is going to cost $49.99 here. So your getting $200 worth of Nintendo hardware for $150. Hopefully they still throw in the free game if they do.....I know there sales are gonna go through the roof. As egman said "its a great way of adding value to system without having to drop the price to the point the system looks worthless." They are still charging $149.99 but they just made the system look like an infinitely better value. Now when a customer says why should I get a GC it doesn't play CDs or DVDs, the store rep can say "Yes that is true but the GC does something PS2 and X-box doesn't it plays the entire library of Gameboy games."
Brilliant strategy by Nintendo.

Exactly.  It's brilliant.  Now people that don't even have a GBA can have access to all the great GBA games out there.  Now if we can just shrink the Gamecube/GBA combo down to handheld size...*pulls out shrinking ray*

This looks like an excellent deal.  The GBA player pack-in is genious.  People who might not have bought a GBA now have a reason to buy its games.  It also doesn't make the GCN look like a crappy bargain console.  Luckily I bough a GBA at launch, since I already own a GCN too..

This deal also helps in marketing the GCN-GBA connection Nintendo seems to be focusing on.

they should just package the cube a gbasp together. that would move gamecubes like mad!!! if they put the gc, gbasp and a playa for 200....sweet action.

Actually, this would be a step in the other direction.  With the GB Player, one cannot hook up his GC and GB Player to enjoy the connection capabilities.

On another note, I'm beginning to feel annoyed that I bought GCN at launch ($199 with no free stuff!)

yeah, packaging the gc with the old gba would have been the better option if nintendo really wants to push the link. it should sell some systems either way.

I saw an ad on TV but I think it was a USA commercial. It offered GCN plus the one of 4 games deal for $149.99. That seems a little low for Canadian funds but it was the first time I have seen that commercial and it was aired right after E3 ended so it had me thinking.
