Wii Game Data Sizes
« on: January 18, 2012, 04:25:40 AM »
Hello, my fellow forum folks. I am currently working on a side project that is going to list all of the Wii games ever made and then post their file sizes, or how much space they take up on the disc. Any help would be appreciated.

Try searching some warez info sites like abgx.net and stuff, read the .nfo's I think they usually list that info.

Well, its not information you were ever intended to have. The only people who would know aside from those who are involved in the industry would be pirates so you'd have to get the info from a warez site like what Brandogg suggested. But even then I don't know how well you could trust that, because pirates who tamper with the games to either remove copy protection things or compress stuff or remove videos to save space might result in altered file sizes versus what it would be on a retail disc. But I could be wrong.

Is this related to your other project to put every virtual console game on its own SD card? How did that idea turn out?

I have no intention of doing anything illegal by seeking this information. Yes, this is related to my project to put every Wiiware and Virtual console game on its own flash drive. Here is a link to my latest endevour for that project:

Nope.
Anyone with a usb loader would have this info.  You put in your game and it copies it to a hard drive so you don't have to cycle through discs the next time you want to change your game.

You need to find someone with a lot of games who puts them on a hard drive with the homebrew channel Kytim.

When PS360 games are installed onto a HDD, is that just a portion of toatal amount of data on the disc or just a part of it?

If the game is installed on the hard drive, generally that means the entire game is on there and you don't need a disc, so that would be the entire file size.

I can't speak for PlayStation 3 games, but Xbox 360 games that have been installed still require the disc be in the system to play them.

Its hard to say because they always require the disc to be in the drive even after its been installed to the HDD. That's perfectly understandable, because if they didn't require the disc then there's nothing to stop games from spreading from friend to friend without people buying new copies. But with that said, I have no idea if all the data is copied to the HDD or just some.... but keep in mind the data on the disc is probably less than what it is on the HDD, because on the disc it might be in a highly compressed form in order to save space, but when its on the HDD it might expand in order to be more easily processed by the machine.

You also have to factor in any DLC and patches which further complicates the size of the game.

Yes. Now I remember that when you install a game on a HDD it is in fact putting the entire game itself on that HDD. Developers made a fale safe tha prevents the entire game from being installed so that you can not buy a game, install it for free and then retun to the retailer.

Oh, I guess I was only thinking of Alan Wake, which I have downloaded but comes on a retail disc.

Of course download games (including Xbox On Demand games) don't require the disc. When I got my new Xbox 360, it was the one that included a download code for Alan Wake.

Yeah, I thought downloading it that that way was the same thing as saving the disc to the hard drive.

I am sure it's technically possible to do that, but I think we all know the reason why it won't. Like SixthAngel said, publishers are worried that consumers may copy the game to their console and then either return the game or share it with friends. What if a group of 30 people agreed to chip in $2 each so they could buy a game and install it on all their HDD's? That is 1 sale compared to 30 possible sales.

Off subject, but it's a simple hack to install a switch that lets you eject your game disc after the 360 verifies you have the game if it's installed on the hard drive. Makes for cheap LAN parties.

The Xbox 360 will only install the require data from the disc, not the entire disc, btw (when installing through the dashboard).
