So I almost died
« on: January 14, 2012, 06:47:03 PM »
It started back in October when I went on diet, reducing my calorie intake and eating very little bread, pasta, and carbs.

This gave me some severe constipation and a little bit before Christmas, I started feeling bad, no appetite abdominal pain, chills and fatigue. Then about Christmas, I began to notice blood in my urine.

Laxatives helped my constipation but the other symptoms came and went, some becoming severe at night. Being stubborn I didn't go to the doctor until the pain got so bad I was bed ridden for a couple of days.

I went to the doctor and he diagnosed me with hypertension (high blood pressure) and had me take a blood test to investigate further.

The next day he called me and said I needed to check myself into the emergency room right away because my blood was toxic.

I went to emergency room and the doctor told me my creatinine levels were the second highest she had ever seen (19.0, they should be 1.0) and she was surprised I was walking and talking. I had renal failure, meaning my kidneys were not working. They started me on dialysis right away.

I'm still the hospital but my stats are improving and my kidneys don't look like they are dead. I have a kidney biopsy on Monday, but I hope to get discharged soon after that.

I was feeling so bad I didn't even have the energy to finish Skyward Sword. If you're sick for an extended period of time, I encourage you to see a doctor because it my be something serious like Kidney Failure

Good god man! I'm glad your still kicking! Once you get out of there and start to feel like your old self I hope you really start changing your diet and exercise routines.  If that was the problem anyway.

Take up Tai Chi, that'l heal you up in no time!

Oh man, that sucks... you shouldn't ignore bad symptoms like blood in the urine and things like that. I know a lot of people hate going to the hospital or fear it, but if you want to live its the best thing you can do.

Is it possible what you had could be kidney stones? You said it started with a change in diet. I know certain foods can cause you to develop stones in your kidneys, and that would explain the blood in your urine and the kidney damage.

They did two ultrasounds and didn't find any stones or tumors and they blood flow seems okay. My kidney specialist is very cautious and thorough so she hasn't said for sure what it is yet, but another doctor told me that they believe it was Nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) I think the blood pressure was a factor, but not sure what else28

I've lost 29 pounds so far since I started my diet in October, so it hasn't been all bad.

I know a lot of people hate going to the hospital or fear it [...]

Correction, a lot of people simply can't afford to go to the hospital. Financially, they can't handle being thousands and thousands of dollars in debt... and that's just for a doctor's visit, a referral, and a handful of tests.

Fortunately, ShyGuy found away around that problem.

Then about Christmas, I began to notice blood in my urine.

That was more than enough of a sign indicating you to go to a hospital, but I see where you're coming from as I am the same way... the stubbornness to go see a doctor.

I'm glad your alright now, and hopefully you won't catch another surprise.

By the way if your doctor suggests that you should drink more water, and you don't trust the quality of water that you get through your tap, then I'm going to suggest 2 things:

1 - A bobble, http://www.waterbobble.com/. I've got a couple of the 18.5oz bottles, and their perfect for me, as I wasn't someone that would usually drink water like any other human being should. Although I still don't drink the "more than a liter a day" of water, and I don't intend to.

2 - If you have money for a home water filtration system, or even just one sink filtration system then make sure to get a R.O. (Reverse Osmosis) water filtration system. They usually also include a  UV light to kill off any remaining bacteria.

If all you did was give up eating bread and pasta I don't see how that could be anything but a good thing. Did you take up eating other stuff to take its place? Maybe that's the issue. It sounds kinda like you are talking about an atkins style diet, so maybe you have been eating a lot of meat/protein while avoiding the carbs?

I've heard that toxins are stored in fatty tissue, and as you lose that fat, the toxins are released into your system for your body to dump. Too much at once though isn't a good thing.

That stinks ShyGuy.  Hope you feel better.

If you have insurance I tend to want to be cautious about things that feel out of whack simply because preventative is normally cheaper in the long run.  Though I'm amazed how many people don't go to the doctor when they have bloody urine.  If its on you poo you could have cut yourself.  There is no healthy scenario that blood should be in your urine.

Also glad that one of the first things you thought to do was come back to NWR to tell us about it.

I too am one of those guys who hates doctors, at least hear in America. I feel like I can never trust them. Will they give me something to mask my symptoms or will they help me get rid of it. If it aint lethal it's always some kind of mask.

I suggest if money or insurance is an issue, seriously try out some Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture, that's what I do. They'l hold on to your wrists and tell your your lifes story medical wise, I thought it was hooplah until I asked my doctor to scientifically explain it to me.

"creatinine"  Hmm I wonder if you where taking any protein shakes or something like that because those would boost your levels.

Or maybe the fatty cells in your body decided to rebel :0.

If he was eating nothing but meat that would also do it I think. That's how the Atkin's diet works, and it does work... you do lose weight on it, but eating huge amounts of protein is hard on your kidneys.

I would be extremely sad if you ever died Shyguy! I bet it's from stress over whether Xenoblade would come to America. Reggie ruins everything, even people's kidney functions! Gosh he is such and idiot.

If someone here ever died how would the rest of the people here ever know? Unless someone here knew them in real life we probably wouldn't. When you look at old threads and see posts by people from years ago who used to be here but vanished, it kinda makes you wonder. What happened to them?

Well I have people I've known through here on my Facebook, so if I perished I'd hope they'd notice and pass it along.

But hey, realistically speaking, I'm not going to die. Ever.

Also I'm glad you're okay ShyGuy, but I guess the whole weight-loss and and being unwell is going to put Extreme Sandwiches on an extended hiatus, eh?

Not that any of you would probably notice (or care) if I had stopped posting for an extended period of time, but I would want you all to know anyways.... just because.
