New Nintendo Wii Title Kikitrick Announced
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:14:58 PM »

A little surprise from the conference was a mysterious game featuring mysterious sounds.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28173

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata casually announced a new Wii title by Nintendo, Kikitrick, during the Nintendo Direct Conference today.

Very little was revealed about this title. According to Iwata, the theme of this "slightly weird" game is sounds, and the words "differentiate mysterious sounds" can be seen on the box art. Kikitrick will be released in Japan on January 19, 2012.

Not to be confused with Tricky Kick, the TG-16 game.

As much as their policies make Westerners crazy sometimes, I'm so glad Nintendo is a Japanese company with deeply local sensibilities. If they merely jumped on the global bandwagon, they'd try pumping out some bro-ey shooter. Instead, their new Wii game... is whatever this is. Cracks me up. Refreshing to see such a huge company continue to not care what so many people are saying about them and just keep making what makes them happy. 'Cause more often that not, it's what will make a lot of other people happy, too.

I am getting so sick and tired of the terms "bro-ey" and "dude-bro" being thrown around like candy on Halloween to cast a wide and rather unfair net on not only an entire genre, but in LittleIrves' case the entire Western games industry and its gamers.  Most of the time I see those terms used, they're being used on games that don't even fit that mold.  People just like using it when they're jealous that gamers actually want to buy FPS games.

Perhaps I should from now on refer to the entire Japanese games industry using a term that has an equal amount of stereotypical belittlement and disdain, like "rape sims", or perhaps some derogatory phrase related to Japanese games being archaic and years behind the rest of the world.  It would be just as shortsighted and lame.

As for this game, we'll never get it in NA like a lot of "slightly weird" Japanese games, and from how vague this game description sounds I don't think I'm going to altogether miss it.  It could be interesting, though.

There is nothing at all derogatory about the word "bro" or "dude" or "dude-bro". However, there is something always wrong with rape.

I believe Mr. Irves was speaking in generalities.  Which works in discussions as long as no one interprets the implication of trends as totalities.
The recent trends from Western devs is to be utterly petrified of making a game whose narrative philosophy isn't "shoot first, ask questions later" or "my way or the highway" or "I eat a bowl of steroids for breakfast" or "women should either be in their underwear or dual-wielding bazookas (no innuendo intended)"... and other cliches that make "power" appeals from a very adolescent male perspective.

When Western devs show the security to build a big-budget game around a character who looks and acts more like ...

and less like...

then the perception of that trend will stop.

Again, just so we don't get into a debate of extremes here.... there are exceptions to these trends and there is also a time and place for machismo.  But that is just not "all the time" and "everywhere".

So until the West follows Japan's lead in crafting men who look like women or children and have massive emotional and psychological issues, the stigma of Western characters looking like "steroid-abusing muscle-heads" will never end?  Yeah, that sounds awfully fair.   ::)   People really need to get used to the fact that there are many valid artistic interpretations in games (yes, even the effeminate and anime styles), especially as Japan continues to decline in overall relevance and their art becomes less prevalent.

Misinterpret all you like.  My intention was to show a need for balance.  Which is why I said "more like" and "less like" instead of "exactly like" and "not at all like."

A polyphonic balance that uses all paints in the palette and all colors in the rainbow.  Clear enough?

As it is now, the dudebro chord has been strummed so hard for so long that the strings are fraying.

I'm not that interested in the style of games like Gears of War but I don't like the idea of Nintendo outright ignoring popular genres.  It's about variety.  I complain about titles I'm not interested in like Wii Sports and I get raked over the coals.  The argument is that casuals deserve to have games made for them too.  Okay, well what about FPS fans?  What about those that want "dudebro" kind of shooters?  No, Nintendo shouldn't cater to them!

What it really is that whatever popular genre Nintendo doesn't have due to shitty third party support is put down by loyal Nintendo diehards.  The N64 doesn't have RPGs?  Well RPGs suck and are overrated.  The Gamecube controller can't handle fighting games?  Well those button combo fighting games suck anyway, I prefer SSB.  If you praised GTA you got "what you want Mario killing hookers?!"  Online games suck.  HD graphics suck.  First person shooters suck (except on the N64 when Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were awesome).  No one thought RPGs sucked on the Super Nintendo.

What it really is that Nintendo misses the boat on some videogame trend that takes off and tells their fans that they don't really want it anyway because it sucks and a percentage of the most loyal fans just instantly doublethink it and help spread the propaganda.

Do you know what I would want to see?  A Wii game that actually has a chance in hell of being released in North America!  A "bro shooter" would actually get past Reggie's uptight approval process.  And often with these types of games Nintendo stays away from I would like to see what they could do with them.  When Nintendo and Rare made an FPS is was fuckin' great!  Often there are popular third party games that feel kind of rough around the edges to me and I would love to see how the genre would be done with Nintendo's level of polish.  Sometimes I think "this is pretty good but Nintendo could do this so much better".  Of course we often don't see that and instead Nintendo tries to sour their fans on the genre.
