Skylanders: DLC... or something different.
« on: October 20, 2011, 02:48:16 AM »
So, the game itself aside (for those who have played it), I'm curious as to what y'alls thoughts are on the business model that the Skylanders game has.

I keep seeing it likened to DLC - if that's the case, there's some good and some bad with it...  The "bad" - it's one of those cases where the DLC is already on the disc, and you just have to pay to unlock it.  This idea doesn't bother me, personally - so long as the full-priced game has similar content for a full game of its type.  However, with Skylanders... man, if you don't buy at least 5 more figures there's a lot you're going to miss out on.  You can beat the game with the three that come packed in, but there appears to be so much more that you really need one of each element to do... so, $35-$40 worth of DLC to play the vast majority of the game... ick.

The "good" - the DLC isn't tied to one system.  Hell, it isn't even tied to one company's system - my Whirlwind figure works on my 3DS, my Wii and someone else's PS3/360... as often as I want, as many times as I want, with no restrictions.  As long as everything still works, I'll be able to break these puppies out in 20 years and use them without working about having to redownload something from a non-existent server or such.  You're actually getting something physical.  For those of us who still like touching, we get to - and man, these tiny figures are so much more cool than shiny discs.
So... thoughts?
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I was hoping this was going to be about the two expansion sets and what they bring to the table..  Also technically if you own the Wii and the 3DS version you only need 3 more figures. (Spyro/Dark Spyro being the type duplicates.)

I now own the game for 3DS and 360 (I know, I know, I'm a horrible Nintendo writer) and three extra figures I purchased separately so that I have one of each type. I'm somewhat ashamed of myself, but I regret nothing.

You'll get it back but its more of a dash.  My wife is addicted to this game now.  Which is good we have something to play.  I know why the Console version doesn't have jumping.  I can play with my 3 year old son on that one but, simple jumping on the 3DS version gets him lost.

After playing a good amount of the console version I like it but the 3DS version is all around the better game.  Especially with the abilities. I rarely get an ability upgrade that changes how I play a character on Console.  While on the 3DS version I got a lot of new abilities that changed how I played the character.  Mostly because it allowed chaining or power up for certain combos etc.

I want to mention I hate the consoles Portal of Power.  I like to just plug it in so I wouldn't have to worry about batteries.  We literally went through 2 sets of batteries for it since I opened the game on November 24th.  I got the Energizer Ultimates for it know so it shouldn't be a problem.  I know those are good for 100+ hours on a wiimote.  Not to mention the little button what blends into the side you have to press.  Why couldn't it just be a press top like the 3DS version?
