TouchPad firesale
« on: August 20, 2011, 03:34:08 AM »
I assume several people have already heard about this since it was announced days ago, but Hewlett-Packard is shutting down WebOS and related devices. Not it appears that they are doing a fire sale to get rid of their inventory. Apparently right now many stores in Canada and HP's website have slashed the price of the 16GB and 32GB models of the HP TouchPad from $499 and $599 to $99 and $149. It's supposed to be made official today (Saturday) and no official US announcement has been made so far. Even if you don't really care about the TouchPad that much, that is a pretty good deal and maybe worth considering for people who want a tablet for storing music and videos and stuff.

I don't believe so. I haven't heard that it can. In any case, webOS is a pretty good operating system so if you want a decent tablet, you can't go wrong with that price. That is, IF you even want a tablet. I tried it a few times and it was really nice. It multitasks better than ever other mobile OS out there. It's a shame a company not employed by a bunch of pansies didn't get their hands on webOS so it'd have a fighting chance. HP took way too long to get new hardware out the door and then gave up almost immediately. I thought HP had the capital to make it worthwhile and ubiquitous considering they have their hands in a ton of products, but it didn't work out that way. HP is now trying to be IBM and will probably fail at that.

I considered getting a Touchpad since they're on a fire sale but I struggled to justify it.

As long as it has Pandora or something then it's worth it. Do they play Flash?

I managed to get one. If you weren't on it last night or very early this morning, they're gone now.

They're all coming from the same warehouse(s) so I imagine they can't fulfill those orders. I could really care less about that thing, but it would be great for our shop as a portable media player.

Looks like a group of people calling themselves Touchdroid will work on porting Android to the TouchPad. They just started though and not all members have even gotten their hands on a TouchPad. Their goal is to start with a stable beta of Androdi Gingerbread (2.3), then move on to Honeycomb (3.0) while still supporting Gingerbread. If Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) is released in the middle of the project though, they will stop working on Honeycomb and switch over to ICS.

I'd still like to try and find one just for music, movies, etc. Haven't bothered to even look for one, but I'm sure it would be a waste of time by now.

Carphone Warehouse was selling them here 2 hours ago, all gone. The 16gb version was £89.
