If it's a choice between Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, I'd have to go with Chrono Trigger, especially if you aren't really into RPGs. I'm actually not very fond of them meself, so I'm somewhat similar to you. Chrono Trigger is more accessible: the combat system is more streamlined, there are no random battles, and there isn't really any grinding since each area has a set number of enemies, which makes things a lot more balanced. The story may not be as good as Final Fantasy VI, that's hard to say since they're so different and Chrono Trigger is less dramatic and has some more lighthearted moments in it. The time travel element might seem cliché but it works, and the characters' personalities don't really come out until later in the game. Plus unlike FF games it has a silent protagonist, a concept which not everyone likes.
Oh, and the music is some of the best I've heard composed for a videogame. But that's one of the more subjective elements about it so no guarantee you'd like it.
