Donkey Kong. 94. Discuss.
« on: August 06, 2011, 05:10:06 AM »
I never got to play the original Donkey Kong 94, so I've been having the time of my life with it on VC.  I thought it would be great to discuss, especially since there is really no instructional manual and there are just so many undocumented features.

For example:  I was stuck on 7-10 for the longest time, until I finally realized:  The temporarily ladders are on a timer, BUT, the timer resets each time you start a new ladder or floor.  So if you start one ladder, then race across the level and hit another temporary ladder, then you've just effectively reset the timer, so the first temporary ladder will now last longer.  Technically, if you had a level that had a series of temporary ladders and floors one after another, then you can keep those going indefinitely.  The timer just will never run out.

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

I have fond memories of this game. It's one of the first games I owned back when I got my first Gameboy (ice blue Pocket, RIP: never trust your little brother to not **** your **** up).

I played this originally on my gameboy on a trip to St Louis way back when it came out.   I got it on my 3ds probably less than a week ago.  It's been a lot of fun to replay.  Forgot how nicely designed some of the stages are.   Good short puzzles that I have mostly forgotten.  After all it's been nearly two decades.

I would say the only real fault the game has, it not being able to save at anystage.  Then again with the VC and save states, that doesn't matter.  Been a blast to replay so far.  I think I'm only to world 5 or so though.

I never played this game and I thought I'd try it out. I sort of remember it and I have a vague feeling about being upset with Mario flipping around... I don't know...
The game play reminds me of Donkey Kong Jr for the NES, which I played to death so the whole game feels really good. I'm in world 4 and I really like it. I kind of don't want it to ever end especially since you can't replay the levels.
So far this is the only game I've gotten from the eShop and I don't really want anything else until I've beaten this monkey and got my woman back.

I didn't play this game until a year or two ago, and damn does it hold up well. It updates the classic Donkey Kong gameplay brilliantly, making the gameplay even better, adding more complex puzzles, and tons of levels. At $4 on the 3DS, this game is a steal.

I originally got into this game because I played Mario vs. Donkey Kong on the GBA, which is also awesome (and will be coming to 3DS Ambassadors). It's a shame the series turned into the Lemmings-esque Mini stuff. Not that the DS games are bad, but I love the gameplay in DK'94, and I'd love to see more of it.

I'm on DK Peeking out with hands in the tower.  I play it when I have a spare moment or on break.  Great game.  Looks like the follow up will ruin it for me but we'll see.  According to the 3DS I have about 10hours into it.

Hmm...You're probably farther than me, I'm on like 8-10 and only have 8 hours logged in, and I've died ALOT.

But it really is a perfect mobile game.  I think the average amount of time you spend on each level is maybe 1 minute or so, unless you die.  And its amazing how it predicted a lot of Mario concepts, like the mushroom that makes you small, for example.

I actually beat it yesterday.  Watching the credits now and it says "The End" and I have no idea how to get it back to the start screen...  So that only took me 11:07 of bite size session.  Which makes it the forth played thing on my 3DS.

Netflix
Super Princess Peach
SSFIV
DK94

Though Netflix is about double what Super Princess Peach is at 30 hours...

Good game.  I like the variety it had.  The levels weren't punishingly hard but, some of them you look back and go how did I manage to think of that.  I hear the Spiritual sequal has vastly more switch puzzles.  I probably won't enjoy it.

I kind of don't want it to ever end especially since you can't replay the levels.

Press up or down while selecting your save slot.

I think like most games of the era you're supposed to turn the system off after the credits roll. A+B+Start+Select might work too.

I'm always scared to do that.  Even when I was playing these games on the original Gameboy back in the day.  So I finally hit the Reset... My save is saying 9-5... Oh well.

That's the last save point. The game doesn't save before the final battle, you always have to redo at least the four stages before it.

I was stuck on the 4th level for about  a week and then I fired it up yesterday and the solution came to me like magic. The levels are really really wel done. How many levels in all?

I'm glad this was discussed on the NWR podcasts; I never would known to give it a chance, otherwise.  I love it so far!

100.

Well, 101 if you count the final battle but all ads said 100 so I'm gonna tag this as a spoiler
