Naming the WiiU Controller
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:27:38 PM »
We are all calling the Wiiu by different names and we all call the controller by different names too.

So I thought it would be fun to decide on a universal name for just the controller for everyone that doesn't already have a nickname for it.

If what you want isn't listed, just vote other and then name it in the thread.
I will then add it to the poll if it's a valid name.

Everyone can change their votes at any time should a better name show up on the poll.

Part of me wants to name it "Gameboy" for nostalgia's sake, but that would confuse everyone. I chose other since I didn't like the options. I'll get back to you on the name. uCon just reminds me of the University of Connecticut.

Gotta love how the poll randomizes order after you change something.
I only had to edit it 2 more times after I edited it just to keep "other" as the last option.

The controller should adopt the name "Wii U" just so that the console itself would then have to be named something different.

Remember the NES controller's name?  Oh right you don't because it was just the NES controller.  So why does this even need a name?  Why can't it just be the Wii U controller?

It would be useful to have some sort of shorthand for the controller.

Also, nicknames are fun.

The controller needs a name because it's not the only controller anymore because Wii/WiiU has 43 different controllers...

You're absolutely right. The first time a controller was ever officially given a name (that I know of and can recall off hand) was Sony's Dualshock controller for the PS1. But that was likely necessary in order to distinguish itself from the original playstation controller which had no name and lacked the analogs. Every other system that I know of up until that point did not have a name for it. Even controllers afterwards like the Xbox controller, Gamecube controller, etc. didn't really have names either.

It seems to only be necessary to name the controller when you have a console which ends up having multiple controllers and then the need arises to differentiate them somehow.

The Advantage wasn't packed in with the system.  It was a separate product, and so it needed a separate name.  I'm repeating myself between threads here, but the only packed in controllers (at launch) to have separate names were the DualShock 2, SixAxis, and Wii Remote, as I recall, and the Wii Remote is arguable.

I like uPad. It seems like a natural fit after WiiMote. Plus, it welcomes the iPad comparisons.

It seems like the extra controllers will be Wii remotes and CC's.  Since we already can identify those, we could always not name the screen one and just call it the "main" or "normal" controller.  If you owned a joystick or something like that for your NES or SNES what did you call the normal controllers to differentiate them?

Though I'll bet there was some official Nintendo name for the pre-Gamecube controllers.  We probably just never used that naming convention.  Did anyone ever call cartridges "game paks" like Nintendo always did?

Knowing Nintendo, it won't have a clever name. They wouldn't even call the remote a Wiimote. I wouldn't be surprised if it had a clunky name like Wii U Screen Controller, but they might try something a little more compact like Wii U Book or UBook.
