Ubisoft's squad shooter hopes to make smart use of the Wii U's new controller and online system.

Ghost Recon is making its first appearance on Nintendo consoles with Ghost Recon Online for Wii U. Just announced by Ubisoft, the squad shooter's developers have promised deep online integration and direct utilization of the Wii U's controller.

The game is played on the new controller and the designers have drawn from military command tablets, which resemble it.

Ghost Recon features a UI system dubbed CROSSCOM 2.0. The idea is that the touch screen surface is deeply integrated with the in-game action. One example is that each player has a flying drone that they can deploy and control with the controller. The drone can observe his opponent from above and the location of the hostile was then displayed on the HUD on the TV. Players will also be able to share the intel they collect with squad mates. They can also  issue directives to their squad-mates, such as positions to attack or move towards, with a tap of the screen. Players can even coordinate their attacks by guiding missiles onto targets using the gyro and the controller screen. The actual combat, however, is controlled with traditional control buttons.

The game features three class: assault, recon, and specialist. The assault is, as the name would imply, the attacking character. It is equipped with items like a riot shield, which it can use to ram people. Recon is capable of engaging in optical stealth. The specialist can deploy a large energy dome, called AEGIS Shield, which repels bullets. The AEGIS is large enough that multiple squad members can hide inside it.

The online component of the game will include a  personalized account system, a flexible friends list, ranking, match making, and Ghost Feed. The Ghost Feed resides on the Wii U's control screen; it will display a running Twitter-like feed of persistent online stats and other online activities for yourself and friends.

Ghost Recon Online features a single-player mode, as well as a still unspecified list of online modes. Ubisoft will release Ghost Recon Online in 2012, and Ubisoft's goal is for it to be a launch title for Wii U. While Ubisoft wouldn't discuss pricing at their press event for the game, it has been reported that they plan to release Ghost Recon Online as a download title with a price of roughly $10. This is a contract to the free to play, with premium add-ons, pricing of the upcoming PC title of the same name.
