new GCN games - "Fear" and "Ground Zero"
« on: May 07, 2003, 09:53:52 PM »
In the new Gamepro, they mention two new GCN games, Fear and Ground Zero. Apparently, they posted more details in the gamepro forums, but I can't find the thread. The details were posted in gaming-age forums:

Quote

Many of you may have noticed a little blurb in this month's issue of GamePro, regarding new Nintendo Franchises, "Fear" and "Ground Zero." Man when you guys get a little tidbit of pre-E3 Nintendo news you guys really go crazy. Anyways to quell the flow of e-mails I'm going to shut you all up with a little bit more info, and some answers to your questions. Get em while they're HOT!

First of all, there are two games, one called "Fear" and one called "Ground Zero." Both names we assume to be only code names at the moment. Fear is being developed internally at Nintendo and Miyamoto is heading the project himself. The game follows "a young and sheltered boy who challenges himself to overcome his many fears." From what we have heard the game will be level based with each level ending with him overcoming a fear of some sort. There will be a theme to each level, for example we have heard of a level where he overcomes his fear of heights by making his way up a treacherous mountain.

Ground Zero is actually a joint development by Nintendo and an unnamed second party developer or two. A game that will "be bigger than anything you have seen so far on Gamecube." That is all we were told.

For more information wait till E3.

Since I can't find the gamepro thread, I don't know if it is true. The info seems legit.

Fear sounds intriguing.  I am anticipating a Zelda or Giftpia style adventure, but I really don't have a firm image in my head yet.

Ground Zero sounds a lot like "Game Zero".

An unnamed second party "or two"

Wha...Nintendo + Second Party + Second Party!
Retro Studios and Factor 5?
Silicon Knights and Intelligent Systems?
Well ok IntSys and Retro are fully owned so they can be considered first party...SK has too much on its hands already...And Factor 5 hasn't said anything about being a second party...
Camelot and Zoonami? Neither have been announced a second party officially but Nintendo is very interested in Zoonami and Camelot is really close to Nintendo these days...
Maybe it's some sort of RPG...

edit: I don't see this article anywhere on the new Gamepro...Link please?

I saw that same info in the IGN Cube boards. Game Zero...hm.....bigger than anything before. That would mean bigger than Zelda, Metroid, SMS, and maybe even RPGs like Skies of Arcadia. Haven't played any RPGs this gen yet cept for some PSO so I not sure on that.

I wouldn't be surprised if in Fear, they use something similar to the insanity meter/effects of ED. Like in the example they mentioned, if you move too quickly up the mountain he would become dizzy more quickly and there would be some visual dizziness effects. Thus requiring you to move more slowly and with more precision.

Why does Nintendo have to have it's E3 press conference right in the middle of my classes. I wanted to watch it streaming on Gamespot, oh well will have to wait till IGN gets their copy onto their servers.
Pietriots, we roll out to get the lol out.

There's this Spanish site I found that puts IGN Insider and GS Complete (mostly Insider) videos up for free...At fast dl speeds too. Of course I don't use this site since that would be breaking the law and such.

Next week everyone! E3 is nigh!
When I first saw 'Fear', and you said that Nintendo are developing it, I instanty thought of a scary game. And when I saw 'Ground Zero', I thought of a bomb test site, or something.
Nintendo's mature games surfacing? Nah. Just cool names for what would potentially great games.

maybe Ground Zero would take place in a post-apocalyptic world, starting with a thermonuclear blast (that would be graphically insane) and then you have to navigate through something and do something else to accomplish some goal and etc
I'll shut up now...

Haha. a post-apocalyptic future, starring Kirby! Kirby can just suck the nuclear blast, and spew it all over his enemies!
Sure, his insides will be all screwed up, but...yeah.

Hey Grey Ninja! Have you ever tried going here? It's in French, but they keep pretty updated with their movies. Hope that helps. Oh yeah, I wonder how Ground Zero could possibly be bigger than MP or Zelda, because in my current state of mind I can't concieve of such possibilities.
Sure getting shot the first few times IS annoying but knowing that after a hards days work you'll eventually get a meal.........well that just makes the day worth it.

I thought Nintendo would just publish the game developed by Zoonami but if Nintendo is actually helping out in the development, I sense another Goldeneye classic in the making.

Martin Hollis and Nintendo taking 2-3? years working on a FPS or is it just an Adventure? based on another planet. That in itself is something of quality brewing.

I cannot stress enough how 2003 = Nintendo & co's best ever E3 show

Im staggered. Im stoked.

Concerning the game "Fear" what if this character you get to play is *cough*homophobic?*cough* LOL, I cant imagine what sort of themes and interactions you would have to overcome that "Fear".

Both games sound very interesting. I applaud Mr. Miyamoto and Nintendo for taking a chance by creating new potential franchises. It is ideas and innovations such as "Fear" that set Nintendo apart from the competition.

It's been known for a while Zoonami and Nintendo were making Game Zero. We're talking about Ground Zero, though, and how it's possbile that it's another name for Game Zero.

Ground Zero sounds intriguing and so does fear.  Also, if I get my facts straight, isn't Ground Zero the nickname of the site of the ill-fated Twin Towers of the World Trade Center?  Odd nickname for a game, is it not?  Perhaps the game deals with terrorists situations similar to Rainbow Six.  Just my guess.

Ground Zero is the name for the epicenter of a great disaster.  Nothing more.

Berto2k, you wouldn't happen to be Canadian would you?  If so, what bank do you use to get your cheque cards?    And will it work with online retailers?

The term ground zero, in general, refers to the center of whatever it is you're talking about. That's how the spot of the World Trade Center got it's name and and that is it's unofficial nickname now.
