Oh ho, MrWizard just announced the EVO 2013 LINEUP and there are surprises! July 12-14!

There are eight main games this year, for starters.

 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
 Tekken Tag Tournament 2
 Mortal Kombat 9
 Street Fighter X Tekken 2013
 King of Fighters XIII
 Persona 4 Arena
 ~ MYSTERY GAME ~

The last game will be voted in by supporters. Except the votes are dollars for breast cancer research! Whichever group raises the most money will get their game in as a main event. Here's the pool of candidates:

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +R
 Super Smash Bros. Melee
 Super Smash Bros. Brawl
 SFIII Third Strike, Online Edition
 Virtua Fighter 5
 Divekick
 Melty Blood Actress Again Current
 MLP: Fighting is Magic
 Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
 Dead or Alive 5
 Capcom vs. SNK 2
 Injustice
 Skullgirls
 Street Fighter II Super Turbo
 Blazblue
 Soul Calibur V
 Darkstalkers 3

If your game doesn't make it, there's a good chance there's a side tournament going on for it.

If you want Evo seeding points, you'll be able to try at these tournaments in the US. International ones to be announced! You don't need seeding points to join Evo.

"Street Fighter X Tekken 2013"  :(  Surprised to see it coming back, it was the least viewed or hyped game last year.

Kinda surprised to see Persona 4 Arena, should be interested to see what country has top players for that game.

SC5 didn't make it :( not even an year old, Skullgirlz and Playstation ALL-star were left out as well.

Surprised Injustice didn't make the list, best way to promote an game is to have competitions IMO.

Yeah, Mr Wizard said SFxT was not coming back but here it is herp derp derp derp. I can't imagine anybody is excited about it. I can only guess that the Evo committee expects v2013 to be good (that update comes out on the 29th). I was mad as heck about it for like 5 minutes, and then all was forgiven when the number of main games was upped to eight. It's usually 5-6.

One of these is getting in with the vote thingy! There are just too many good games now. I'm pretty sure there will be side tournaments for anything else a decent number of people want to play...

Well, it only comes out like two months before Evo and might not even turn out to be good. But it might get voted in anyway, or Warner could just buy it in with boob cancer money. But like, Evo isn't there to *promote* games, really, as suspicious as I am of MrWizard getting trucks full of McRibs

I think these are the likely ones, but I can only guess on who is willing to spend how much. MLP and Divekick have the LOL factor going for them, PSAS and Injustice might just get bought in (or even VF5 potentially, Sega put up a lot of money last year IIRC), and GG, ST, and Skullgirls have some loyal fans. I don't think BlazBlue will get in because it's between versions -- the current one is arcade only and nobody is gonna go for the dated one. I think everything else is too busted, old, or niche to have a chance unless some rich Saudi prince really likes Melty Blood or something.

Vote for Skullgirls because that is the game I am most likely to win :evil;. Only 22 days to vote!

~ THINGS ARE HAPPENING ~

http://shoryuken.com/2013/01/13/evo-2013-donation-drive-standings-and-rule-update/

tl;dr  MLP won't be guaranteed to be ready by EVO so it's out of the running for a main event, but will still be featured as an exhibition thing and will continue to accept donations for boob cancer research.

Results so far:

1.MLP, Fighting is Magic: $3,519.50
 2.Super Smash Bros. Melee: $1,404.32
 3.Skullgirls: $814.22
4.Guilty Gear XX, Accent Core Plus : $767.90
 5.Soul Calibur V: $387.41
 6.Divekick: $343.95
 7.Dead or Alive 5: $202.69
 8.Blazblue: $200.00
 9.Virtua Fighter 5: $191.00
 10.Super Smash Bros. Brawl: $155.00

Please start the dickwaving for whatever game you think is best!

Skullgirls ($3200ish) overtook Melee ($2600) and that means I'm happy as a lobster. I hope it turns into a big ugly bidding war, especially since that money goes to boob cancer research. You can check current donations on the individual donation links at http://shoryuken.com/2013/01/08/evo-2013-details-game-lineup-get-your-game-to-evo-and-road-to-evo-events/

Melee isn't a fighting game, it's a party game, durpy-dur!

Can any game be suggested? If I had the money I would put $10,000 towards Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf for the NES.

Melee and Brawl would both be far better choices than Skullgirls. They are better games and would draw more interest in players and viewers.

IIRC you could nominate anything during some nomination phase they did through facebook, and if it got 500 people to support it, it got included in this phase.

I am right, Skullgirls is not as good of a fighting game and no one but hardcore fighting fan (a very niche group) will be more interested in watching Skullgirls.

But they also want to get people to actually WATCH (though watching other people video games is mind numblingly dull anyways). At least Melee and Brawl are entertaining to watch.

They're more interested in getting people to go than to watch, really. Also, even if Melee were to win, probably half of the supporters would be left butthurt over whichever ruleset they go with.

I definitely encourage anyone to go, even if you're not good at fighting games. It's fun, cheap to go, and there's lots of fun stuff to do and play. You might get laughed out if you take any of TJSpyke's positions, though.

Melee is an okay game, but Brawl is a bucket of AIDS. Witness its failure to garner any support. And, well, Skullgirls owns. If you don't think so, vote with your wallet. :evil;

Brawl is a good game, it gets hated on by people who suck and can't adapt. As for the Smash games in general, the best (and really, only) rule set is all weapons/stages/characters unlocked and free to use. Anything else is BS and does not show who the best player is.

The problem with any SSB game is the teir balance issues.  Nintendo doesn't release patches/updates so watching anyone playing becomes the same two-or three fighters.  Capcom's pretty good about yearly updates to keep games like SF 4 fresh.

Also rule set for SSB usually has item/weapons off if I recall.

-------------------------------------

The main reason to go to tournaments, tips :).  I spent 30-50 hours with SSF4A and had a hell of a time getting simple move  sets down and it took one pro player 30 seconds of watching me play to tell me that I was inputting the buttons to quickly.  Namely in SSF4 if you do the quarter circle motion you have to pause a 1/2 second before hitting whatever punch or kick.

Timing is so important in fighting games (that and distance) that most games don't bother to cover them at all leaving it up to guess work by the player--ugh.

----------------------------------------------------
Planning on hitting a few tournaments this year even though I haven't won a single match yet :0.  Someone has to be at the bottom.
