P4U charity event! Multiple tournaments and events over 24 hours. You can get a good look at the game with a lot of commentary if you haven't yet.

I picked up Persona 4 Arena, and after some installing & letting my controller charge a bit (along with setting my Bursts and One More Cancel commands to L2 and R2) I gave some of the tutorials and challenges a try.  The fighting system feels a little looser than something like BlazBlue, and that's not altogether a bad thing.  Inputs are fairly simple with primarily quarter circles + buttons, though it's going to take a while for me to wrap my head around this combat system.  Still, I cleared the Lesson mode without any difficulty.  The music is vintage Persona 4, and the game seems pretty fast and fun.

My only real complaint right now is that whenever the game displays Move commands on-screen, they're written in what seems to be Fight Stick language that even the BlazBlue games didn't use, with normal D-pad movements followed by a square grid of highlighted buttons.  The manual has the commands listed in normal Dualshock 3 terms, but not the game itself and I don't see an option to change it.  This layout is the normal Dualshock 3 face buttons rotated clockwise into a square grid and the buttons are highlighted the color of the appropriate shape on the face button, but it just gets needlessly confusing when I'm working my way through a combo list & I have to constantly remind myself that the buttons on-screen are shifted.  I don't give a **** if this game was originally in Japanese arcades.  This is a console game now, so when you display button icons and command strings they should use the iconography of the player's console.  Or at least give us the option of switching the displays from Fight Stick to Dualshock 3/Xbox 360 icons.

EDIT: Well, I managed to complete 196 of the 390 character challenges, averaging about 14-15 per character (with Yosuke at 17 and Aegis at 18).  Not bad considering I'm just learning the new game and generally do badly at these things.

How close are we to seeing Rainbow playable? Honestly I'll probably be pretty crestfallen if she's not pony Magneto

Well here is the thing The stage and the song is done. However the stage is done by someone else so the stages get sent to the team when they are done. I mean even thought we have Pinkie playable there isn't a stage for her yet but her song is out. There isn't an exact order when each new character gets updated.
So I would guess that at Canterlot Gardens is the best bet for a new character which is at the end of September. Mane 6 is a guest there and they I believe is going to have a tourney there as well.

They haven't shown any Rainbow Dash footage in the stream and Fluttershy was only showed off once and that was to show off one move and from what I hear from the live streams she has changed a bit.

They are. It's done as far as I know. Whatever is causing the delay, it's not the dev team. It's probably Konami.

Oh hey they made a statement about it today:

Quote
I'm not at liberty to discuss details, but creating and putting out any content on PS3/X360 is a very complex process. There are half a dozen companies which have a key role in the process and if even one of them gets out of synch with the rest it can slow things down. There were some synch issues. Good news is they seem to have all been resolved last week and the patch is going to start the testing and bug fixing process this week. This means it will still be several weeks before the patch goes live as even if everything goes perfectly (i.e. there are no bugs found during testing which need to be fixed) it takes at least 4 weeks from the time a patch starts testing to when it goes live through XBL/PSN. If there are bugs found which need to be fixed, that will add additional time. As for the PC version, much of the work done on the patch goes into the code base for the PC, so due to this and the fact that it is a small dev team, they need to fix all the bugs in the patch before they can move on to PC specific work.

We like the rest of the Skullgirls community wish both the patch and PC version could have been released much sooner, unfortunately, as usually happens in game development, things end up taking longer than you originally think it will.

A rare and exotic arcade stick, the one I've always wanted (since 3 months ago anyway). Let's get her out of that box...

Mine at last! But oh dear, those garish button colors and mad layout are unbefitting of a classy stick such as yourself!

Just a peek inside... I got something I wanna put in you :smug:.

after removing eight screws and six bolts ugh
Gorgeous! A real dark beauty!

SWAG

Also got some anime bullshit fighting games to go with my anime bullshit arcade stick! Yeah!

Nerd talk: I like Sanwa buttons better than Hori buttons because they are lighter to the touch. Hori buttons are still fine though. The wires for this stick are soldered on for some reason. MadCatz sticks are way, way more convenient to open up and root around in than Hori sticks.

Tiger owns, I always pick him in Pac-Man Fever.

If you didn't see this interview a couple weeks ago, apparently everybody at Rare wanted to make Killer Instinct 3 but Microsoft told them no. I hate everything and I want to die.

The new Rare hasn't earned the right to make a game anyone actually cares about.  The day they actually manage to make an above-average product for Microsoft, we can talk.

So are you saying they aren't allowed to make any good games until they make some good games? :brony

Though yeah, I'm not sure the project would fly right now since so many of their talented people have quit or been laid off. Still, I think Microsoft's fuckery would explain why the old games haven't been ported to XBLA.

You mean like Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day?  :brony 3 of those are on XBLA right now, and Conker was on the original Xbox and is generally not well-regarded. I think the only 2 we're missing that Rare COULD legally re-release are Jet Force Gemini and possibly Killer Instinct Gold. Whatever. I like JFG, but maybe it's better off in my rose-tinted memory. I don't know if they could release Blast Corps.

Also I finally ordered P4U now that it's not a hundred dollars here, after getting a taste of playing it in a Japanese arcade, the way god intended it. :smug:

You can put lipstick on a pig but then you're still playing freaking Monopoly.

I dug out Guilty Gear 2 for some pseudo-MOBA action but got stuck on a bullet hell boss that's 100% bullshit (you have to destroy targets to make him vulnerable but his vulnerability time is practically random since he can respawn the targets at will) plus the controls just aren't meant for bullet hell anyway. Then I got a craving for more incomprehensible bullshit story so I picked up BlazBlue on the Vita.

Man, there are still at least two HUD elements that I don't even have the slightest idea about. I couldn't beat the rapid cancel tutorial and haven't tried any tutorials past that yet. Beating the story mode seems feasible and maybe I'll find something less completely absurd to play by the time I've finished the game.

I put in BlazBlue CS myself when I saw this post to try the tutorial and see if I could help. It looks like it tries to make you rapidcancel as part of a big combo instead of just teaching it to you by itself so that's kind of dumb. :\

Here's the combo, don't worry if you don't understand my weirdo fighting game notation!

B xx C xx qcb+A xx RC, B xx C xx qcb+A, qcb+D

It does an easy rc lesson right after that that really should have come first:

dpm+C, RC

My advice: hitting A+B+C on the Vita is going to be awful so sell it and buy an arcade stick bind the command to L or R or something.

The combo makes you do

B, C, quarter-circle-back-A

twice, so think of it as one chunk, and maybe do it a few times by itself to warm up and get it in your muscle memory.

Then actually just start doing it twice!

B, C, quarter-circle-back-A
hit the rapidcancel button
B, C, quarter-circle-back-A

and then just keep doing that, and when you feel like it, add quarter-circle-back-D at the end and finish the tutorial. The next one is just a dragonpunch motion (z) and C, then a rapidcancel to make it safe (so that Ragna doesn't leave the ground after it hits).

Hope this helps, and that the tutorial on the Vita isn't arbitrarily different or something!

I know fighting game notation but inputting the whole string is too much for me (at some point I get confused between all the different things I have to do), I've almost got it one or two times but failed to pull the 214D off at the end. And yeah, ABC is on R for me. Hitting that with just the thumb would be nuts.

I've got an arcade stick for my 360 and PC but I prefer games portable since I'm a commuter.

Any idea on how soon for Skullgirls, Ty? I'm really liking the mechanics of the game so far, and can't wait to see what the dev does to improve the game.

Also, extra saucy, slutty characters, please!
