Captain America: Super Soldier Impressions

Captain America defeats Nazis with a shield that acts a great deal like the boomerang in Zelda. Video preview inside.

Scroll down to the bottom for ten minutes of direct-feed footage and a video preview.

While Captain America has appeared in some recent Marvel games, it has been well over a decade since he was the headliner and main playable character in a title. The Wii version of Cap’s new game is being developed by High Voltage Software, creators of The Conduit. Using gameplay elements derived from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, as well as classic beat-em up titles, Captain America: Super Soldier may have the right ingredients to make a fun superhero title.

The game is played utilizing the Nunchuk and Wii Remote. Hand-to-hand combat appears to be standard brawler fare, with Captain America being able to throw an assortment of punches and kicks. The controls for Captain America’s shield are where things get interesting. Similar to the controls for the boomerang in Twilight Princess, players can hit multiple targets with a single throw of Captain America’s shield. Holding down the C button will initiate “Focus Mode” where the game world will slowdown, and players can highlight targets by moving the Wii Remote’s cursor over them. Once the targets have been chosen, releasing the C button will send the shield flying. Players can also hold the Z button to raise Cap’s shield to deflect bullet fire back at enemies. You can also grab a stunned enemy and force them to use their own weapon on their friends. Stealth is another option for combat. Walk slowly behind an unsuspecting enemy and hit Z to tap them on shoulder and knock them out.

There are many hidden collectibles that can be found throughout the levels. A secret may be given away by something as simple as a crack in a wall. Players can unlock new costumes for Captain America by rescuing POWs and finding other hidden items.

Along with combat, there are also platforming sections where, for example, Captain America must swing on poles and jump on pipes. These sections are designed with a young target audience in mind and are easy to traverse. While there is some timing involving in jumping while swinging, usually your character will automatically land on the next platform.

Unlike the Conduit series, which uses High Voltage’s proprietary Quantum 3 Engine for advanced graphical effects, Captain America is using Terminal Reality’s Infernal Engine. The developer chose Terminal Reality’s engine because of its prowess with destructible environments. From the small sliver of gameplay I saw, there were a few nice explosions.

The controls worked very nicely in the demo. It was fun knocking out multiple enemies in one swoop, and there were quite a variety in moves available. The game will include the voice actors from the upcoming movie for the major characters.

Captain America: Super Soldier is scheduled to hit store shelves on July 19.

Is that a Devil May Cry style kudoos system I see.  I'm not to fond of the Capt model but I'm assuming this is during WWII because of the uniform he's in.  Though he had the more traditional shield then not the round one.  I don't see enough enemies yet...  Saluting the Soldiers... Awesome... Wait there was a Stark reference that means this is modern darn.. Then use the modern one piece style uniform.  Dude that grround fall with the Iron Man style slam was cool.  Should have tried throwing the guy into someone else thats always fun.  Looks interesting.

Apparently so. At least in the Captain America: The First Avenger trailer, there's a Stark present at the super soldier project site.

Hmmm... I'll have to watch it.  I haven't really bothered closely following since I probably see it if it was done with Dogs.

In the movie version, Tony Stark's father plays some kind of role.

And although Cap had a different shaped shield during WWII in the comics, the movie version is round.

They're keeping it true to the current movie.

It'll be nice if they include other (unlockable?) costumes.

The Stark thing thats fine.
The Round shield with the old costume thats where I really get disjointed on.  It just feels wrong.  Like Superman with Suspenders or a Capeless and earless Batman.  Since they take it from the Movie I'll put it as a movie complaint.

Well, the movie takes place during WWII. So, things are supposed to look old.... since it's the 1940s.

That looks pretty good. Are we going to get two solid movie tie in games in a row between this and Thor?

Part of the shock of coming out of being frozen forever was how style had changed and that was the shield...
Though I am glad their doing the origins right.  I really like how Iron Man setup the character and everything knowing they didn't need to jump right in.  I'm still mad they made Nick Fury Black though.  How will he sport his flat top with the grey to brown hair.  Why can't white men be Bad Ass too?  At least I'm sure the actor they have playing him will do him justice.  Just don't want him Retconned to being black in shows like Lex Luthor got.  It didn't seem to stick to King pin from the Daredevil movies but I've already seen a Black Fury in Iron Man: Armor Adventures...

Nick Fury was black in the Ultimate Universe, and was based off of Samuel Jackson, making the casting for him in the movies perfect.

Also, I think most of these Avengers-related film stories in general have more in common with the Ultimate Universe (at least in spirit), which did a rather good job of modernizing Marvel characters.

And where is Lex Luthor black?

Luthor is black in:

I only see snippets of the Ultimate universe.  Guess I'm not to surprise Nick Fury is Black in that one.  I sill like him being the grizzly white guy because its not a common character how he was done.

Their are a lot of items I would read if I had the money or access to the collection.  I keep thinking I might subscribe to Marvel's online deal but, well they don't have a reader for Windows Phone.

Looks like it could be fun!  :Q <- and that's how I am making my face right now as I am really surprised at how good it looks (not the graphics, but the play mechanism).
