Favorite 3DS Launch Game so far...
« on: March 30, 2011, 09:13:13 PM »
So I made this thread to post our various impressions of the launch games we picked up. Hopefully it will be helpful to others looking for a good game.

Pilotwings Resort
I've logged in about 3 hours so far in this game just trying to get gold stars on all the events up through silver. It is challenging! I haven't even touched free flight mode to try to unlock all the medals or attempted to get red stars on any events outside the first couple (red stars are achieved only after getting a perfect score). Honestly, I don't understand how much people are complaining about a lack of content in this game. Half the fun and concept of Pilotwings is experiencing flying the different vehicles in various different missions. The other half is perfecting your run on said missions and discovering all the secrets on the island.  If chasing after 100% is not your thing, then I could see this game not lasting as long. But as far as I'm concerned, thats just playing half the game. Besides that, the music is great and relaxing and the 3D is really helpful to me (especially with the jet pack). I play this at night in bed and it's the perfect wind down game (when your not freaking out trying to get that perfect landing with your hang glider to achieve a red star).

Ridge Racer 3D
I haven't played a Ridge Racer game seriously since Type 4, so any rehashed tracks or music are all new to me. The game plays fantastically with the slide pad and 3D really adds to the immersion and speed of the game (during one race, a helicopter flew into the screen and surprised a "whoa" outta me). The game is stuffed with content. I've been playing for a couple hours and have only gotten through 6% of the Grand Prix mode. You earn credits to buy new cars and kits, and the challenge is just right. I love arcade racers. The last racer that I had this much fun in was Burnout Paradise. Not the same type of game mind you, but definitely a lot of fun. Graphically, I'm fine with it. It's not super impessive looking, but the 3D really enhances it.

Rayman 3D
I've only spent 40 minutes on the game but Holy Cow!  Now I came into this game with reeeaaallly low expectations of the port itself (Rayman 2 is a fantastic game) and having only spent $5 on it, I was ready to call it a wash if it sucked.  Man, this game is awesome! Now to put you in perspective, I only played the N64 version when it came out over a decade ago and I didn't even get halfway through THAT version.  The first thing that struck me was the soundtrack, it's soooo good! And the 3D is really nice in this game, it makes the environments really pop and I especially love it when there are particles floating about or butterflies scatter in the air when you run through them.  The game is really colorful and controls splendidly with the slide pad.  Platforming is not aggravating, and the camera system is limited but not very frustrating.  There is the occassional bug here and there in the form of the background music not cuing up like it's suppose to.  Many have complained about the ghosting in the cut scenes and it is present, but not a deal breaker for me.  For those who have played this game ad nauseum, they can probably skip it or wait till it drops in price because it's the same game.  But for those who've never played Rayman 2 before, this game is certainly worth the full price of admission.

None of these games are system sellers or killer apps, but they are all really solid, and more importantly, fun!

I would add impressions about Street Fighter, but I feel like that's a more known quantity and it's been covered by everyone.  Anyway, I wanna know what other people think about their purchases.

I have Pilotwings and Rayman and like them both.  The ghosting during the cutscene in Rayman is pretty annoying and there are some audio issues, but other than that I like it.  It seems like the game was made for 3D all along, it's just a perfect fit.  Pilotwings is also very fun, though I still wish there were more areas.

I've got 5 launch games, but I've only really played PilotWings, not because the others aren't good but because I'm so addicted to PilotWings. I'm in the opposite situation as Razorkid in that the vast majority o the 4-5 hours I've spent with the game so far have been in free flight. I've got 67 of the 75 collectables, and am racking my brain trying to figure out where the last 8 may be. I've only played a few of the missions past the tutorials, but I've really enjoyed them. I'm really glad I picked up this game!

Since all I played was Samurai Warriors (and a bit of Face Raiders but that's not really a portable game) I can't really make any decisions here but I'm really enjoying the game (previous DW games bored me to tears).

Pilotwings Resort is a really great game and I feel like it will be looked back on fondly in a 3DS top 25 perspective years from now. Honestly, the 3DS launch line up is really good, not exceptional, but good. The only thing it lacks, imo, is a cross demographic blockbuster like a Mario game or some such that can be recommended to anybody with a 3DS. As it is, I've not regreted any of my purchases which makes me happy :).

So far I've been playing BaM and Rayman. The former's fun in short bursts, and I'm getting used to the latter. Has anyone else had Rayman crash on them once or twice?

Thanks for this thread and everyone who's contributed to it, its really got me thinking of picking up Pilotwings and Rayman this weekend.  Quick FYI, TrU is still having that buy one get one half off deal till 4/2.

As for me, I've only purchased Street Fighter and Ghost Recon.  I'll give very breef impressions of the 2 for different reasons.

Street Fighter 4 doesn't need much introduction or impressions lol.  It is what it is, a nearly perfect port of Street Fighter 4.  I would say the only issue I have with it is that its a little hard to use the small 3DS button layout with this game and the fact that I'm not as good a fighter as I remember myself to be lol.

As for Ghost Recon, if anyone wants some more detailed impressions by me, I would recommend you to read the thread dedicated to the game.  My overal impressions are that it could be the deapest launch game for the 3DS.  It is a great game for those that love srpgs but if that isn't your cup of tea, it isn't going to change your mind on the genre.  Its definitely not your pick up and play game as some missons can last over an hour (but you do get a save anywhere feature which is nice).  I'm not sure how far I'm into the game but it has really opened up and become really difficult, but not brutal, on the medium difficulty setting.  All in all, a rock solid purchase and one I don't regret.  This game could become a hidden gem in time.

Man, I've spent about an equal amount of time split between Pilotwings, Rayman 3D, and Ridge Racer 3D (between 3-4 hours on each game).  Whatever the launch lineup lacks in pizazz more than makes up for it in variety and in how well these games compliment one another.  Ridge Racer is my new podcast game (tune in on my iPhone and drop the volume down on the game and I'm in the zone!).  This has to be the definitive version of Rayman to own and play, especially for the first time.  The 3D really adds to the immersion of the worlds and makes it easier to ignore the age of it's graphics to better enjoy the experience.  Finally as I have stated before, Pilotwings has been such a perfect wind down game when I'm laying in bed and my wife is playing her Cafe world game on Facebook.  Also, playing in the dark really enhances the 3D in that game which may help a lot of people who have trouble with the slider cranked up.

I wonder if anyone on our boards bought Super Monkey Ball or Steel Diver.  I have Steel Diver, but I've been too much into my other games to check it out just yet.  More impressions!

I am really loving Pilotwings Resort. It has a decent amount of challenge but its not impossible and the controls are perfectly responsive. The 3D is excellent and I like the graphics and music. I also love all the little Nintendo polish touches. The presentation aspects are numerous and they are so subtle that sometimes you hardly notice just how good they are until you pick up a non-Nintendo game...

...like Street Fighter. It has a wicked amount of customizations but you are definitely on your own figuring them out. It just throws you in to menus and let's you fiddle. I wish it provided you the option of being led through some of its myriad choices (like Pilotwings does). Would it be so bad if it asked you "would you like me to tell you about this?" But no, it just kind of barfs everything up at you at once. Oh well, it has a nice thick manual and luckily, I can read!

That's not to say I hate Street Fighter. Its fantastic. I have been jumping in to CPU battles and having at it. They are sometimes hard but experimentation is paying off slowly. Can't wait to get into an online battle for maximum personal humiliation. The 3D is again fabulous, the graphics are amazing and the music and sound effects are well suited. The touchpad combos seem to "work" most but not all of the time but when they do, it sure looks cool. My biggest complaint with the game is that I think Capcom assumed you have played the game a lot before. Its a bit uninviting for the newcomer, like me.

RazorKid, thanks for the heads up about Rayman. I had mentally dismissed this title due to a couple of awful reviews but I never played the original. I think I'll put Rayman back on my radar. Sounds good.

No problem, Hutt  ;D .  As long as you go into the experience knowing that it's over a decade old, you should enjoy yourself a lot. And to Yoshi1001, my Rayman did crash right at the intro cinema the first time I played it.  After I reset the 3DS, I haven't had any problems with the game crashing at all.

Pilotwings Resort is fun, though I really would like another game to balance out my library. Kind of torn between Street Fighter, Ridge Racer and Nintendogs (yes Nintendogs I loved the first game). Kind of leaning towards Ridge Racer since I haven't played a racing game in quite awhile and since I have street fighter for 360.

Ridge Racer is a lot of fun! The first 7 or so set of race events are pretty easy, but the challenge definitely ramps up afterwards.  It controls great, arcadey, and has wonderful 3D effects.  It's a really solid racer that is definitely packed with content.

I totally understand the need to have a companion game though. As much as I am enjoying the games I picked up, I wouldn't be playing my 3DS as often as I do if I owned only one of them at a time.

I just played Pro Evolution Soccer for the second time, and I liked it a lot better than the first. I tweaked a couple things in the menu and turned the difficulty down a notch, and I really enjoyed it, as opposed to the first time I played when I came out of it regretting the purchase. I'll still probably pick up FIFA in the fall, though, mostly because Pro Evo on 3DS doesn't even have generic representations of MLS and I really want to play as my Sounders.

I have SSF4 and Super Monkey Ball.

I enjoy both of them immensly.

SSF4 is like Street Fighter with Action Figures which is cool.
Super Monkey Ball I can't play in 3D because of I like the tilting controls and unlike the Wii version the difficulty ramps up in a linear instead a sinal way.

Oh yes, Pilotwings is my favorite so far, I play it far more the SS4 or Steel Diver.  It's incredibly addictive, even for me, and I'm totally not one of those completion or trophy whores ladies of the night.  But I think the fact that if you don't get 3 stars on a mission, you look at the score breakdown and know exactly why (and I mean EXACTLY) you didn't get them, how you can improve, and you can restart the mission instantly, no noticeable load time, and the missions themselves are just 2 or 3 minutes long.  It's really got a vicious (in a good, crack dealer way) cycle of instant gratification and feeling of accomplishment going on.  On some missions, I must have tried them 20 to 30 times, but it never felt like a chore, not for a minute.

Though, is it me, or is Steel Diver absolutely freaking beautiful with the 3D turned on?  Good god, talk about scenery porn.

I'm getting more and more into Pro Evolution Soccer. At this point, it's easily my second-favorite launch game ahead of Ridge Racer and Madden, though I haven't started Ghost Recon yet.

I've gotta say, as far as mindless fun while watching/listening to something else, Ridge Racer is THE game.  I've logged in over 8 hours and only completed 35% of the grand prix mode!

Also, I absolutely love the activity log.  As a guy who's hooked on metrics and use to looking at my time played on Steam, I am so happy that Nintendo has implemented this little app.  I alsways check it at the end of the day to see my who's earning more of my time as well as how many miles I walked with my 3DS.

And Pro Evolution Soccer has finally worn out its welcome. The main issue is the uneven difficulty, where on one setting I dominate the CPU opponents by three or more goals, while the next highest setting reverses that, so I'm the one being blown out.

So, I am on the Silver missions in Pilotwings Resort and many are now to difficult for me to complete with two stars, let alone three.
I am somewhat disappointed by this, I must say.

I've completed all of the Missions in Pilotwings Resort up to the Diamond level. Will finish those up soon.

I would say Super Street Fighter IV is my favorite launch game. Played over 12 hours of it and have completed Arcade Mode with about a third of the roster. It's just as good as the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, in my opinion.

I did rent Madden NFL Football for a bit from GameFly. It's Madden, that's really all I can say. It was alright.
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

I have the following games at the moment. Ridge Racer, Steel Diver, Pilotwings, and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. I recently traded Street Fighter into Amazon.com so after it's purchase and I was only out around $10 which I'll look at as a rental considering game rents in my area for a week are around $5 and two weeks is about as long as I've had the game. It was my least favorite game out of my line up to be honest. I don't think I have the patience to "get good" at a fighter. It's part of why I don't have many on my consoles outside of Smash Bros. Brawl and that's different enough from other fighters. It's easier to get into I've found.

Of the remaining four (last two due to credits from Amazon.com :) ) I've put the most time into Ghost Recon. Already almost done with chapter 2 and I'm enjoying for the most part. It looks better then I thought. As others have suggested it actually starting a DS game was to it's advantage. It's pretty solid overall. Still surprised to see the Ubisoft logo. I guess I'm just that jaded when it comes to them. I haven't had the game locked up on me once since I started playing.

Next on my list is Ridge Racer. Love this game and it's the game when I have a few minutes at work I will actually do a race or two. Not events but the race creation option based on time I have free. I've actually played this more but the Ghost Recon sessions are longer due to how missions are set up.

Steel Diver I really enjoy but I need to be in the mood to play it. Not because I dislike it or anything but I'm rarely relaxed enough to really enjoy. Especially this week where I've been sick and still pushing myself to go to work. The game can frustrate me at times so I like to be extra calm to counter-balance that.

Pilotwings Resort just came a few days ago. I haven't had time to play it much but I have down the first four training missions (plane and rocket belt). Three stars on them, perfect on the first plane that I got during the first try. :) The second rocket belt had me attempting it a few times. For some reason I had the desire to really nail the landing as I kept missing it. The game so far it's relaxing. Did the free flight mode once. I didn't and still don't know what to expect from the game since it's the very first Pilotwings game I've ever played. Yup didn't play the SNES or the N64 releases.
