Best 3DS accessories
« on: March 29, 2011, 11:24:51 AM »
Hey all,

I know it may still be early, but I suppose that's even more the reason to nip this issue in the butt.  There's always a period of time shortly after a console launch that companies put out ridiculous accessories and cases for the system.  While there are some good ones out there, it usually takes a bit of time for people to learn by trial and error.   I'm hoping this thread can help share wisdom in that respect.

I bought two cases because one came with a car charger and screen protectors while the other was more of the style I wanted:

--3DS microsuede touch pak: http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/accessories/3ds-microsuede-touch-pak/89893
--3DS explorer starter kit: http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/accessories/3ds-explorer-starter-kit/89897?ref=recpdp&cross=800713

The microsuede one was the one I got for myself.  The explorer pak I intended on giving to a friend since I only wanted the extras in it, which you can buy separately in fact, but it made a good opportunity for investigating and comparing these two cases.

The Explorer pak is your boyscout kind of case.  It has room for accessories like chargers and headphones as a mesh pocket.  It has a flap for holding games (three) and the other half of the shell is for holding the 3DS, embraced by two elastic bands.  The outside of it has a cool carbon fiber style too it and, on first glance, comes off as secure and withstanding of impacts.  When my friend tried to put his 3DS in it though, he ran into the typical reason why I avoid these kind of cases:  The 3DS fits, but with a little effort to put in and take out.  The elastic can be cumbersome and given the hard exterior, the case doesn't give much, forcing you to duke it out with the bands.  Still, this may just be part of the breaking in time with the case and may get easier as you go.  It also has a zipper to close the case, so splashes and whatnot are less likely to get to your stuff.  Of course, once this zipper goes, you'll be shopping for a new one.   The system comes with ear buds (which suck), two spare styluses, screen protectors, cloth, and car adapter.

The microsuede pak was the one I opted for.  I'm constantly commuting to my two jobs, so I needed something minimalistic but not at the expense of utility.  The pak itself has a nice feel and looks great.  It has the bare essentials, three game pockets and a pocket for the 3ds, which all items fit into well.   The integrity of the pak is still pretty stiff and secure.  The two down sides I've noticed are that the system is still exposed on the sides with just a band of microsuede about half the width of the system and that there isn't a way to charge the system with the case closed (this is true for the explorer pack as well).  The pack comes with two fat pen-like styluses which are nice, but won't fit into the case.  I try to keep one around in my bag, using the in-system one only for quick or backup uses.  If you get this pack, you might as well pay another ten bucks for the screen protector pack, which comes with extra styluses, a cloth, two individual game cases, and screen protectors.  with that you'll still be paying five bucks less than the explorer pack, you just won't have a car charger.

Overall, if you plan on carry around the system like in a back pack or messenger bag, the microsuede is a nice approachable case.  The explorer pack is definitely for someone who's going on a trip or needs a more robust case to withstand being packed in luggage.

I know there are a lot of other cases, especially given the fact that the system is the same size as the DS lite.  Feel free to add to this post with your recommendations and input on products.  If we can save someone a little bit of money to avoid a bad accessory, this is well worth it.

Thanks for reading.

I personally picked up the Pull & Go Folio (It was featured here on NWR http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/25836).

I really like the compact feel of the case as a whole as I can put it in my backpack without trying to squeeze it in amongst my other stuff. It holds 29 games and has a spot to put extra styli and a net compartment to hold an extra plug and headphones.  The best part about it imo is the little case that you actually put your 3DS in.  It's snug, holds 2 games and is detachable.  It's just small enough to fit into my back pocket without being ridiculously bulky.

My only gripes, or rather, my only wish was that they included a separate sleeve to hold my AR cards.  As it is now, I simply slide the card packet behind the 3DS in the pouch.  I definitely recommend it.

Razor, if you have an android phone, there is an app for the AR cards which provides you with all the AR cars on you phone.  This would help in not having to carry the cards around everywhere you go.  I'm not sure if this is available on the Iphone but your in luck if you have one of the many android phones.

Since this is about accessories, has anyone bought the Nyko battery that supposed to double the playtime of the 3ds?  I've been wondering if that is any good or if I should wait till others are available.

Yeah I heard about that app Manny, but unfortunately (at least for this anyway :) )  I have an iPhone. I hope some intrepid programmer creates one as it is a both brilliant and convenient.

As far as the battery pack is concerned, I'd wait till at least the summer to see if any other options come to surface. I can't vouch for the quality of the battery pack, but it's always better to have options when buying accessories.

Well you can always do it the old fashioned way and scan the cards into your computer, save them into a jpg and transfer them to your Iphone lol.

My friend got the pull and go.  I guess I can't find myself carrying around that many games.  I have some small game folders that gamestop sold for a bit that were really nice and held 6 games and two styluses. *shrugs*  I hope I don't get stricken with ADD and need more than 3 games with me on the go :)

Yeah, I was going to recommend the AR app as well.  What's nice is that it works in low light situations.

I'm weary about the nyko battery pack.  The increase on lifetime is cool, but I wonder how much bulk it adds to the system.

I'm curiuos about others impressions on the real time usage of the Nyko battery pack. Thankfully for now, I've not had any battery issues outside the first time I played my 3DS (it was half charged out the box and I was testing everything). Otherwise, whenever I get home, I slap it on the cradle by my bed. It's been in sleep mode since day 1, I've never powered it down.

Don't get the Nyko pack.  Hopefully in ~month there'll be news of a far better solution for your 3DS battery woes.

As for the Android App - it's neat.  My only issue with it is that the glare off the glossy phone seems to disrupt the 3DS's ability to "see" the card quite a bit.  Still, rather neat.  Since the ? card is the only one that really matters, I say just get that tattoo'd onto your leg.

*looks at the AR card tattoo'd on his butt* Yeah, leg would've been a better idea... darn

It'd be interesting to have AR items as stickers on another person's 3DS.  You could make a tag laser tag game with it.

The cradle is nice, but I feel like I need to get a few more for the various locations I usually find myself, like work or school.  It'd feel kinda cool to just walk in to any of these places with a cradle ready to go.

Has anyone found a shell for the system?  that glossiness is a fingerprint magnet.

I haven't seen any shells available for the system (probably because of the cradle), but I find that wiping the system clean with a microfiber cloth is a lot easier than with like the DS Lite. The outside of mine has stayed relatively fingerprint free on its own, I only have trouble with the inside, it's a magnet for lint and cat hair.
I like your extra cradle suggestion! I want a second for my office as well (the first on a nightstand next to my bed). It's just really convenient.

There's also a really interesting SD card that I use with my digital camera.  It's called an Eye-Fi card.  They're essentially SD cards with a wireless antennae in them.  Why?  You can sync this card up with your home wireless network and have it upload your pictures without ever having to remove the card.  Given that most users would already have their 3DS on standby, the system will always be eager to dump off its pics once you get within range of your home network.  What's cool about this card is that it also has a storage management system.  You just tell it to maintain no more than a percentage of the capacity and it'll delete all pics that have been uploaded to maintain that quota.  Seems like a good fit with the system.  You can also add multiple SSIDs to it, so if you take the time, you can have this thing manage your SD card very well.

The card is rather expensive though and there really isn't a nice way to upload stuff to the card wirelessly, but that's not really necessary at this point.  Thoughts?

That sounds absolutely fantastic! I don't have a multi e-reader device hooked attached to my computer. I use a usb dongle adapter to read SD cards. It's not a horrible solution, but it's pretty cumbersome. To be able to wirelessly transfer photos and such to my comp would streamline the process wonderfully. I have to look this up!

Have you tested it with your 3DS? What capacity do you have?

A review is up for Nyko's Power Pak for the 3ds and so far it seems to live up to its claims.  Ars Technica seems to have reached 5 hrs 40 some minutes with full brightness, max 3d, max volume, power save mode off and wifi on.  Thats some good numbers there.  Only problem I see is that the battery pack adds what seems to be another half inch of bulk to the bottom half of the system which could turn some people off.  Also, does anyone know if adding this battery voids your waranty with the 3ds?  I figure that Nyko had to get a license from Nintendo to make this for the 3ds so I would hope it wouldn't void the warranty but who knows.  Anyways, here's the review with some helpfull pictures.

I was worried about that pack adding some bulk *sigh*  Can't have everything, right?  I don't think it'll void the warranty, it's no major modification to the system unless it maybe doesn't jive with the on screen battery monitor.  I suppose it'll be a good alternative when my system gets older and needs a new battery.

I do have an Eye-fi card, but I use it with my digital cam.  As far as I can tell, it is an independent system that doesn't require special software on the hardware.  I'm at work right now, but I'll check it out later tonight.  I'll get back with details.  I have an 8 GB card, so I hope it'll work.  Stay tuned.

Btw, does anyone have a recommendation for a stylus?  I used to have one that could switch to a pen or pencil as well.  I just don't like using the in-system one unless I really have to.  It's my emergency stylus... not sure what emergencies, but at least for quick access.

Tragic news... the 3ds doesn't send enough power to the SD slot to feed the radio wire for the Eye fi card... a moment of silence.

I got the 3DS Explorer starter kit for one reason and one reason only it has a car charger in it and I wanted to charge my new 3DS while  I was in church so I could fiddle with it afterwards.

Sad, but I can deal.  At least my dongle works and higher capacity SD cards are wicked cheap.

Yeah, the 8gb Eye fi cards cost like $99 anyways.  Still a cool card for digital cameras though.

Looks like another battery accessory has made the rounds, this one now claiming 3 times the battery life.  Hopefully a review of this will come in time to see if these claims hold any water.  Here's the link.

After looking at the pictures, I can't even see where the battery is.  From the pictures, this looks more like a protective cover.  Also, how can you instert games with that wierd plastic fat thats being exposed at the top?  I'm guessing you won't be able to use the cradle with this thing either from the looks of it.  40 dollars is also a steap prive to pay.  Again, lets hope for a promp review in the coming weeks but given that I've never heard of this company, I don't see any website giving this a proper run through.

The shell looks kinda cool save the stupid fin on top.   I'd like a shell that recesses the shoulder buttons.

Just so everyone knows... 2004 hyundai sonatas have a shelf right below the radio that 3DS fits even when it's in the microsuede case.  Something to keep in mind if you're car shopping and have committed to the microsuede. :)

While we talking that the 2011 insight has a place under the center part where the radio is that perfectly fits a DS or 3DS.
