Author Topic: Help from the Americans regarding pre-ordering a 3DS (Read 9330 times)

Hello all, I'm going to be stateside during the launch of the 3DS and want one asap. Is there anywahy of pre-ordering it from outside of the country? I'll be in the Orlando area. I've got the number for some GameStops over there and plan on giving them a call tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

I was tempted to try amazon but I'm only at the place I'm staying for two weeks and I don't know the area well enough to pick it up from a depo if I miss delivery. I'd rather get it from a shop. Are you in America? Do your supermarkets do pre-orders or is it first come, first serve?

BTW, In America, SuperMarkets usually refers to grocery stores that only sell food and related items.

Target, K-Mart, and Sears might still be taking preorders of some sort. They could have been overlooked by some buyers. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

I don't think Kmart does pre-orders, and I am not sure about Target or Sears either. If Target does do pre-orders, it must be recent because I know they didn't do it just a couple of years ago. Sears might be a good choice to just buy on launch day though because I don't think too many people know they still have a video game department (it's extremely small though).

Target's done pre-orders since at least GameCube era... I got the pre-order bonus for Pokemon Colloseum from them.

They didn't specify the details, but at least Kmart and Sear's online stores do preorders. They sent out a press release announcing they began taking preorders back in January. It didn't say whether it was just online or not, so I couldn't say for certain what the case may be.

Target does do preorders. You basically pay $1 for the game or system, then pay the rest off on release day.

That used to be the same with us here by now they've branched out and started offering everything from clothes to TVs.

I'm a fellow limey like our Mr Leahy. I've been to the US a few times, it's my favourite place for holidays although I've only been to the touristy places like Vegas, L.A and Orlando. If I was going just a week later I could have got a European model. Shame.

I think it should be 09:00am on the east coast in about 4 and a half hours, I'm gonna start calling around then, but what are the chances of a gamestop being willing to hold on to a 3DS for me without putting any money down or even speaking to them in person? I'm hoping that I'll speak to someone who is enchanted by my British accent, then I'll charm the pants off of them and persuade them to help me out. I'll let you know how it goes.

UPDATE:

Just called a gamestop in Florida. Spoke to a really friendly guy. He said I'd need to speak to the manager and told me to call back in a few hours but they have been able to do things like this in the past and that they could guarantee me one on launch day and that they're opening at midnight. I just hope the manager is just as helpful.

I've got a lot of time for the American's and find them to be generally very warm people. The first guy I spoke to was as helpful as he could be, and even the manager was OK. He was just unwilling to bend the rules even a little bit. Considering the circumstances, he probably could have helped me out in some way but he was just doing his job I guess.

Uh, no. Most stores won't just hold a product for you, especially when it is expected to sell out like the 3DS is. It wouldn't be fair to someone who might come in to that store and actually have money to buy the system.

Miyamoto, there are plenty of stores that will be selling the system, so there is a good chance you will be able to find one while you are here (as a last resort, you could just order it on Amazon and have them ship it back home since they do international shipping.

Also if you're from outside North America keep in mind that the system is region locked, you'll have to buy all games from the same region as the system itself.

Only the games that the publishers region lock will be region locked though. Maybe that means all of them and maybe not.

Exactly, it's like how the Xbox 360 works (where publishers can choose to region lock their games or not). I hope the small and more niche publishers do make their games region free since that might boost their sales numbers.

That's called PRE-ORDERING. I was talking about him just asking the manager to hold onto a copy (which is what he was talking about), that is something most stores don't do. That's not being rude, you are the only one that thinks it is.
