I just bought a copy of International Design Magazine-August 2001 issue.
The issue is their 47th Annual Design Review. The winner for the consumer products category was the Mac G4 Cube.

Do you think Nintendo was inspired from the G4 Cube's Design? All I can say its fabulous! Injection Molded plastic with platinum case inside! Now that's SWEET!

When I was poking fun at Xbox's PC like abilities on my last post I didn't mean that a hard drive for consoles is wrong or bad. It was just an example ad that Nintendo could use to play dirty with Microsoft. But really if you look at it the Xbox is a PC! Have you ever heard of a console that can run Linux? What's worse is it can be run on Microsoft's system. Isn't that curious?

I'll say this now before anybody else, Nintendo's next console would probably still don't have DVD playback. Will it be backward compatible? I can't say but probably not.

What I do know is they'll probably make it more portable....imagine.

Yeah its done leagally through some exploit of a game save for certain games. But more easily done illeagally with a mod chip. But then again being able to run linux would be considered an advantage to it.

Oh hello! I'm new. Just like Mr. Willow over here, I'm a grad of Industrial Design. GameCube is... compact and light. I have no complaints about the design. (Everyone has taste, I think. What matters is if it's good or bad ) The controller is ergonomically correct for every user of any race.
Some of the folks here in my school joke around with the 80's-ism of PS2's look and the fact that you have to reboot twice to play a game is sad.
I already have a DVD player that is far more superior than the PS2's so my PS2's just for games or the soda cans. Besides, why would I favor a system which has a DVD player but has an inferior hardware? You can't shoot me for that comment. There are just too many limitations for game devlopers in the PS2. Neverhteless, it has exclusive games that I HAVE to play so  bought it.
I bought a GC because it was made by Nintendo and knowing Nintendo I'm not gonna see any of their games in other consoles soon so it's necessary for a gamer like me to buy it.

-->> If you're willing to shell out $300 more or less for a console with a DVD player, why not get a 'Q'? <<---

Doesn't the PS2 and Dreamcast also run Linux?

I think they should advertise a pink gamecube......then it'll really sell. Purple was too masculine of a color....I think little girls are more into pink.

I love the GC. And I see no problem with the design. The style matches the name. It's compactness (it takes up about the same space as a 64 controller with a rumble pack) and simplicity makes it great for me to take over to my friend's house (a PS2 owner) to play on his 52" HDTV , and it fits into my crowded TV cabinet. The 4 controllers are awesome at parties.
Finally, I don't think the DVD will not be much of a selling point in the future. Anyone who owns a PS2 now will not be buying a PS3 or
GC SP for the DVD player.

Ahahaha. Don't forget the z-button boot sound. They would have to make that the default.

I totally agree with you on this one.  All points you brought up it home.
The thinhg that gets me is the whole dispute over the three main systems, PS2/XBOX/GC.

The fact of the matter is there should not be any dispute because the one true game console is GC.  There are great games on PS2/XBOX but they lose focus when it comes down to the games. You know exactly what your talking about and I am backing you up.

The DVD-playback is really only useful to the teenagers who own one, but can't afford a DVD-player.  It would be useful to have a US version of the Q, but probably wouldn't really boost sales.  I love how the GCN looks, it looks like a video game system, not a VCR, not some futuristic piece of electronics.  It looks like it was made to play my video games for many years.  The handle is just a great little addition, I have used that thing to many times.  If they just re-work the Q and release it, I won't buy it, but some people might.  Nintendo knows what it is doing much more so than I do, but I would rather see them work on more games myself...

Jainmb925: who you backin' up mate?
Topics of replies don't show up in this forum. Anyway, I think you're right about PS2 and XBOX losing focus what with the hype over ONLINE gaming. I'm sick of it. I'm a truly selfish gamer who doesn't even like playing multiplayer games at home and they're going to shove this online crap (that's probably just another stunt to extort more money from financially strained gamers) in my face.
I'm just glad Nintendo's got their priorities straight. They're not exploiting the macho factor that hooked many shallow gamers.
But I'll contradict myself. I have no qualms about Nintendo making games like Animal Crossing and Pokemon online. That way it'll be like interacting with real people in a town. Responses will be different and unpredictable. How cute! How greatly it will be appreciated by a queer like me!
But when it comes to war games that just involve boosting one's ego by mauling other players whose faces you can't even see... I think I'll pass and just play the highest difficulty level of Soul Calibur 2 or Virtua Fighter 4.

Obviously none of us here has problem with the GC's design. I assume everyone in the forum owns a GC. I don't mind the design it grew on me, although despise the indigo color but I had a choice of not getting a GC at launch or getting an indigo GC. I wasn't passing up on Nintendo goodness over the color of the console. Most gamers obviously did. I think a GameCube SP would be a good idea. If Nintendo is gonna pass MS and the X-box they are going to need to attract mainstream gamers....sorry guys. While I don't care for the moronic mainstream gamer, 3rd parties do and those are the gamers bank rolling Sony and MS.

A slickly redesigned Gamecube would go along way to boost Nintendo's image with mature gamers. Just look at the GBA SP, the media buzz is how much sophisticated it looks and how it will help with sales to older gamers. The GBA SP has the exact same library as the GBA but because they changed the design and are pushing the platinum color SP instead of the indigo colored GBA the perception of the GBA has changed. While it would take a little bit more work with the GC, a redesign and a ad campaign would at the very least get the GC similar coverage to the GBA SP. Then Nintendo could whip out a nice ad campaign and throw in a free Eternal Darkness as way of really driving the point of a mature them home.

A lot of the editors at the GCAdvanced site had good ideas. Like releasing a redesigned platinum colored GC SP with a built in broadband adapter and a LCD screen for LAN play. I don't know how feasible it is for a cost stand point. If Nintendo could keep the MSRP of the GC SP at $149.99, drop the classic GC to $99.99 it might just work out. It would all depend on the cost of the screen though. Get a decent ad campaign and it could a long way to changing Nintendo's image and setting up the GC's successor for a run at 1st place.

Again, I don't see the point of redesigning the console because it's really great as it is. The Platnium GC seems to be rather popular. But I like the ideas of adding the LCD screen orbroadband adaptor.

As a matter of fact, I think it would really cool if Nintendo put together a special LAN play package with the screen, adaptor, and maybe a wavebird just in time for Mario Kart. I don't know what the price point would be then, but if Nintendo was looking at this as a serious plan for gaining marketshare, then taking a slight loss would be logical. The added benefit of this package is the potential for expanding the GC's online ready userbase. More 3rd parties might be incline to jump in on their own, and we may Nintendo offering more support in that arena if the interest seems significant. The bottom line though is that a package like this would give the appearance of the GC having a lot more value without having to waste a lot of money on a redesign that might go against the fundemental design philosophy that originally laid behind the GC. All that there would be left to do is to reintroduce the GC as the first poster suggested,  while at the same time phasing out the Indigo color which made the system more laughable than hip.
