AT&T Hotspots to Be Accessible by 3DS Owners
« on: March 02, 2011, 12:58:08 PM »

Wi-Fi access will be available across the US.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25555

Following a system update in late May, over 10,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots will be accessible to Nintendo 3DS owners nationwide across the US.

Players will be able to access Wi-Fi features for SpotPass content delivery and eShop connectivity in restaurants, book stores, airports, and more.

I don't think I understand. Will the 3DS be picking up some kind of WiFi signal from the cell phone towers?

TurdFurgy, I think it will be like using a wireless router in your house or any other place that has open wi-fi (like libraries).

There are businesses around the country like Starbucks, and McDonalds(?) that use AT&T to provide WiFi to their customers, but in some cases you have to be an AT&T subscriber. Nintendo worked out a deal (presumably an ad-based deal) that allows any 3DS user to access these networks. Also, in NYC and other major metropolitan areas AT&T has WiFi hotspots in parks, bus terminals, and other places where masses of people regularly gather, so this is a very good thing.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

I'm pumped for this! These hotspots are really common, especially in more populated areas. I've run into them a lot. This is exactly the kind of thing Nintendo needed to do to make me want to bring my 3DS with me places. Hopefully it results in a better interface for these online features like the eShop and more expansive firmware updates.
Itsa me! Yankee!
