Kirby Wii & Pandora's Tower

Nintendo had an investors meeting today which brought up a few interesting things.
The first two being 2 new games.

1. Pandora's Tower: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/sx3j/index.html

That is all that is known about it at this time other than it will be out in the 1st half of 2011 and is rated Cero C.

2. Kirby Wii: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/library/events/110128/07.html
Direct Link: Larger Video
Which looks like it may be the Kirby game that has been on the release list since back in the GC days.
And it's being made by HAL Laboratories.

Personally, it sounds like Nintendo's kind of desperate for Wii software if they're resorting to reviving an aborted GameCube Kirby game to fill in the schedule.  Pandora's Tower sounds promising, though.

On the upside, if Nintendo's doing stuff like this, maybe it'll push them to bring over Xenoblade and Last Story.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

Supposedly Nintendo has said that they have lots of software to release this year (I'm assuming he meant for Wii & 3/DS).

He even went so far as to say that there are lots of completed 3DS games (I'm assuming OoT, SF3D, and just about everything else Nintendo has shown so far) that they are holding back so that 3rd Parties can have more attention during the launch window.

& Monado, aka Xenoblade, is still on their release list.

That Kirby game looks pretty good... except it just seems so generic and uninteresting compared to Epic Yarn.  They needed to release those in the opposite order.  Plus I never thought I would say it but I'm actually getting tired of side-scrollers on the Wii.  I want some full 3D platformers as well to balance things out.  This is supposed to be the future of gaming but they keep having us use NES-style controls in gameplay that was popular 15 years ago.

Can't say much about Pandora's Tower since that doesn't give me any idea about the gameplay BUT it sure as hell ain't no casual focused non-game.  They wouldn't have that kind of art direction for anything but a core game.  So thumbs up there.

more info from the google translated transcript pf the meeting;

It implies that Nintendo might have something planned for the 25th Anniversary of Zelda which happens to be this year, just as the 25th Anniversary of Mario was last year. It's also the 25th Anniversary of Dragon Quest, so maybe that gets released this year too.

YES! It will probably be a port of the Zelda Collection Ports with no changes except for packaging.

I don't see them implying anything in that, they are just noting notable anniversaries (which they love to do). I would like to see a collection though.

By them mentioning that Mario 25th Anniversary was released last year in the same breath as mentioning that it is Zelda 25th this year is all the implication I need that they "might" be planning something.

Not to mention that it's also DQ 25th anniversary this year and we are still waiting on DQX for Wii.... so I'll just go ahead and let you put those lil bits of info together on your own.

My guess for Zelda's 25th Anniversary they take the Zelda: Collector's Edition on the Gamecube and add A Link to the Past to it.  Maybe if they're nice they'll also include Ocarina of Time: Master Quest.

I'm guessing that 2011 will be a year of Zelda capped off with Skyward Sword at the end of the year.
Ocarina probably isn't the only 3Dmake they have planned.

LttP is probably one of the first 3D classics to be released and maybe Wind Waker gets a 3Dmake after OoT with a few extra dungeons or water quest that got left out of the original.

Or they could just release an updated Collectors Edition of like Ian said.

Wow, we go from Nintendo censoring any religious references in games to quoting the book of Job in promo images. My 9-year old self's head would be exploding right now.

It was Nintendo of America that censored games, the Japanese versions would have religious references. Who knows if NOA will do the same thing with this.

It wasn't exactly a promo pic, it was actually dug out of the flash content from the teaser site. I'm not sure we were supposed to see it yet or even ever.

...

Fine by me. I have been wanting that title since the Gamecube screenshots were shown. It looks like they threw out the creature stacking, though.

There's not enough of Pandora's Tower to say much, but is that Mamiko Noto I hear on the Japanese site? Yay if it is even though a dual-audio release from Nintendo is probably out of the question.

It's from deviant-art, so it's definitely shopped, but if Nintendo uses that boxart for OoT3D, then I just might be tempted to purchase it again.

I recently realized something... Kirby is one of a few Nintendo franchises that hasn't ever had a 3D entry. We've seen Mario, Donkey Kong,  Zelda, etc. make a move to 3D, but Kirby has always been a side-scroller, even in Kirby 64 which had 3D graphics. As much as I enjoy side-scrolling platformers and am glad they've had a resurgence on Wii, it's getting to the point where there are now too many. It's a shame that the Super Mario Galaxy games are about the only notable 3D platformers on the system.

That Kirby game looks pretty good... except it just seems so generic and uninteresting compared to Epic Yarn.  They needed to release those in the opposite order.
I don't understand that reasoning. Because Kirby's Epic Yarn has a different visual style than the norm for the series, it should have been released after a regular series entry? Kirby's Epic Yarn also has many gameplay differences from the typical Kirby platformer, so it's best treated as a spin-off than a mainline entry in the series. Besides, Super Mario Galaxy has better art direction than New Super Mario Brothers Wii, and that didn't stop NSMBWii from outselling SMG. Different styles of games within the same series can co-exist.

Kirby's Epic Yarn sure did look nice, but it was hardly a Kirby game. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I wish Nintendo would use these radical art departures (i.e. Epic Yarn, The Wind Waker) and just make completely new IPs without the confines and expectations of the series the art styles end up assigned to. This new Kirby game looks great.

I'm curious to hear more info on Pandora's Tower. The character design looks anime-ish. I'm digging the music.

Unfortunately, it would seem few consumers are willing to take chances on new IPs, so it's a bit of a double-edge sword: Do they make radical changes to an existing franchise game with the risk of alienating its fanbase, or do they create a new IP which might not sell very well because it isn't familiar to anyone?

Well at one point Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, Kirby, Donkey Kong were all new IP.  It has to start somewhere.  If you just stick with the same thing the whole time eventually the buying public might get sick of it.  Nintendo is way too conservative in this regard.  New IP is actually not all that uncommon.  A lot of publishers introduce new IP each generation.  Some of it bombs and some of it becomes a new hit series.  Hell, Nintendo could have made Wii Sports a Mario game very easily but now they have a new series to make sequels to.

Though in this particular case using a new IP for Epic Yarn might has resulted in accustations of ripping off LittleBigPlanet (a new IP by the way).

At that point, gaming itself was relatively new. There weren't really any long-established franchises back in those days so people would try out anything that looked good. I'm not so sure that's the case anymore. Nintendo may have had a hit with the Wii series, but that's because of the Miis, which are basically putting yourself into a videogame, a concept that has mass appeal. Nintendogs and Brain Age also hit it big. However, many of Nintendo's other recent IPs haven't had as much success as their previously created ones, such as Pikmin, Sin and Punishment, Geist, Chibi-Robo, Starfy, Endless Ocean, and a slew of Japan-only releases that will probably never be released elsewhere. Considering how hit-and-miss new IPs can be, I'm not surprised Nintendo sticks with franchises they know will sell hugely.
