Super Meat Boy WiiWare Delayed
« on: November 01, 2010, 01:09:42 PM »

The two-man development team is having trouble compressing the game under the WiiWare limit.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24381

Super Meat Boy developer Team Meat announced via Twitter that their game isn't coming to WiiWare in November like originally planned due to the fact that it is currently too big for Nintendo's download service.

The tweet read: "attention internets, the wii version is NOT coming out in Nov its impossible. we havent even gotten the size down under 50mb yet (goal=39mb)"

The Xbox Live Arcade version came out last week and has been getting rave reviews. The file size for that version is around 90MB. The WiiWare file size limit is around 40MB.

The XBLA version also features an exclusive world, called Teh Internets, where new levels will be added by the game's creators. The PC version is still supposed to come out soon.

What's harder than Super Meat Boy?
Fitting Super Meat Boy on WiiWare.

I wish they could make it episodic so that we don't lose out on content.

If technically possible, Nintendo should issue a waiver for these guys. Super Meat Boy is the leading candidate for my Game of the Year. I think old-school Mario fans will dig it so much. If you thought New Super Mario Bros. Wii was too easy... this is the game for you.

Yea, I finally picked it up after hemming and hawing for almost a week after Jonny raved about it to the staff the other day. I spent somewhere around 7 hours with it last night with a friend of mine. It's easily the game that I hate the most, but I also really enjoy the challenge. It's excellent.

Good luck, Team Meat. Here's hoping they can fit it in without having to sacrifice too much. I've completed the original Meat Boy on Newgrounds, and am psyched for the sequel after its universal acclaim.

I believe it might be related to the system's RAM, it seems to download games fully before writing them to the storage so the whole thing has to fit into the RAM alongside the Shop Channel.

Except Nintendo didn't put enough power into the WiiWii for that to happen. 3DS appears to solve this problem, hopefully.

Is RAM not a part of power? If it's true the limit is due to the RAM (which seems like the most plausible theory I've heard) then having more RAM would have increased the small WiiWare file limit (seriously, my 11-year-old PC has more than four times the Wii).

Nintendo, bring on the Wii 2 because I am tired of missing out on good games because of the Wii's damn file size limit. These include: Scott Pilgrim vs the World, TMNT re-shelled, Marvel vs Capcom 3, just to name a few.

I remember reading somewhere that developers can submit a file size exception with Nintendo to go above the 40MB limit.

If it's simply due to loading the whole thing into memory then that's easily worked around, regardless of size (otherwise, how could Wii discs possibly work?)

Wii discs work because the game's on the disc? I'm not following you. Where is that game going to go if not into the RAM?

The Wii has to store things in RAM off of the disc for the game to actually function, in this case, the flash memory is the equivalent of the Wii disc.

I agree about Super Meat Boy, I just purchased it today and it is fantastic. Anyone enjoying this should check out N+ if you haven't already.

This is before the game gets to the flash memory. Supposedly it downloads into the RAM and then it writes to the flash, which is why the service has a 40MB limit. If this is true, how could this be worked around?

Isn't that dangerous? It seems like it would make it more vulnerable having it take so long writing data like that, I'd be worried about something interrupting it and corrupting the flash.

You can't corrupt Flash like that.  These things have checksums -- if the written data isn't valid, you do it again.

Ah. I'd still be worried about the increased wear from the longer writing times. Flash isn't very durable in my experience.

I don't think the issue is a technical one, or maybe it is, in the same way that the Wii's generally shoddy internet integration is a technical issue.

How could Nintendo use the SD card to work around file size limitations?
