Anyone else here a fan of the Mortal Kombat series?
With the arrival of the Mortal Kombat reboot next year I thought I would make a thread about it and my history with the series.
I have been a fan of this since I was in Kindergarden. (Scary isn't it?
) The first time I was introduced to this series was by my neighbor. We were pretending to play it outside. I was Kung Lao, my brother was Scorpion, my neighbor was Shang Tsung, and his two sisters (who me and my brother were good friends with at the time) were Kitana and Mileena. I actually had a lot of fun because the fighting had reminded me of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers which I was obsessed with at the time. Then when my Dad got me and my brother a Super Nintendo one of the first games he had gotten us was MKII. That is when I became a huge fan. Later I rented the first Mortal Kombat for the SNES and loved that game just as much as MKII. I also remember going to see the first Toy Story in theaters and before we went in to the movie I saw a Mortal Kombat arcade machine and I wanted to play it so badly that I almost ran to it and gave it a huge hug. But my mom didn't let me because we were there to see Toy Story and not play games, so I was a little sad. But hey the movie was awesome. MK1 was the very first game I had ever beaten. So yeah I was extremely happy.
Then I heard the news of Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat The Movie (which I never got to see in theaters
) I was very excited that not only was there a new game but a movie of one of my favorite games! I remember before the movie came out me and my brother had gotten preview magazines and MK action figures. Too bad I liked to cut the characters out and play with them. Needless to say I had ruined those magazines, but not only them but strategy guides, comic books, and instruction booklets. I was a collector's worst nightmare!
Then the Christmas of 1995 arrived and I had gotten the Power Ranger Ninja Megazord along with the Falconzord, the usual shirts, socks, and undies (Tee Hee I said undies!
), and low and behold there it was in all it's glory Mortal Kombat 3! Well my brother and dad played it first and for some reason I wanted to play MK1 instead. (What was wrong with me!) But I eventually played it and that game was totally super special awesome! My favorite character at that time was Sheeva because I had really liked Goro and Kintaro and she was the closest I would get to play as them. So I thought at the time. I played that game for hours any chance I could get. But sadly I put it on the easiest difficulty and still could not get past the first couple of guys. That game was so insanley cheap that it would make Mao Zedong cry! Sometimes I managed to get to Motaro or even Shao Kahn. (if the planets managed to be aligned that day) But when I did reach them I was shaking so badly and slightest bit of noise would piss me off, and then I lost to Motaro most of the time, and controllers would be thrown and many many many colorful words were said for a few more years until I beat that bloody (no pun intended) game!
Then my mom rented me a N64 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy form our local Star Video. That game became my favorite game I had ever played. Not only did it take all the characters from MK3 and UMK3 (minus the MK3 version of Sub-Zero which was combined with the Classic and became Super Mega Ultra Chicken! umm I mean Super Sub-Zero) but brought back Raiden, Baraka and a new looking Johnny Cage. Along with those characters they had all the stages from MK1-UMK3, minus a few MK1 stages and the N64 version had some unique stages that the other versions of MKT did not. Anyway, I played that game for the entire weekend and had the other neighbor kids come and see the game. I did tell them a little lie and said that the N64 was mine because I wanted to be cool but then my mom came in and she said it would have to be returned in 2 more hours, and then ruined my 2 seconds of "Wow you have an N64 your sooooo cool!". But earlier in that summer I had gone to my neighbor's house and the had Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the SNES. Which I had heard of before because I had a 2 (by then) ruined strategy guides of it, but had never actually played it. Then I played it and to me it seemed like a mini MK Trilogy game. At that time I never thought I get another system because we did not have a lot of money at that time. I remember my aunt picking me and my brother up to spend the night at her house and I was pumped because she had a playstation and I knew that Mortal Kombat Trilogy was on that system so I begged her to take me to the video store so I could rent it. She did and I was so excited to finally get to play as the bosses. (even though I played as them with an MK3 cheat at my neighbors) But when I was just really getting into it, granted 3 or 4 hours passed, my parents came to pick me and my brother up. I was a tad bit annoyed that I had to stop playing it but hey that's how life goes. I did eventually get UMK3 for the SNES which was the only game I had gotten in 1998 until Christmas.
Before I go on to the next part I wanted to put this funny/scary/sad little story of me and MK at school. In school I used to pretend to play Mortal Kombat during recess, mainly because I was kind of shy and an introvert when I was in elementary. I would also draw the characters and how they looked on the select screen and I was obsessed with putting them in the right order like in the games, especially when I was doing both versions of the MK Trilogy select screens. I also used to draw the Fatalities from the game during classes which kind of freaked out my 3rd grade teacher! So I had to give her the drawings and she called my mom and I had to see the school's guidance counselor. So he wanted me to explain what the pictures were and I told him about the game and the characters and why I liked it so much. Then he talked to my mom and said that he saw nothing wrong with the drawings. A few years later my mom told me that the teacher thought that the pics were sexually explicit because I drew boobs on the female characters. I was actually a pretty detailed drawer so I only drew what the characters looked like in the game
It is now summer of 1998 and I saw a commercial of Mortal Kombat 4 that was coming out for the consoles and needless to say I was excited because finally a brand new MK game with new characters and a 3D fighting engine was coming out. Then I had gotten an MK4 strategy guide and promised myself not to cut it up, which lasted for about a month or so. A few months later me and my my mom went to Pizza Hut and there I saw an MK4 arcade machine that was the first and last time I would ever see one and of course my mom would not let me play it. So now it's late 1998 and I find myself discovering the wonderful world of the internet and found a lot of fan sites of Mortal Kombat which only got me more excited for Christmas because I thought I was going to finally get Mortal Kombat Trilogy and an N64. However I did still get an Nintendo 64 but I had gotten MK4 instead of MK Trilogy. I was a bit dissapointed but then I played MK4 and loved it. On Christmas eve the day before my aunt did get MK Trilogy but in cruel twist of fate it was the Tiger Electronics version! I did not hate the game but it's like eating a pizza without any cheese, it's just not the same. Something funny about when I got the N64 is that I got it the very same Christmas that the N64 kid did. I'm Just sayin'. Also NINTENDO SIXTY-FOURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

But in January of 1999 my interest in the Mortal Kombat series took a nose dive because I started getting into other games. Although in late 2000 I started getting interested in the series again, and on the Christmas of that year I finally got Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the Playstation. After waiting almost 2 1/2 years (time went slow when I was a kid) I finally got the game! After that I played Mortal Kombat Mythologies Sub-Zero on the N64 for the first since I found out about it back in 1997.
Then came 2002. Which I refer to as "The Great Video Game Depression"for which you are about to read. I got my SNES back out and played the old MK games I had on it for a few weeks. After that I got the bright idea of selling my SNES and all the games and some of my N64 games, which still haunts me to this very day! I have since bought a new SNES and pretty much all the games I had plus ones I never had and the same goes for the N64 games. So in late 2002 (there seems to be a pattern here) I got interested in the MK series yet again. By that time the only MK games I had left were MK4, MKT, and that evil tiger electronics MKT game. I had heard rumors of MK5 coming out for a few years and then I saw previews for Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, of course I was excited finally a game that not only made me want to play my Gamecube more but a new MK game with even more new characters, new look, new gameplay and an interesting story was being released that holiday. So when Christmas came around I had gotten that game along with used copies of MK Trilogy and MK Mythologies for the N64. So I put the game in my Cube and I liked the game at first but after a few days I realized that this game kinda sucks. I had noticed that I did not have as much fun with it as I did the past MK games and that the fighting mechanics where stiff and slow. I know MK games are all alittle bit stiff at times but this was ridiculous. The endings where terrible and the new characters were uninteresting and bland.
When I heard about Mortal Kombat Deception coming out for the Cube I was interested in trying it out. When Deception first came out for the PS2 and Xbox I was not really interested and wanted nothing to do with it because of the bad taste Deadly Alliance left in my mouth. But when I heard that Goro and Shao Kahn were going to be exclusive characters for the Cube version I was starting to get interested in seeing more of the game. So when I first played it I was shocked that I was enjoying it more than MKDA. Since basically they both play the same gameplay and similar graphics. I found that the game felt smoother and the story to me was more interesting but only slightly more. I liked the adventure mode and found it gave the game a bit more kick. But as the same with MKDA I stopped having as much fun playing it then when I first got it. Although I still liked playing multiplayer with my cousin. Unlike the older MK games I found the single play portion to be alot less fun to play through even though MK games pretty much have the same single player game. However I was excited about Mortal Kombat Armageddon. I even pre-ordered it mainly becuase of the arcade port of UMK3 and the Extras DVD just in case the game turned out like the last two. I loved the fact that it had almost all of the characters from all the MK games in one game. (Minus Khameleon from the N64 version of MKT they later put her in the Wii version of Armageddon) I also liked the Create-A-Fighter mode, because for the first time I could finally make my own MK character even though the mode it had it's limitations. The game for the most part was like the last two but it had the feel of the 2D MK games with the uppercuts and jumping brought back. I loved the single player game and found it much more appealing than the MKDA or MKD single player. But I found my self once again only playing it for a short while than pretty much stop after that.
When Shaolin Monks and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe came out I was uninterested in even playing by the way they looked, the way the stories and characters were handled, and just the shear fact I was sick of that I got bored with the last three so quickly and pretty much gave up on ever having another enjoyable new MK game.
But then came the trailer for the reboot of Mortal Kombat. At first I was like ughhh! not a remake! After seeing the trailer and the fact the game is going to play like the 2D MK games and how disgustingly awesome the fatalities look.(Kung Lao's especially) I just hope this is as fun and as memorable as the original MK games. However, if it is not then I am finished with buying any new MK game but I think this time I will be satisfied and play this for years to come.
