Releases for Wii in 2011
« on: August 20, 2010, 04:31:23 PM »
By the end of 2010, the Wii will have given us three mainline Mario games, two Metroid games, one Zelda game, with another on the way, a Kirby game, a Donkey Kong Country game, and installments of several other successful franchises (from Animal Crossing to Wii Sports). In 2011 should we expect the next installments for Star Fox, F-Zero, Pikmin and Pilot Wings? Should we be anticipating something entirely new? Or should we perhaps brace ourselves for the prospect that Nintendo will be diverting resources away from the Wii and towards its inevitable successor and the 3DS?

I think WiiHD2.0 or whatever will be shown at E3 2011, MOVE and KINECT will sell good and that will pressure Nintendo to show its hand.

I think sequels in 2011 is the surest bet.  And 2012 and likely 2013 as well.  We won't know too far in advance though.  We won't find out about the second half of 2011 until E3 and anything in the first half that we haven't already seen will be revealed out of nowhere shortly before release.

A PilotWings is being released on 3DS so I doubt we'll see one for the Wii. I have similar doubts for StarFox, even though the one on 3DS is a remake. Though if a new game happens, I'd expect it on 3DS to follow up the remake.

Right now, I believe we know of only two games that will be published by Nintendo in 2011: The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword and Mario Sports Mix. Pikmin 3 seems pretty likely as well. Beyond that, all I could do is make blind guesses, and I don't really like to do that.

That wouldn't be a bad idea either. If Nintendo doesn't have much in the pipeline for 2011 releases because their resources are being used for future projects, they could release some games that haven't made their way outside of Japan or to the US. Xenoblade, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Captain Rainbow, Another Code come to mind. I also wouldn't mind seeing some of the New Play Control! games, such as Pikmin 2 and Chibi Robo, since I missed them on GameCube and they're not easy to find. There are probably more I'm forgetting.

If the third party wii developers were not shutting down interest for developing for the wii then I would have more optimism for wii games of 2011. After Skyward Sword releases(January 2011?) it looks to be bone dry for the wii in 2011.

Also, Miyamoto confirmed that Pikmin 3 still exists, for the Wii, and seemed to indicate that it was pretty far along. I expect it to show up next year.

Kytime, no chance of Zelda being out as early as January. MAYBE if they had given more specific info than just "2011". There are also plenty of 2011 Wii games already announced. Some of them include:
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
De Blob: The Underground
Driver: San Francisco
The Grinder
LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
Mario Sports Mix

I would also like to point out that the other systems don't have that many more announced either, not a lot of 2011 games have been announced yet.

Each of three consoles has at least one big release pegged for early 2011: Zelda: Skyward Sword on the Wii, Killzone 3 on the PS3, and Gears of War 3 on the 360. We know more about next year's lineup than I remember knowing at this point in any previous year, and that seems to be a trend.

Skyward Sword will be released in either January or February of 2011 because the game has been in development for nearly five or more years and the fans are getting restless. Secondly, Miyamoto did say that the game was going to be released in the holiday season of 2010 but they had to work out a few kinks and so the game was delayed until 2011. This would imply that the game was nearly, if not completey, done. It would take them six months from E3 of this year(june being the sixth month) to polish the game and six months from E3 would be about January or February of 2011. Third, they would want people to use their christmas gift cards and money to buy the game and right after is when people will have a whole lot of money to buy the game.

I would normally predict Zelda in March, but it seems like that's most likely going to be when the 3DS launches, so under these circumstances they're going to want to keep it far away from that, and I think pushing it back even further is more likely than a January or February release.

The game has been in development for about 3 years, not 5. Eiji Aonuma himself confirmed that Nintendo started development of Skyward Sword after Phantom Hourglass was finished, which was in June 2007. Nintendo has not given any indication of when in 2011 it will release, so "January 2011" is no more accurate or reliable than "December 2011". The most they have done is say that they are aiming for a early 2011 release, but where did you hear that the delay (which everyone knew would happen as no one seriously thought it would release this year since the only info we had before E3 was a single piece of concept art) was because of just a few kinks.

I would be willing to guess a March release is most likely, eight years since the release of The Wind Waker.

Well I imagine that Xenoblade and The Last Story will both get a North America/Europe release in 2011.  Considering both games are huge RPG's that look like they had large budgets, I'd imagine NCL has ordered NOA and NOE to release both games in order to make sure they get the most money out of them.  No way is Iwata going to fund two 50+ hour RPGs with full voice acting, orchestrated music and great graphics if they're not going to be released to the widest audience possible.

In addition to everything that's been mentioned, I believe Nintendo maintains that the Vitality Sensor is still being worked on, so I'd expect a game for that peripheral in 2011.

I can honestly say that I would like to see some more F-Zero. Another series with large gaps in its releases. I think it would be a perfect game to push the 3DS hardware.

I forgot about the Vitality Sensor. I would not be surprised at all to see it be released next year, packed in with a game. I don't think it's going to become any sort of standard accessory like how they are pushing Wii Motion Plus, it's going to be a more specialized accessory like the Balance Board (yes I know more than just Wii Fit uses it, but Nintendo has just released Wii Fit for it). So it doesn't really matter if it gets released shortly before Nintendo's next system, as I don't think they intend to do anything much with it.

I guess a lot of people forget that Wii Music also supports the Wii Balance Board (for the drums).

Other Nintendo games do too, like Punch-Out!!, but I think she meant "requires this peripheral to play" rather than "has an optional mode which supports."

Speaking of Punch Out!!, I seem to recall someone from Next Level saying that, should they be given the opportunity to do another Punch Out!!, they would include more original (new) characters. Which would lead me to believe that it was at least on the table at some point. I would love to see another Punch Out!!' before the Wii breathes its last. The people at Next Level are a talented bunch,  I'm looking forward to seeing what they've been up to. (p.s. - a Strikers sequel would also be much appreciated).
