All recovered from E3, TYP and Jonny return with awesome music in tow.

Did you like the second, third, and fourth games? Let your fellow listeners know in TalkBack! Think you've got a better choice? Then send it my way and your request might be on the next episode of Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition!  Heck, throw in a question and specific songs if you want.  Just remember, it has to be a game found on a Nintendo system in North America (unless we say otherwise)!

I'm having some technical difficulties, so I'll just post the list of games here:

Kid Icarus (NES)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
Paladin's Quest (SNES)
Hey You, Pikachu! (N64)
Bit.Trip Beat (Wii)

4. Sorry you were limited in your soundtrack choices for this one. There actually is a sound test, which I've used to extract most of the music from this game (for purposes of using it on my radio station). I actually have a strange paradoxal response to the end credits music, in that it makes me cry (a little) because when it appears in the game the player has just been forced to send Pikachu back to the wild. Of course, after the credits, Pikachu comes back to the player. Overall, the game is really cool and has some really great music. I do have to agree that it would not demo well in a loud environment like E3.

Just listened to it and I have to applaud Johnny for actually playing game 3. I pretty much did the same thing, except I was staying at a friend's place who rented it. We didn't get to the UFO ARE YOU KIDDING ME though.

I think I disagree with you guys. I never had an NES and have only played both games recently, so no nostalgia involved, and to me Kid Icarus seems more playable than the original Metroid. Without a map I find Metroid unplayable, although I do have a terrible sense of direction. At least with Kid Icarus I know where I'm going, even if I can't get past level 2.

Paladin's Quest sounds cool though, the original game sounds like it would be really hard, but reusing the same idea could be a cool idea in a new game.

Yeah, I also have to push back a little bit of the discussion of the first game.  A lot of the old Nintendo games had cheat codes, character names, or special passwords that let you access abilities, weapons, or the end game: Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Metroid, and the original Zelda come to mind.   If the original Super Mario Brothers had needed or implemented a password system, it probably would have had a similar code.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever played the Kid Icarus gameboy game?  Was it largely the same as the NES game?

While I understand where you're coming from, Sundoulos, I have to stand by my statement regarding the special password in this game. Punch-Out! has a password to jump to the end of the game, but you still need the skills to actually beat the final boss. There are some pretty darn generous passwords in the original Metroid--I'll give you that--but I'd still argue invincibility is over-the-top.

That's fair.  I think Kid Icarus probably would have fared better as a game if it had done away with a lot of the vertical, climbing levels, or if it had at least made it so that you didn't die if you fell down.   I suppose if they had done away with the climbing, the conceit of climbing out of the "underworld" would have been lost.

...or if it had changed it's powerup system to be a little easier to obtain.  I found the dungeon and the side scrolling levels to be fun, but, then again, it's one of the first NES games I ever played.  I didn't have much to compare it against.

Incidentally, I used the punch-out code to practice against Mike Tyson so much, to this day I have a much easier time against him than I do against Super Macho Man...simply because you always have to work pretty hard to get to latter.

Nice work, especially with the second game: I didn't recognize the game until the third song, which served as a facepalm-moment once I realized that I should have known the game from the beginning.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Episode 76 is in the works but will be late. I recorded it with Karl on Wednesday, which is later than usual, and I haven't had the time / energy to edit it yet. Hopefully I can get it out by Sunday, but you might have to wait longer. :( On the upside, we had a blast recording it, so it should be a good episode!
