IMPRESSIONS: Mega Man Zero Collection
« on: June 05, 2010, 03:54:48 AM »
The complete third Mega Man storyline comes to DS.

The Game Boy edition of Mega Man Anniversary Collection never made it out, but now we have a collection of the acclaimed portable Mega Man Zero series.  Mega Man Zero Collection includes the four Game Boy Advance games in all their glory.  Players can choose to play through the frantic original games individually or complete a much easier version of the series in sequence.

The games are nearly identical to the originals, including the lower GBA resolution, but now the bottom screen displays character wallpapers, which change depending on the action of the top screen.  Once seen, these wallpapers can be viewed from the main menu.

The DS has two extra face buttons compared to the GBA.  The default button mapping has been cleverly designed so that you can use any preferred two-button layout simply by choosing one of the sides of the four-button diamond.  Players can also change the assignments from the menu using the touch screen (for instance, if you wanted to swap in the shoulder buttons).

The collection even includes digital versions of the Japan-only e-Reader cards for Mega Man Zero 3.  Once activated, these “mod cards” actually change elements of the game, and their inclusion really makes the collection “complete.”

The Zero Collection has been designed for Mega Man fans new and old, and is a nice packaging of the four solid Zero-saga games.  Check out video of the compilations's menus and gameplay below.

I read on the Retronauts blog that the ports haven't had their aspect resolution changed from the GBA originals.  Meaning, the action screen has black boarders around it because the game is displayed at 240 x 160 instead of 256 x 192.  How annoying is this?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I mentioned this in the article and you can see it in the video :-p
I would say it's disappointing since more visibility would be nice, but not annoying at all... once you get into the action, you totally forget about the border.

Yes, I saw that you mentioned it.  But you didn't exactly go into any details.

As for the video, since it's a vid of a black DSi taken with a shaky-cam it's quite difficult to see the boarder.

It was a totally valid question.   :P

I think this comes out tomorrow. I might get this.
Maxi is dead. I killed him and took his posts and changed genders.
