The new Sonic game takes place in an outer space theme park.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23138

Today Sega announced Sonic Colors, a new platformer for the Wii and DS starring the company's venerable mascot.

Sonic Colors tells the tale of Sonic as he arrives at an alien theme park that is orbiting the home planet of Dr. Eggman.  Eggman is holding an alien race known as the Wisps hostage, and it's up to the hedgehog hero to free them and defeat the evil doctor. The alien Wisps grant Sonic special "Color Powers" that he absorbs and utilizes to conquer each level, such as the ability to drill into the ground or travel through the level like a laser.  Color Powers can also be strung together to create combos.

The Wii version promises to blend both 3D and 2D action, while the DS version will incorporate both screens into gameplay like past Sonic titles for Nintendo's handheld.

Sonic Colors is slated for "holiday 2010".

  SEGA REVEALS ITS “SONIC COLORS”

An adrenaline-pumping super fast ride through an amazing interstellar amusement park!

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (May 26th, 2010) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. & SEGA® America, Inc., today announced Sonic Colors™, a brand new high speed action adventure in which Sonic the Hedgehog races through incredible theme park inspired worlds to rescue a colorful alien race from the clutches of Dr. Eggman. Sonic Colors will be available on the Wii™ system and the Nintendo DS™ system holiday 2010.

An extraordinary amusement park has been seen orbiting around the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog, and rumours are spreading that an alien race of Wisps, who have a unique colorful energy, are being held captive there by the evil Dr. Eggman.  Soon after arriving at the amusement park, Sonic discovers he is able to use these mysterious alien forces to help the Wisps escape!  Sonic Colors for the Wii seamlessly combines both 3D and classic 2D game play perspectives, while the Nintendo DS version takes full advantage of the consoleÂ’s dual screen.

“In Sonic Colors, players run at supersonic speed through incredible looking planets each with their own unique visual style.” commented Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing, SEGA. “In addition to the classic Sonic gameplay style, the colorful new Wisp power-ups offer a fresh new way of exploring these worlds and helps make Sonic faster than ever before!”

Sonic Colors sees Sonic accelerating to adrenaline-pumping super speeds and blasting through obstacles in ways never before seen in a Sonic game. The alien WispÂ’s featured in the game each have a unique “Color Power” that, once freed, Sonic is able to absorb while speeding through the various theme park inspired planets.  The Wisp energy enables Sonic to create new paths through the stages by drilling through the ground (Yellow Drill) for example, or speeding through the stage as a laser (Cyan Laser). Stringing the Wisp power-ups together creates a combo that increases SonicÂ’s boost gauge even more quickly and exclusive Wisp power-ups will be available for both Wii and the Nintendo DS versions, ensuring a unique and super speedy gameplay experience for Sonic fans everywhere.

Sonic Colors will be available on Wii™ and the Nintendo DS™ system holiday 2010.

Nice to see Sega trying to change up the formula a little bit.

"Sonic Colors"?  Really, Sega, that's the best you could come up with?  Umm...Taste the Rainbow (TM) ?  :-\

Actually, all of a sudden I have an urge to quote Darkened Skye.  ;)

Super Sonic Galaxy I suppose. This isn't coming out for the other systems or did they get the "real" version but still wont be as good as the this version? Though PS360 Unleashes was better.

Was it?  I could have sworn I read that the Wii version has better level designs, though it does use waggle iirc so that does bring it down...

I'm not entirely sure, but from what my Sonic friends tell me there was much less warehog which instantly makes it better.

Here is a video of the colors game. Only the opening cinematic I suppose, looks nice, but so does every Sonic cgi video.

Doesn't seeing Tails fly by Sonic like that bring back great non-Sonic Heroes memories?

If there is 2 player co-op then man... I have no idea what I'm going to do if this turns out mediocre like the rest.

Every time Sega announces a new Sonic game it feels like I want nothing to do with someone and yet every so often they send me an email or a text message asking what I've been up to.  I never respond but they never take the hint.  Sonic is the clingy ex-girlfriend/boyfriend of videogames.

"Sonic Colors" is such a bizarre name.  It's like Sega is just pointing to random words in the dictionary.  "Okay in this next game Sonic will have special... colors?!  Uh, yeah sure!  Colors it is!"

I heard it had less Werehog levels and better daytime stages.

I just find it funny about the comments about the name.

You play the game not the name. The name is just there to show some sort of theme for the game.Hardly matters in the grand scheme of things.

They didn't even spell colour right.

I still don't get why Europeans add a extra "u" to so may words (and frequently have "er" written "re", like center).

If you don't like waggle, just use a GameCube controller.  That's how I played it and I thought it was pretty good.  Never tried the other controller types, though...

They don't add anything, you took the 'u' out. British english was present before American english. Oh (and in) Canada we love our colours, and we drill into the center of a metal stalk at the Ontario Science Centre. Get it?

A game's name is the first impression a developer ever makes with its potential customers, so when it's a particularly bad one it colors (pun not intended) perceptions.  Right now this horrible name tells me that this is just another ****ty Sonic game (an assumption that will probably be closer to the truth than not, given how few even decent Sonic games there are in the entire franchise), and so I have no reason to even think about buying this game.

I think the separate UK trailer makes it clear: These games are designed for the UK market where Sonic is still a big name and will sell huge.

but really,

Rabbids Go Home >> any Sonic

You know, I never drew that connection, but now that you point it out it does have a similar feel to the Sonic games I have played.

Reminds me I need to play more of it too. My sister and I love playing it.

Here is a video of the colors game. Only the opening cinematic I suppose, looks nice, but so does every Sonic cgi video.

Maybe it's just me, but I generally disdain most Sonic FMVs. I think it's because I don't like the way Sonic is modeled in them. His whole look when rendered in 3D bothers me. Maybe I just don't like that 'I'm a badass' look on his face.

I don't think it has anything to do with him being a 3D model.  They noticably changed his look with Sonic Adventure.  His eyes went from black to green and they're more detailed with a clearly defined pupil.  His body is noticably thinner and his "quills" are longer so it looks kind of like he has dreads.  It isn't just a 3D thing.  Compare the cover art of the Genesis games to the Dreamcast ones.  All are 2D images but Sonic looks way worse in the Dreamcast titles.  The new look is in the Sonic Advance games as well which are clearly 2D.

Sonic tries too hard to be cool and ends up being lame.
But the games are fun though. At least, the 2D ones are. The only 3D one I've played is Secret Rings. I'm scared to try any others.

They don't add anything, you took the 'u' out. British english was present before American english.
This isn't exactly true.  British English was standardized only a few decades before American English.  For words like "color," the lack of u actually conforms to the older Latin/Old French spelling rather than the Anglo-French spelling.
