back in my emulation days, i used to have 816 nes games on a cd, and 400 snes games on another cd...no way you'll run out of space on VC games.

Isn't this line of conversation against the forum rules?
No, discussion of emulators and ROMs is not against the rules (but is not encouraged). Only providing or asking for ROMs is against the rules.

I have a non-HDSC 4-gig card that works with both Rock Band 2 and World Tour. It only becomes an issue when I then run WW/VC games off of it because it 'forgets' that the music games can read it. I usually just have to boot the music games without the card in and then hot swap if that is the case but outside of that I have no problems. With AC I just have to pull it out and reinsert it into my Wii during play and it works just fine if it ever has an issue with it.

I figure once I need more room I'll just get a true SDHC card and store all of my WW/VC/other files on that and use the 4gig exclusively for my music games.

Wait, isn't non-HC SD limited to 2GB?

In the official spec, yes.  Didn't stop some manufacturers from sidestepping it, creating unofficial "high capacity" cards.

Recognition of the extra 2GB is then a crap shoot among the devices you use it on.

It sneaks by because it is actually something like 3.98 gigs or something so it is not quite 4.

The filesystem takes up some space. When you have a "blank" media its never completely blank because it always has some sort of filesystem on it. So that's why a media will show less free space than what you expect.

No, that's because manufacturers love using base 10 prefixes (k is 1000) while the size displays in most software use base 2 prefixes (k is 1024).

Aren't both true? Isn't that the reason that the blocks of GameCube memory cards are all weird numbers? 59 instead of 64, 251 instead of 256, 1019 instead of 1024... there's a format file on there that uses 5 blocks, I believe. I've also heard that sometimes the file shows up in the memory card management screen. If you delete it, the memory card is unusable.

The FS takes some space but usually it's not much and the reason you see values like 3.98GB is because of the different prefix interpretations.

KDR, we're both right. Filesystems do matter, because you will notice a difference in the space a more advanced FS like NTFS will take up as opposed to a more simplistic one like FAT32.

My 8 GB Class 2 SD Card finally arrived today (a week late with no tracking info on 1st Class Shipping.  Thanks, ever-incompetent US Postal Service), so I'm just going through the Wii Shop Channel stocking up on everything I've previously purchased.  Damn, I hadn't realized till now just how many VC/WiiWare titles I've bought since the service started.  Transfer times are dramatically better on this card than on my previous 1 gb (which is now a secondary storage device for my PS3).

You should have gotten a class 4 for a and extra $2, much faster transfer rate.

I'm actually pretty satisfied with what I got.  It takes around 30-45 seconds to copy the larger N64/WiiWare titles, and I can live with that.  I wanted a lot more space and a little faster transfer rate, and I got it.

For the extra $2, it probably would have been around 20-25 seconds for larger files.

If having those extra 20 seconds are worth the $2 for then go for it, but copying files is a one-time deal so it doesn't really matter if it takes a bit longer.

I'm not saying it wasn't the post office's fault it was late, but how do you know it wasn't the seller's fault? If there was no tracking it may be because the seller didn't provide it and he/she may have shipped it late. Just saying. Of course, I wouldn't put problems like that beyond the post office either, they are the government after all.

The seller did provide a tracking number only a day after I ordered it, but although the USPS acknowledged that it was a valid number they never added any tracking info for it.  This is far from the first time where this has happened, where the USPS will add the tracking info after the package is delivered.

Ahh, I get what you're saying. I think that's happened to me before too. I think the point of the tracking is mainly to CONFIRM an item has been delivered moreso than to offer real time tracking on it. I guess if you need that you're better off going through a private shipper like UPS or FedEX. They seem to do a better job with that kind of stuff.

I'm pretty sure USPS doesn't offer real-time delivery tracking like UPS and FedEx do.  Tracking for them basically means no-signature-required delivery confirmation.
