Okami Creator Wants To Make Star Fox At Gun Point
« on: April 19, 2010, 12:50:18 PM »
Hideki Kamiya desperately wants a new Star Fox title.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22937

Hideki Kamiya, director of Okami and Bayonetta, is making quite a Twitter name for himself as he recently said he wants Nintendo to force Platinum Games to make a new Star Fox title.

"I want Nintendo's staff to come to Platinum, stick guns at us and tell us 'You guys make a new Star Fox,'" he said.

Apparently Kamiya proposed a space shooter years ago, but was so content with Star Fox 64 that he thought there was no reason to go further with the concept.

Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto recently said he would like to see a new Star Fox game. Whether there is one in the pipeline is unknown, but there is definitely support from fans and developers for another entry in Nintendo's definitive anthropomorphic animal-starring space shooter.

I love that people who are in the game making business want to make Star Fox, but at this point I trust no one to do it but Nintendo. If it was a colaboration like F-Zero GX then by all means go ahead. Platinum Games made anything Star Fox like befor?

So Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya wants Nintendo to come to them and fund a new Star Fox project.  I'm sure Platinum Games never producing a mega-hit (outside perhaps Bayonetta) has something to do with that.  Yes, it's nice to want big checks from a publisher more talented than you.  I'll stick with Nintendo (or Treasure) reviving the franchise, thanks.

This is good example of Japan just getting something a little bit wrong. ;)  If you WANT to do something then it makes no sense for it to be done at gunpoint.

I love Star Fox but I'm not begging for a new game because the franchise has just been so tainted.  In a way I would rather it just remain dead, instead of seeing it live on in mediocrity.  If they bring it back I really only trust Nintendo.  If they pass it off to someone else, that's what caused the problem in the first place.  Star Fox sucks now because Nintendo treated it like just some brand name.  To restore it, Nintendo has to treat it with respect so THEY have to revive it.  Though I would consider Treasure as an exception.  Since they have a reputation for making great shooters, including the similar Sin & Punishment, handing to them would be a clear attempt to revive the series properly.  It's the handing it off to any old dev that was the problem.  The sad thing is F-Zero could very well have ended up the same way if GX didn't turn out as good as it did.

Platinum Games made anything Star Fox like befor?

They are a relatively new company (they were founded in 2006). Their only games so far are MadWorld, Bayonetta, and Infinite Space. I guess Infinite Space is the closest to a Star Fox game.

Considering there are Space Harrier-esque and 3D STG segments in Bayonetta, I'd say Bayonetta is closer to a Star Fox game by Platinum Games than Infinite Space.

Why fight?

Platinum is a Treasure, so why don't they just collaborate on it and give us the best damn StarFox we've ever seen.

When you've created a series of commercial flops and are probably struggling to make ends meet, I suppose you'd do anything for a hint of cash.

MadWorld wasn't a huge success, but it wasn't a flop. Bayonetta has sold over 1.1 million copies worldwide, and Infinite Space just came out last month.

If Nintendo isn't going to do it internally, they should let Platinum try. It couldn't be worse than Namco's attempt.

They should add more animal friends. Sonic has proven that the more animal friends you have, the more awesome the game is as a result.

Also, there should be plenty of awkward Rogue Squadron 3-type on-foot crap that nobody actually wants, but is "innovative." Why shoot things from the Landmaster when you can go "pew pew" with a laser pistol?

You know what the best solution would be? Re-release a better-looking version of either Starfox (SNES) or Starfox 64 as a launch title for the 3DS. I would be forced to buy the system on launch day.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

Why don't they just handle "on-foot" (out of the starwing) missions like S&P gameplay with a jetpack on StarFox's back, or make it the exact same left to right gameplay on the ground with a barrel roll while on foot? doesn't seem that difficult. Use the pointer for aiming.... I can picture it in my head.

Deep inhale........Head shaking exhale......

I'm sure Hideki Kamiya-san, was refering to the type of pressure that Nintendo imposes on development studios when they "lend out" their IP's.

The most frustrating thing is that we can all picture it in out heads. Making a new starfox should be a no brainer, yet I have very little faith that it will happen.

Well, I think(and so does Kamiya-san)  that with Nintendo looking over your shoulder is more than likely to bring out the best in a developer or at least what comes out as the end product is what Nintendo had in mind but needed a second brain to think of it.

Sadly history has shown us that doesnt always mean a better product because we did get Star Fox Adventures but we also got Punch Out! and I'm at least thankful for the latter.

StarFox Adventures was not a case of Nintendo farming out an IP to a trusted developer and watching over their shoulder to create a great product.

SFA was Nintendo seeing the similarities of Dinosaur Planet to StarFox and wanting to shoe horn Starfox IP into the title to not only help Rare speed up development (since they would take forever on everything) but to make a known product out of it so that it would get some sales from the Nintendo loyal, there was no nurturing from Mommy Nintendo when it came to that game. It was more like Nintendo trying to get one last game out of Rare before the sale to MS.

hell there may have been other reasons to make it a Star Fox game, if it didn't it might have ended up on another system. I would say that it was pretty good, and I think a lot of its not-goodness was because they shoved the Star Fox universe on it. I think a lot more people would have liked it if you actually had a real battle with General Scales and not Andros. I think they did the same thing to Zant in TP

Why don't they just NOT BOTHER with on-foot missions at all?  Seriously, no one likes them so why do they feel compelled to include them?  And this applies to a lot of vehicle based games.

Star Fox 64 added two new vehicles and offered full 3D areas that weren't on rails.  That ain't re-inventing the wheel, it's just adding some cool new stuff and expanding on the concept of the first game.  Since Star Fox has always had the wingmen the OBVIOUS thing to have done for a third game was allow you to play through the story-mode with FOUR PLAYERS!!  ARGGHH!! Why is this no-brainer idea so hard for Nintendo to grasp?!

Do that mulitplayer thing, add a new vehicle or let the player choose a couple different ship types, new story, modern graphics (since Star Fox 64 looks rather dated now) and Star Fox is back.  Armak88 is right in that WE can figure out at least a good starting point and yet Nintendo can't.  How frustrating!
