XBLA recommendations
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:12:45 PM »
I know people don't really like these, but I just bought my first Microsoft points and am trying to figure out what to do with them (I got a 1600 point card). I already rules out worthless crap like Avatar accessories and themes/pics. Of the games I own, the only DLC I could see myself liking is the Crackdown one (that adds several new vehicles, a new weapon, new game type, and new Achievements).

I am almost certain to get games though. I was thinking maybe Peggle since I played the PSN demo and really loved it, which would take care of 800 points (I might get the Peggle Nights expansion later). The other 800 I was thinking maybe some classic arcade games like Dig Dug, Smash TV, or Root Beer Tapper.

Any recommendations? I already have both XBLA discs Microsoft has released, so don't mention Pac-Man: Championship Edition, Uno, Feeding Frenzy, Boom Boom Rocket, Luxor 2, Bejeweled 2, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Wik: Fable of Souls, Hardwood Backgammon, Outpost Koloki X, Texas Hold'em Poker. I also plan to get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, so no games included on that.

Peggle's definitely an excellent pick, as is Shadow Complex; Space Invaders Extreme; and 'Splosion Man.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3...or Shadow Complex. People call Shadow Complex the "Super Metroid of Xbox 360"...and they're absolutely right.

Shadow Complex does look good and reviewers love it, that may have to wait though as its 1200 points and I really want Peggle.

I liked the demo of 'Splosion Man, but they were talking about it on the CAGcast a couple of weeks ago and CheapyD said he got frustrated by how difficult it got later in the game.

I've never been a fan of the Mortal Kombat series. If I were to pick a fighting game, it would probably be one of the Street Fighters on XBLA.

How similar is Space Invaders Extreme to the DS version? I played a few minutes of the DS one and liked it.

I've only played the 360 version, but from what I've seen of the reviews it's a pretty direct port.

If you liked Geometry Wars on the disc you should check out Geometry Wars 2. It's quite a bit more fleshed out, with some pretty interesting modes and even more interesting Achievements; normally I see Achievements as pointless, but in that game I went after them because they really made you play the game differently.

Also, if you like Star Fox, check out Aces of the Galaxy.

Make Shadow Complex your #1 target. I hear Castle Crashers is pretty popular among fans of beat 'em ups but I'm not among them. R-Type is a good investment if you liked R-Type in the past (but it shows you how casual people have become when there's a mode where you have infinite lives and aren't even reset to the checkpoint! R-Type isn't R-Type if you aren't reset to a checkpoint on death, forcing you to master every part instead of accepting a death or two, that's what R-Type is about!). Sure, 15€ is a bit much for R-Type but remember they'd probably sell 1 and 2 separately for 10€ each otherwise.

I bought Peggle early this morning (I will get Shadow Complex next time I buy points). I beat Adventure mode and loved it (I don't think I will get the 2 Achievements that require you to hit every peg). Just trying to figure out what to do with the remaining 800.

Geometry Wars 2.  I've almost bought a 360 just to play this one cheap game.

Change my gamer tag? What does my gamertag (which is TJ Spyke 2) have to do with this? I can't get Shadow Complex right now, it's 1200 points ($15).

I will check out the demo for Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (props to Microsoft for making demos required for every XBLA game, I wish Nintendo did this for WiiWare and/or VC games).

With my remaining 800 points I ended up getting Splosion Man (it's on sale this week for 50% off) and Root Beer Tapper. Splosion Man has been really fun so far (i'm through the first 4 levels). I regret getting Root Beer Tapper, I should have gotten something like Dig Dug.

Also, what is up with Capcom requiring you to buy Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting to see its achievements? Ever other XBLA demo i've played lets you see what the game's achievements are.

It probably has something to do with achievements being a throw-away feature in games that no one really cares about.

Actually, most Xbox 360 gamers (at least most who go online) do care about Achievements.

Then apparently you think the majority of gamers are stupid. I guarantee that if you had a poll for Xbox 360 owners, the majority would say they DO care about Achievements.

That's because only people that care about achievements would waste their time on a poll about achievements. I just know that none of my friends care about achievements, and I've never heard anyone talk about them online. Sure, lots of people unlock ****-tons of them, but that happens naturally when you play a game a lot.
