Grand Theft Auto wii
« on: January 27, 2010, 02:15:04 AM »
One game that I am looking forward to in the future is a GTA game for the wii. I have to admit that I am one of the biggest fans of the series and actually enjoyed China Town Wars for the DS. However, how would the game fare on the wii?

The graphical visual style could adapt the over world look of GTA 4 into a style reminiscent of Shattered Memories. The charcter controls and weapon system similar to that of RE 4 where you use the wii mote to target and shoot.

As for fighting, Rockstar could include the boxing motion from wii sports to suit the needs of the game. Imagine beating someone with a bat in the game while holding the wii mote like a club. This motion would be enhanced by the wii motion plus, of course.

I am a little confused as to how you would drive vehicules. Perhaps holding the wii mote side ways or something similar to the driving mechanics of the first No More Heroes game.

Overall, it would be a GTA game with motion controls. However, considering the quality of the DS game, I am sure that this iteration would be something that no wii owner should miss. Lastly, It is not a matter of "if," but "When" for this games release. Rockstar is probably working on it as we speak and I suspect E3 2010 for its debut, similar to how GTA DS was announced during the 2008 show.

I remember discussions like these in the PGC forums. I sware kytim89 is traveling through time like in Lost, but some how keeps the discussions relevant by talking about the current generation of systems. Kytim how old are you, if you don't mind me asking? You remind me of younger me.

As for the GTA talk, it aint gonna happen until the Nintendo 6. Then Nintendo will have the power and user base that no developer can ignore. But thats a while away so it is completely out of my mind.

I quite enjoyed Chinatown Wars. But I hear sales for that game were mediocre so I sadly doubt that they are inclined to make a Wii version at the moment. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

If you want to play a game like that, try The Godfather or Scarface. I've yet to try Scarface but I adored Godfather on Wii.

People tend to classify No More Heroes as a sandbox game as well but it's not quite the same though it does have a free-roaming world with side missions and such.

Since Grand Theft Auto worked on the PS2 is can obviously work on the Wii.  It just needs to be original and have the scope of the main series.  It has to be treated like a REAL GTA game and not just some GTA product for the "Wii audience" passed off to the b-team.  Put the same effort into GTA Wii as was put in GTA IV and you've got a winner.  I will not even consider buying anything less.

Ian is right. If the Wii gets a GTA game, it better be a REAL GTA game and not an on-rails collection of minigames.

We already have GTA on Wii: it's called Bully and you should play it, TC.  Given how sick I am of open world games at this point, I'm perfectly fine with not getting another GTA-type game on the Wii.

Would you guys rate Bully higher than Scarface? I was planning to get Scarface when I felt like another sandbox game but I might get Bully instead.

I haven't played Scarface (I have played Bully, though), as for the most part Open World games aren't really my thing.  From what I've heard of the game, though, the Wii version of Bully's definitely a better experience.

I'm the only one on these boards who prefered Scarface over both Godfather and Bully eh? To be honest I only played Bully for an hour or so, since I lent it to my girlfriend to play and just wanted to try it out, but I couldn't get in to it. Godfather was awesome, and I played/beat it before scarface but I'm sorry.. I just like Scarface better. IMO the Godfather was fugly, and while it had more side missions than Scarface, they were just as repetitive. Godfather had better gesture based controls, but Scarface had better IR controls which ended up being more important.

What takes Scarface up a notch in my book is that the faster cars (with SOLID driving controls) combined with a soundtrack full of 80s tunes is just pure WIN in my book. Oh and the al pacino sound-alike does a great fucking job bringing the character to life. I sometimes I still play this to blow off some steam and keep laughing at his taunts and oddball sayings like "Man, I gotta get another tiger" lol. Plus its fun to decorate your mansion :P, which IMO is more fun than finding every safe to blow up or bank to heist in GF

To be fair, the PSP version of Chinatown Wars is selling poorly too. I haven't played either version, but the DS version got a lot of good reviews and that makes it more of shame that it sold poorly.

Grand Theft Auto is like Real-Time Strategy: I've bought quite a few of them despite not really playing them much and not really liking what I have played.

I wouldn't count on this ever happening.

Quote
"As for the prospect of a GTA Wii game, Sam Houser reportedly told Nintendo Power that the series wasn't a good fit on Nintendo's uber-popular console. "It didn't feel natural to us, I guess," he said, according to an advanced copy obtained by fan site Nintendo Everything...

...So will there ever be a Wii GTA? Houser wouldn't rule out the possibility, saying, "We haven't really done any concrete, major thinking about the Wii, one way or another."

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6198128.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;9

I don't think this is a case of mature gamers or the size of the userbase or any of the usual excuses that we hear. They've shown they haven't ignored the Wii because there's already Bully, Table Tennis and Manhunt out for it. The Wii may be the best-selling console and I'm sure there's pressure on Rockstar to make a GTA game for the Wii, but they probably can't think of something which would fit.

You kind of have to respect that, I should think. Rockstar could put out some piece of GTA garbage that would probably sell a million, so it's nice to see a developer consider what they want to make as opposed to what would make them lots of cash.

Take Two's going to crumble financially.

And as for GTA, all Rockstar has to do is come up with some new ridiculous story and shove it into Wii (like the good ol' PS2 LIMITED-TECH DAYS) and shove in Wii controls.  They're a 3rd party, what's with all this "major thinking" nonsense?

What we're seeing is laziness or a resource inability to commit to a new "GTA brand" project.

Rockstar isn't stupid. The DS is the best selling handheld, yet the owners didn't buy Chinatown Wars despite raving reviews. Why would they repeat history on the Wii?  It makes zero sense. It has nothing to do with laziness and everything to do with competence and general common sense.   The market just isn't there.

Chinatown Wars is reportedly approaching the million sales mark so it does appear to be a slow burner.

Chinatown Wars was definitely not a console-style 3D Zelda-derivative sandbox game (on a person's primary cutting-edge game system).  The difference in presentation also affects how it's marketed (remember the Vice City and San Andreas commercials?  not going to get those same results from this version of GTA).  Console GTA buyers take a glance at it and they're not jumping on it cuz it's instantly does not look like the GTA they're accustomed to, no matter what critics say.

Therefore you can't use the performance of the DS version to gage a Wii version unless the Wii version is expected to make a similar awkward change from the modern GTA norm.

All the other rules about 3rd party effort apply:  "how do they know if they haven't really tried with the same resources and enthusiasm they treated ____ games for ____ consoles?"

I bought and played Chinatown wars on the DS and I loved it. One reason why it might not have done so well is that it looked and played a bit different than the typical console GTA games. This wouldn't be an issue with the Wii because the Wii is stronger than a PS2 and GTA games on the PS2 have done quite well.

Wow. So many rules about what a devolper can and can't do to have somthing sell on the Wii. Why so complicated?  Can't they just make good games?  Apparently not. If only Rockstar would visit these boards. We cleary could have informed them Chinatown Wars was a bad idea. How lazy and arrogant of them to assume we would just buy it because it's a great game. It's not the right kind of great game!

That's exactly it.  The buck doesn't stop at making a great game.  It's up to them to make a great game that people care about, and to be the spearhead for informing people about it.

It's complicated cuz it's certainly NOT as simple as dumping retarded games and strange spinoffs onto an allegedly casual audience and expecting sales to keep up thru the same strategy 3 years running, as Take Two's publishing peers have been happily exercising.

Glad you made this realization.  If you used the good part of your head more often these wouldn't be surprises.

Why can't Rockstar port over the older GTA games to the Wii? They've done this with Bully already, and that worked out for them, didn't it?

I can understand concerns about profits, but porting a game requires very minimal resources. Hell, they don't even necessarily have to add new motion controls for it if they don't want to. But they should make it happen because it will sell and it won't cost much for them to do it.
