New Forum Game - Screw with the poster with the largest Avatar.
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:53:11 PM »
So, we have this forum rule that avatars cannot be over 30KB.

Several posters have avatars over 30KB.

If you find a user that has an avatar over the limit, post a link to their profile in this thread.

Wednesday, at 9:00 PM (my time) whichever user has the biggest avatar (determined by file size) at the end of this round wins!

What do you win?

Well, A.) You get a brand new avatar, chosen by me!  But wait, there's more!  B.) You also lose your avatar changing privileges for one month.

So, start checking out everyone's avatar and see who's got the largest one.  And if you've got an oversized avatar, I suggest changing it before the contest ends!

Also, stop by this thread if you're interested in larger avatars.

Well, apparently Photoshop can't output a 100x100 JPEG that's less than 30 KB, even on the lowest quality setting.

I wonder if you saved the image, loaded it in Paint, then resaved it what you'd end up with...

I don't have easy access to Paint, and I don't care about it enough to boot up Windows to check.

Is there an avatar offender registry for the forums? I know I'd feel at lot safer if I knew who they are and where they live (maybe I should've posted this in NWR Discussion?).

What determines the file size of an image? I'd think that with a limit as small as 100x100, it wouldn't even be possible to go over 30KB. My current one is 3.45KB.

I'm surprised the forum software even allows images larger than the limit to be used...

The forum standards are many many years out of date.
It was understandable when everyone was most likely on a dial-up and at best on a slow ass DSL connection. But now it's 2010 and it's time to move on.

Now most people have a internet capable computer are most likely using broadband and a good browser allows you to block out the images you don't want to load. So if someone has an avatar that you feel is too large to load on your outdated computer and slow internet connection then simply block it or just turn off all images.

I've proposed that we update these out of date policies and introduce a new Avatar limit of 100w x 120h upto 130kb in size. That is 20pixel taller than what we have now for poster like avatars and 100kb larger in size for good quality .gifs that can be looped.

I propose no animations in avatars because they're distracting and oftentimes just plain annoying.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

* You may not personally insult another user.
* You may not pointlessly criticise the website and its staff. Constructive criticism is welcomed and encouraged, but if you're just going to post "NWR sucks" in a thread and leave, don't bother.

you can stop a .gif from animating.
I think hitting the escape button does the trick.

Most of peoples issues with avatars can be handled on their own computer.
Too big (file size)? right click. block it.
animated? press escape. stop it.
Too large (pic size)? shouldn't the forum automatically format the pic size?

Wow. vudu does suck.  We're not staff, remember?

Also, new additional rule.  By posting in this thread, if your own avatar is over 30KB, you're nominating yourself as a part of the contest as well. :)

well actually, DaAman64 didnt say Vudu sucked, he proposed it. There is a slight difference.

lets break apart the word propose pro-pose (for-position)

he simply agreed with the position that Vudu sucks, but he didn't actually nominate the position.

I for the record counter-pose DaAman64's position

I'd disagree as I view 2394723 posts at a time, and having 100kb attached to each one would be bad news, except, there are only like four active posters anyway
