Trademarks Registered For 'Wii Relax' in North America
« on: January 14, 2010, 07:10:34 AM »
Nintendo may soon be asking you to get less excited about a game.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20777

Although nothing has been announced formally yet, Nintendo has laid the groundwork for Wii Relax in North America via a series of trademarks filed recently.  Similar trademarks were filed in Europe under the name WiiRelax.

The trademarks seem to run the gamut from video games to trading card games.  Until something is announced by Nintendo, it remains unknown what this trademark refers to.   Nintendo has not formally announced any titles for the Vitality Sensor, but it's possible that Wii Relax may be tied to that peripheral.

Nintendo World Report will have more information on Wii Relax as it is available.

I was going to post how big I am yawning right now, but Nintendo would count that as a compliment

Given that most of the quirky concepts that Nintendo tries out turn to gold, I'm interested in what ways Nintendo will deliver a new experience for relaxing like they did for its opposite, exercising. I don't believe that Wii Relax will simply be a one-dimensional relaxation aid; it probably will, like Wii Fit, use the technology for new games to play.

Wii Relax: TURN YOUR WII OFF AND SLEEP.

Guaranteed to sell millions and will probably cost less than Wii Music.

Ever since Nintendo started the Wii Series I've been waiting to see how far they'll take non-gaming.  At what point will they take it too far and release something that is so far removed from a game that it ends up blowing up in their face and being a huge bomb.  Like "stores full of unsold copies of Tony Hawk: Ride they couldn't pay for you to take away" bad.  I thought Wii Music could have been it but it wasn't.  This could be it but you never know.  I think it's inevitable though.  Nintendo is so confident so they'll keep pushing it.  At some point they'll cross the line.  Hopefully it just shakes them up.  I don't want them to go broke from it.

But I think part of the problem with using it in new a different games will come down to how the final product looks. Does Nintendo design it with only WiiRelax in mind or do they take 3rd party games that might not fit the same genre into consideration?

Will you be able to hold the wiimote/nunchuck and still use Vitality sensor comfortably?

I really doubt this will be that game. If anything, this will just put more Wiis in places we didn't think we would see them and people using them possibly professionally to do something we wouldn't have really seen coming. We gamers might not be all that into whatever Nintendo has planned, but I think it's clear that this product is centered on us, but we are more than welcome to enjoy it too.

I don't see much point in a relaxation game/app for Wii, when we already have Wii Fit. Gentle exercise is one of the best ways to relax and conquer stress, and Wii Fit is as gentle as it gets.

To be fair, I'm sure not many people saw the point/potential of WiiFit when it was first released.
But look at us now.

I don't know which of the lot of you came up with that tagline, but pat yourself on the back.

Nintendo views everything in tunnel vision.  I am certain they designed the vitality sensor entirely with their own ideas, and ONLY their own ideas, in mind.  Doesn't mean it isn't flexible enough for third parties but that won't be intentional design.

What a coincidence, because I couldn't be less excited about a "game" announcement.  ::)
