Netflix comes to Wii.... finally.

Nintendo Wii to Add Netflix Service for Streaming Video
Quote
Nintendo is bringing Netflix’s online streaming video service to its Wii gaming console, the most popular in the industry, the companies plan to announce Wednesday. The service lets subscribers choose from a catalog of generally older movies and television shows and watch them instantly.
...
The Wii has had only minimal video material, but it will take a big step forward in this regard with Netflix, when the Wii adds the service this spring. Wii owners with a broadband Internet connection who have at least a $9-a-month subscription to Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service will be able to use the online service at no additional cost.

But Wii owners will need to receive a free software disc in the mail from Netflix and put it into their console when they want to watch a movie, as on the PS3.

I'm waiting on the official confirmation from the Netflix blog, but we are getting it from NYTimes right now and that's official enough for me.
I hope they are able to make a Netflix Channel at some point to streamline the streaming process.

Sweet, here's hoping we can load the disc onto our externals and boot from USB Loader GX or better yet, HBC.

Isn't the video quality ASS, even by VHS TV bootleg standards?

I'm sure the video quality will be as good as The Nintendo Channel videos which were much better than I expected.

Video quality on the PC is perfectly fine.

The only improvement Netflix needs is subtitles that you can turn on or off at will during a movie/show/video.

I read somewhere that the only reason the PS3 uses a disc to load is because of some contract Netflix has with MS for the 360.

If that's true, then like the PS3, once that contract is up, we could see a Netflix channel...

Word on the street is that the MS contract is up in the fall/winter(Q4).
Originally I had thought that it had meant fall/winter(Q4) of 2009, when the last rumor had popped up right before PS3 got Netflix, but now it seems that whoever knew about the contract was talking about Q42010.

I bet it's like a live Linux DVD with 480p Flash video support. I would say I "hope" instead of "bet"...but I have a 360...and an HTPC...so I could care less, personally. Still, it's good for Wii owners.

Well, if that's what it is then the hacker/homebrew crowd will be really excited to get their hands on a disc so they can start disassembling it and finding ways to get their Linux.

Figures this would happen the day my new Blu-Ray player w/ Netflix streaming arrives.  Literally--THE DAY.

Oh well.

Yup--seems like it's just not possible on a stand-alone player.  I need to buy a new PC--my current one was built before Half-Life 2 came out--so I'll probably just get a lap top and hook that directly up to my TV when I want to watch Hulu.

build a computer. it will be much cheaper and you can use your windows license from your current computer. tiger direct has deals on some pretty powerful base models all the time; Quad cores with 4 GB ram, case, PSU and grafix card for $399. saw one the other day for $199

Vudu, my laptop is about 5 years old and I can watch Hulu with no problem (they fixed all the bugs it had early on). As for Netflix, that's another story. Does anyone know if the PC streaming has improved in the last 2 years? The last time I streamed Netflix was in March 2008, and it was terrible. I had pretty fast broadband,  but all the buffering still caused a 90 minute movie 3 hours to watch (about 30 minutes buffering to start the movie, another 30 minuted buffering in the middle of the movie, then another 15 minuted about 90% through the movie). I heard it has improved since then.

Netflix is much better now. I watch it without problem on this P.O.S. laptop that I'm using right now. As long as I clear the cache, cookies and the stuff that slow the computer down (damn FF) it runs smooth and quickly.

I don't mean that I can't watch Hulu on my current PC--I can and sometimes do.  But I want to be able to watch Hulu on my TV and it's not convenient for me to string a cable across my living room to hook it up to the television.

My sister has Netflix but she doesn't own a Wii. I guess I'll ask if she'll get one of these to see if it will work with my system.

It will work in your system as long as she's willing to share her Netflix login information with you.
