Wii, Mario Pass Sales Milestones in Japan
« on: December 16, 2009, 07:30:17 AM »
New sales figures show that Nintendo's flagship console and game are both selling incredibly well.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20566

New sales figures reported by Famitsu show that Wii has sold over nine million units in Japan.

The site, whose data comes from Enterbrain, says that the total number of Wii consoles sold between launch and December 13 is 9,048,012.  For comparison, the closest competitor is the Playstation 3 with 4,020,563 units sold.

The report also contains sales figures for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which has sold 1,401,558 copies through the 13th.  As its first week sales were over 900,000, this means that the game sold over half a million copies in its second week on the shelf.

I remember taking bets a while back in the sales thread.

Who was gonna cross the next million mark first, PS3 or Wii.
Looks like they both did it at the same time.

9 Million already, very good Nintendo. The better Nintendo does, the more enraged the industry becomes... I like it!

I think NSMBWii sales for both Japan and North America total to 3.4 million. Any word on how it's doing in Europe and Australasia?

Time for a new bet.

Nintendo has a pretty piss poor Q1 coming up in Japan and
Sony has a pretty decent one.

Who will reach the next million first?
Will Nintendo reach 10mill before Sony reaches 5 mill?

Step right up and place your bets people.

Mario was holding strong in Aussieland, then it flopped as Wii Sports Resort took its throne.  Additionally, Wii Cricket is outselling Call of What: Modern WHAT 2 there.

Gee, the Wii and the latest Mario game are selling well.  In related news, reliable sources in the scientific community have confirmed that the Earth is indeed round.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a fantastic game and well deserving of its sales.  How's Moden Warfare 2 doing?  Reggie made a bet that NSMB Wii could beat it.

The thing is, the Wii was doing terribly in Japan, with sales dropping each week while the PS3 kept going up and up. In an earlier story Iwata said that this was a bad situation and that Nintendo needed very strong holiday sales in order to regain sales in Japan.

So the fact that the Wii and NSMB Wii are doing extremely well in Japan is indeed good news for them and thus worth mentioning it.

Funny how things turn around for them after releasing a good game.  I hope Nintendo noticed that.

Purely coincidental. There is nothing to be learned from this.

Actually, that bet only applied to NPD numbers through january 2010, hence these Japan numbers don't factor into it. I have no doubt that NSMBWii will perform spectacularly, but I don't expect NSMBWii to perform THAT good THAT quickly.

Not to take away from the impressive numbers posted by New Super Mario Brothers, but does anyone else feel a bit saddened that in one week the game matched the lifetime sales of Super Mario Galaxy?

It's ok. SMG2 only has about ~60k to go to reach the Million sellers club, and Giftmas and the eventual release of SMG2 might help it make it there.

Sorta, but I guess it just goes to show that 2D gameplay will never go out of fashion. And honestly, I'm not surprised that there are more people who are willing to jump into NSMBWii than SMG. Mario's forays into 3D have been astounding landmarks in gaming ever since the N64, but that progress also seems to have left a lot of people behind, a lot of people Nintendo realized deserved better than being left behind in this generation of gaming.

Also, NSMBWii is multiplayer Co-op. IN A TRADITIONAL MARIO GAME!!! That alone makes for omg-play-it-now awesomeness.

I'm not surprised the game is more popular either, but selling in one week what its 3D companion has sold in two years is just mind-boggling. Of course, I'm not saying the game shouldn't be selling so well; it's a great game and I love it. I'm saying the opposite: I'd have liked to see Super Mario Galaxy sell better! I guess when looking at the worldwide sales then it has achieved a good number, but I'm just worried that this doesn't bode well for future 3D Mario games. Yes, I know that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just around the corner, but that game was announced before NSMBWii was released and Nintendo knew that 2D Mario can still sell on a home system. So I hope to see a continuation of both types, if Nintendo can handle it.

The question is not if, but will they even bother handling it?

We probably won't see another NSMB title until the next system if it goes evergreen.

I'll sum it up in three points: DLC, 70€, browngray.

Many people believed that NSMBW wouldn't sell well because it's a 2D game on a home console and the conventional wisdom is that home consoles need 3D. Additionally NSMBW sold significantly better than Galaxy.
