Topic: So...Windows 7?

I'm pretty impressed so far. It's really not that much different than Vista...or any other Windows OS since 95, but it does run very smoothly, and UAC notifications are gone for the most part. I didn't think I was going to like the new taskbar layout, but I think it's pretty great. I have noticed an issue where sometimes my laptop seems to lock up if I'm away for a while, closing the lid to put it to sleep makes it "come back to life," or just waiting a few minutes does too. I think this is a power setting issue, or possibly a BIOS problem, but other than that, it's been Jim Dandy since I got my upgrade disc installed a week or so ago. Any thoughts/annoyances? I also like how you can truly upgrade your Vista install, and still have all of your programs and whatnot just as they were before. I did a clean install for the best performance, but it's nice to have that as an option, especially for the casual user.

I've been wanting to try out Win7 but it will have to wait till the next computer I put together or something goes horribly wrong with the one I currently have.

My father forced me to upgrade my laptop from Windows '98 to Windows 7 when he wiped my computer (it was having major crashing problems), and while it took me a long time to get used to how Windows 7 handles things (it reminds me of a Mac OS) I do like it overall.  Thankfully, I was able to fix some the more irritating visual elements of W7, such as making the windows opaque so they look "anchored" on the screen instead of free-floating.  I was also a little surprised to see that the version of Windows Media Player in W7 is not a piece of crap like the previous versions were, but Internet Explorer 8 is a slow, buggy POS.  Yeah, I've been using Firefox ever since the shift.

I am curious about something, though: have you run into a problem with Firefox/IE8 where after a period of time (roughly a day or so) your computer will just refuse to be on the internet?  Your connection will still be listed as active, but all your browser will bring up is "untitled" pages until you reboot your computer?  Mine does that at least once a day since I installed W7, and it's really getting irritating.

I have had Windows 7 on my PC since late Sept (Thank you school for giving me the early RTM version because I am going for a networking degree!) I had been running the Beta and RC ever since they came out. I have had no problems for the most part all the way back to the time it was in beta. Most stable version of Windows I have ever used.

haha i had win98 for years, there was really no reason to upgrade for a very long time,i ran photoshop and played half-life. I didn't have any problems with 98 until i bought a Nintendo USB Wifi dongle, it didn't work with 98 and that was totally lame. Somehow i think it would run on Ubuntu, because most things seem to work pretty well with it. I didn't even have to install my wireless adapter.

I've decided I want to get Windows 7. Just for the **** of it. I don'twant to do dual boot as that's a lot of work and my hard drive alreadyhas 2 partitions on it.

Basically, what I want to do is just put Windows 7 in place of XP, which I'm pretty sure I can do.

Myhard drive has 2 partitions. One is C:, which is where Windows XP isinstalled. The other is D:, which has all my important data (includinggames). So basically I already backed my system up. However, what Iwant to know is if I can even do this without consequence. If I were tojust clear out the C: partition and install Windows 7 on it, would Istill be able to access the D: partition without any issues? Or would Ihave to reformat that partition to so Windows 7 could interact with it?I have reinstalled Windows XP on C: before without having to doanything to D:, but that's probably because I made both partitions wheninstalling XP the first time...


Anyway, any info would be appreciated.

BruceSmith - as long as it's an NTFS partition, it should be fine. You'll have to reinstall everything most likely, since you can't upgrade XP to Win7.

I can't stand the search in Win7. The search feature in XP is better. But its pretty good otherwise.
