Link's going to have a princess riding shotgun this time around.

Nintendo has announced that, for the first time in the storied history of the franchise, Princess Zelda herself (i.e. not an alter ego, such as Shiek or Tetra) will be a playable character in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS.

Zelda rides along with Link on his train (which is customizable), giving him hints and storyline details.  Her spirit can also be used to control suits of armor known as Phantoms.  These Phantoms can be used in battle, and they can also be employed to solve puzzles and reveal secrets.  The game also promises to take a closer look at the character of Zelda herself, bringing her story to the forefront for the first time.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is scheduled for release on December 7.

Link and Zelda Join Forces in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

Newest Entry in Renowned Video Game Series Features Historic Team-Up for Timeless Duo

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- It was among the most heinous incidents in video game history: In 1986, Princess Zelda™ was kidnapped from the land of Hyrule, setting off an intrepid rescue adventure for young hero Link™. Unfortunately for Zelda, this offense has been repeated more than a dozen times since, leaving her largely out of sight while Link traversed dark dungeons and confronted monstrous enemies alone in order to save her.     This time, in the new Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DSi™ adventure The Legend of Zelda™: Spirit Tracks, that all changes.

For the first time in the 23-year history of The Legend of Zelda series, Princess Zelda is leaving the villainous clutches of the underworld behind and joining the adventure with Link. In The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, the spirit of Zelda accompanies Link on his quest to save Hyrule. Directly impacting game play like never before, ZeldaÂ’s spirit can take control of hulking suits of armor known as Phantoms, allowing the player to direct both Link and these new allies as they battle enemies, solve puzzles and uncover secrets. Zelda also rides alongside Link on his customizable train, offering wisdom that will help players find new areas, storylines and items. The team of Link and Zelda presents countless new storyline details for fans to enjoy, including a closer look at Princess Zelda herself, one of the most iconic video game characters of all-time.

“More than two decades into its rich history, The Legend of Zelda has introduced another historic first for players as Link and Zelda unite to save Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of AmericaÂ’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Combining these unprecedented new story and game-play elements with the seriesÂ’ innovative touch-screen interface on Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi, the game is sure to surprise and delight new and longtime fans.”

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks launches in North America on Dec. 7. For more information, visit www.Zelda.com/SpiritTracks.

Does the Internet not know the concept of a goddamn spoiler alert?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I know, I know ... it's not your fault.  I read this 4 fucking times before seeing it here.  FOUR.

I couldn't not know this information if my life depended on it.

I miss 1996.

I miss 1996.

I do, too.
That was actually quite the notable year for me as it was the year that I became crazy about video games. Thanks N64 and SMRPG!

We finally agree on something. There goes a day one purchase for me since the anticipation just wore off.

Err... Phantom Hourglass had a customizable vehicle?

And Zelda was a playable character in two previous games.

Lame.

Well atleast some fans are happy.

For some reason, I've always been a late comer when it came to the portable Zelda titles, so I honestly never saw myself picking this one up day one anyway. I was surprised that I enjoyed PH so much, so i don't have any doubts that ST will be a fun title, but i just never seem to get excited for a portable Zelda.. the fact that they might be spoiling what coulda been a neat surprise just makes me even less anxious to play it.

So do you actually play as The Princess Zelda herself, or do you control her spirit which actually let you play as a Phantom?

Zelda's soul takes control of the Phantom Armor, she is not playable per say except for when she is controlling the armor.

Yeah, lame, but I honestly don't care.

Well you're still not playing as Zelda as herself, your playing as her soul which controls a piece of armor that has different abilities than you would expect from Zelda herself.

If you don't play as Zelda herself then this isn't playable Zelda.  Hell, Nintendo could retcon one of the earlier games and claim that the Link you were playing was really Zelda assuming his form.  Would that be acceptable?  Would you consider that the same as playing as Zelda?  No, of course not but that's really what this is.

Though none of that would matter if Nintendo themselves didn't feel the need to specifically promote playable Zelda as a feature.

Want me to buy this game, Nintendo?  Give it normal responsive controls.  This is the first Zelda I have no intention of ever buying and I wonder if Nintendo is afraid of too many other Zelda fans having the same view so they're giving this the hard sell by trying to pass it off as a historic Zelda game that no fan can afford to miss.

For me it's entirely the controls.  I can live with trains and Nickelodeon visuals but I can't deal with crappy controls.  I never beat Phantom Hourglass but the time I spent playing it was a frustrating ordeal.  And the worst part was I could tell there was a good game hidden in there. :(  No point paying money to go through that again.

Phantom Hourglass controlled wonderfully.  The only time I ever struggled with the controls was when I needed to get Link to roll.  The entire game was built around the touch-screen controls.

I highly anticipate this game.

So... not only do you not play *as* Zelda, but this isn't the first game where you actually *do* get to play as Zelda.

Lame, Nintendo...

So you get to play as Zelda, BUT NOT REALLY.

Great, thanks a lot, Nintendo.

And yes, PH had a customizable boat. Remember? You found parts and traded them with friends and improved the boat's stats. PIMP YO' BOAT, YO.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

I had no issue with the controls in PH. Maybe the amount of multiplayer I did made me get used to them.

Also, I loved pimping out the boat. I never found all of the parts I wanted. :/

Anyone want to play PH multi and swap parts?

So once again, in order for Zelda to actually be useful to the main character she has to become something masculine, be it Shiek or to implant her soul in a statue.  I wonder if we're supposed to read something into that.   ;)

Seriously, it's nice to see the princess actually doing something for a change, especially after Twilight Princess falsely hinted she would have a major role there.
