Need Help Installing Netgear Wireless Router
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:49:24 PM »
Can someone tell me how to install a Netgear WGR614v.9 router? I had it hooked up before and it worked just fine, but then I unhooked it when I had problems with my internet to get it fixed, and now, I can't install it back. This is even more annoying since I just got another Wii.

I don't have that specific brand but I do have a netgear. Did the cable company hook it up before?

Can you post a pic of it. Kinda hard to visualize it. A back and front pic should suffice.

We definitely need more information.  What doesn't seem to be working?  What do you mean by install?  What happens when you turn it on?  What lights blink?  What lights are solid?  What is it connected to?  Have you checked and tested your modem?  Is it connected to the router properly?

To solve a problem like this we need actual information.  The best I can do at this point is just link you to this:
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WGR614v9_SM_26Oct07.pdf
Which is supposed to be a pdf of the support/setup manual for your particular router.

Well, before when I hooked my router up, I would hook the cables up, go online and configure the settings, and the internet would work on the pc and on my systems, but now it won't. and by install, i mean hooking it up. and yes, i have tested my modem, my new one and the old one that it is connected to. and it is connected to/hooked up to my pc. i can't really tell you what lights were solid/blinking since it isn't hooked up anmore, because when i hook it up correctly, i can't get internet on my pc, but i can my systems. so i can't go online an configure the settings,

Do you have a CD that came with the router. That should be able to change your settings.

So when you have the router powered up, with the modem connected to it, your video game consoles can connect to it, but your computer can't?

Which settings are you configuring when you "go online and configure the settings."  Do you mean the first time you set up the router, things like setting up encryption?  Have you tried directly connecting the computer directly to the router via ethernet cable, so you can adjust the settings without any wifi issues, if that's the problem?

I'm still not entirely clear on what the issue at hand is:  Is it that the router works with everything EXCEPT your computer?  And by "works," I mean everything else can connect via wifi to it, and that you haven't tested any of the ports on the back, correct?

Like I said, if I'm reading the problem you've said correctly, it's possible you could correctly and adequately configure the settings by just using an ethernet cable to direct connect the computer.  After you finish, if you're able to configure it like it should be, with the correct passwords, router name, and all that, you should be able to connect to it the same as before.

Sorry guys, but I will have to try and do this tomorrow and get back to you then. It is to late to screw around with hardware this time of day(or night).

Well, I tried a direct connect like thatguy said, but then it didn't work. So earlier today, I dug the CD out. It then told me to hook it up and it directed me to the settings to configure them. Weird, because the first time I hooked it up correctly, I didn't need the CD, I just needed to go to routerlogin.net.

I've been using WGR614's for many years now.  The little thing just works, provided you installed it properly.  It rocks.  Played some smooth online 4-player Brawl matches back when the game used to be cool.

Comcast, DOES NOT ROCK.  Any apparent router problems turn out to be caused by FREAKIN' Comcast.

I currently have Comcast, but I hate them.

A few years back, one of their service people came by one night to pick up my wife's cable box (she was moving out of her apartment, if I recall).  It was cold outside so my wife said, "Come inside the door for a minute while we get the box", so he did and stood there for a minute.  We went into the other room for literally a minute or two to find it, and he says, "I just have to run out to my truck to get something."  He leaves and never comes back.  While we thought this was weird, we just figured he had a call somewhere else or whatever.

A few hours go by, and we decide to go out and get a bite to eat.  I look around for my wallet and can't find it.  Yes, you guessed it - the Comcast guy grabbed my wallet, which I just so happened to place on a table by the door (I never did this, normally), and jetted.  I called all my credit card companies, and he had already used my American Express and Visa at a grocery store and gas station.  I had to close down all my cards and replace all of my ID because of this jackass.

What's even better is that Comcast had no idea who did it because their system allows techs to go in and delete the names of people assigned to appointments.  So when they looked up our appointment the person that did it was blank.  Besides, nobody a gave a crap anyways (not even the cops) because it was just a petty theft.  I filed a police report and got the credit cards to refund everything, and that was it.

Moral of the story: never let Comcast people inside your house.

Something prompted you to spread this holiday cheer.  I can't identify what.
