THQ Plans to Extend Their WWE Licensing Agreement

Despite a slight delay, THQ hopes to continue working with the wrestling giant.

A THQ representative told Gamasutra that despite facing a slight delay, THQ plans on extending their licensing agreement with World Wrestling Entertainment.

In an e-mail message, THQ VP of investor relations and corporate communications Julie MacMedan stated that, "We have the option to extend our video game relationship with the WWE through 2014 and we plan to do so".

THQ now has until December 31, 2009 to renew the licensing contract with the WWE and Jakks Pacific. When the contract is renewed, the agreement will be extended until December 31, 2014. It is unclear, however, if Jakks Pacific will be part of the deal.

I never got why Jakks Pacific was part of the deal. They didn't develop the games, they didn't publish the games, they didn't distribute them. They had nothing to do with the games other than having their logo on it.

Curious if another dev/pub would be better to handle the franchise.  I mean Yukes and THQ have done quite well lately with Smackdown and UFC IMO, but I always wonder if some other dev could blow them outta the water.

Anyways to answer your question about Jakks Pacific, they make all the WWE toys, and some random handful of controller to tv games.  THQ and WWE both no longer want Jakks Pacific in the deal.  I have no idea if THQ makes toys but they might have before hence the acronym Toy Headquarters (THQ).

I know about WWE's soon to be over relationship with Jakks (Mattel will get the WWE toys license on January 1, 2010). I have just never figured out what they have to do with the video games.

Its too bad Midway can't get it back, they currently have the title for making the best WWF/WWE game ever.

I didn't know they were still making wrestling games. The ones they created for the Nintendo 64 were okay but after that they got too realistic.
